This Day In ISU Women's Basketball

Folks:

I’m starting a new feature for the "Bengal Blog" that I hope will be enjoyed by all fans. This summer I spent a lot of time researching through box scores, newspaper stories and their ilk trying to come up with historically significant items in the history of Idaho State women’s basketball. I have about 200 of them now which I’ll spread out over the next few seasons.

I also want to give a ‘shout out’ to Jenna Galloway of ISU sports information who helped resolve some issues where the information conflicted or wasn’t accurate!

The vast majority of the notations naturally, take place between November and March but there are a few references to events that happened in September, April and May.

I will always post these items here in this thread.

I encourage fans who read this to provide their own memories of the listed events…always good to have more than one perspective.

Like I said this took a boatload of time and I hope you enjoy it.

In addition to the "Bengal Blog", I’ll be using items during a broadcast if the team plays on a night when something happened, on Twitter and on the ISU women’s basketball and the ISU women’s basketball alumni facebook pages.

And with that…we begin:

September 26, 2014 – It was the night when the greatest collection of ISU women’s basketball talent returned for a gala Alumni Game at Reed Gym in front of several hundred appreciative fans. Seven former 1,000 point scorers and seven former first team All-Big Sky Conference selections were among those who returned. The list of former players who came back and played included Sheryl Bitter, Cassie Bro, Jennifer Cannon, Chelsea Chambers, Laraine Cook, Kaylynn Fager, Michelle Grohs, Oana Iacovita, Kara Jenkins, Jess Jensen, Jessa Jeppesen, Abyee Maracigan, Camille Michaelson, Kayla Oakes, Chelsea Pickering, Lindsey Reed, Meg Salness, Ashley Toner, Allison Verona, Andrea Videbeck and Lindy Whitley.

Next items will be posted starting on November 12.

November 13, 2007Natalie Doma showed early that her senior season at ISU was going to be one for the record books. In the second game of the year Doma dropped in 25 points and had 15 rebounds in the Bengals 93-62 win over Montana Tech. It was the first of 16 games where she had at least 25 points!

PBP

November 15, 2013 – ISU’s Lindsey Reed cracked the 1,000 point barrier in her career in a loss at Illinois-Chicago. The Flames beat the Bengals 70-62. 72 free throws were attempted by both teams in the game! Reed finished the night with 19 points and her career by scoring 1,492 of them.

November 27, 2010 – It rarely happens but on this weekend it did for ISU’s Kaela Oakes. At the Texas El-Paso Thanksgiving Tournament, the Arizona native had a remarkable two days. On Friday she had 20 points in the 77-66 loss to the host school. The next day, with the Bengals needing a win to gain some measure of respect in the tournament, she went one better... well make that seven better. Oakes scored 27 points in the Bengals 62-55 win over High Point (N.C.) College. She was 8 of 13 from the floor, 2 of 4 from three point range, and was 9 of 10 from the line. She added seven rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. When the tournament was done she scored 47 points, an average of 23.5 per game and was named the tournament M.V.P. even though ISU finished third in it.
Oakes would turn out to be one of the finest players in program history.
