This Day in ISU Women's Basketball...

December 5, 2015 – In a home game at Reed Gym against Seattle University, ISU roared back from a 19 point deficit to beat the Red Hawks 83-67. ISU trailed 21-6 after the first quarter alone. Four players scored in double figures for the Bengals led by Apiphany Woods with 20. Anna Lee Policicchio had a notable game with 18 points, seven rebounds and eight blocked shots... two off the school record.

December 6, 2004 – It was an outstanding game by Molly Hays of ISU even though it wasn’t enough to get the win. Hays scored 25 points in the Bengals 60-52 loss to Boise State at the Bronco Gym. She shot 8 of 15 for the game, 8 of 10 from the line and had a three-pointer. She added eight rebounds and played all 40 minutes.

December 8, 2010 – For years ISU had played Utah in women’s basketball and had come up empty. 27 straight times as a matter of fact…but not on this night. At the Huntsman Center the Bengals Ash Vella scored 31 points as ISU knocked off the Utes’ 71-68 in overtime. Her cold blooded three from deep in the corner put ISU up to stay 70-68 with :53 seconds left. The Bengals then hung on for one of the biggest wins in program history. On the night Ash went 12 of 18 from the field, 2 of 3 from three point range and 5 of 5 from the line. She also had 11 rebounds, three assists and a steal. A tremendous night by a tremendous player.

December 10, 2005 Andrea Lightfoot set the school record for the most points in a game when she recorded 38 against Idaho in a 99-89 overtime win at Reed Gym. Lightfoot was 12 of 20 from the field with seven three pointers and seven free throws in 45 minutes of playing time. When all was said and done in her three year career, she’d wind up as the school leader in made three pointers with 182 and finish with 1,566 points. The game itself was remarkable because ISU trailed by 12 points with 2:52 to play and by seven points with :39 to go!

December 11, 2015 – Idaho State against Boise State is one of the longest rivalries in women’s basketball west of the Mississippi river. Brooke Blair picked a perfect time for a great game. With Blair leading the way with 27 points, the Bengals beat the Broncos at the Taco Bell Arena 80-77. Blair went 10 of 14 from the floor, 3 of 6 from beyond the arc and 4 of 4 at the free throw line. She also chipped in with five rebounds, four assists and a steal. She was one of four players who scored in double figures for the Bengals. For that performance Blair would be named Big Sky Player of the Week

December 13, 2014 – It was another nail biter against Utah Valley. Like so many other games between the two schools it came down to the finish. In this one, ISU overcame a 67-61 deficit in the final few minutes to win 68-67. Megan Hochstein hit two free throws with eight seconds left to give the Bengals the lead, than after the Wolverines Mariah Seals missed a layup at the buzzer, the Bengals had the win.

December 14, 2007 – It wasn’t much of a game and that’s understandable given it was against Lewis-Clark State but it was a good night anyway for Natalie Doma. The greatest player in ISU women’s history scored 29 points with 10 rebounds in 37 minutes as the Bengals won 74-58.

December 15, 2005 – Despite losing to Oregon 89-69 at Reed Gym it was an outstanding individual performance for ISU’s Chelsey Chambers. She scored 26 points on 10 of 16 shooting. She went 4 of 4 from the foul line, had a pair of three pointers, grabbed seven rebounds and added two blocks, one assist and one steal.

December 21, 1974 – Idaho State women’s basketball played their first ever game. They beat Ft. Lewis College 55-42. In the game ISU’s Rhonda Bulcher pulled down 21 rebounds, still one if the highest single game totals in program history. The Bengals took 93 shots in that game. Karen Tharp had 15 points, Laura Hanson added 11. ISU forced 31 turnovers while turning it over 34 times themselves! The team had co-head coaches the first season in Sandra Noakes and Kevin Gilbride. Yes, that’s the same Kevin Gilbride who’d go on to coach in the NFL for a number of years and win two Super Bowls as the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants. The Bengals finished their first season with a record of 8-7. New evidence came to light in the past few months showing that this was the date of the actual first game and not in the middle of January 1975 as previously thought.

December 22, 1997 – In a tournament game against St. John’s, ISU’s Shannon Copple set the school record when she tried 15 three point shots in the 74-65 loss. A little over two months later she would tie her record in a game at Eastern Washington. Janae Griffin would tie the record again in 2001.

December 28, 2000 – It was one of the key games during the championship season and the start of a 21 game winning streak. BYU came to Pocatello and played ISU at Holt Arena. At first it looked like the Bengals were going to run away with the game leading 31-17 at the half. But the Cougars roared back and took a lead in the final minutes. That’s when Chris Urbanski came to the rescue. She drilled a three ball from straight on at the top of the key with one second left to give ISU the dramatic 58-56 win. Ashley Toner had 16 points for Idaho State and Urbanski added 11. The Bengals would go 25-5 that season winning both the regular season and postseason titles in the Big Sky and losing to Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA’s.

PBP

December 29, 2009 – The Bengals would tie the school record when they recorded 22 steals in an 86-42 blowout win over Great Falls College at Reed Gym. The record was first set in 1990. Andrea Videbeck led the way with six thefts, Oana Iacovita added four. All together eight Bengals got steals that night.

PBP

December 30, 1993 – It was her biggest night as a Bengal. ISU’s senior, Julie Barner had an offensive explosion in the Bengals home win over Western Montana. Barner, who’d become an Honorable Mention Big Sky pick at the end of the year, poured in 27 points in the 70-57 victory.

PBP

December 31, 2003 – ISU’s Heidi Gifford celebrated New Year’s Eve in style dropping in 26 points as the Bengals beat up Cal State Fullerton 74-58 before only 100 fans in California. Gifford shot 13 of 19 for the night and scored all her points without making a three-pointer. She also had six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

January 1, 2015 – It was a Happy New Year for Bengal fans as the team celebrated with a 71-50 thumping of in state rival Idaho at Reed Gym. The contest marked the first Big Sky game for the Vandals since they rejoined the conference. It also marked the return of former ISU head coach Jon Newlee who left to take the Vandals position a few years earlier. Four Bengals scored in double figures led by Apiphany Woods with 19.

PBP

January 2, 1992 – ISU set the school record by recording 12 blocks in their 64-52 win over Montana State in Pocatello. Lori Heeter was credited with ten of the blocks with Leah Palmer getting the other two. Heeter also recorded the only triple-double in ISU women’s basketball history in the game. Her final stat line saw her score 14 points, grab 10 rebounds and block the aforementioned 10 shots.

PBP

January 3, 2008 – In a 20 point win over No. Colorado at Reed Gym, Natalie Doma scored 26 points with 12 rebounds in only 26 minutes as the Bengals won 86-66. She shot 9 of 13 for the game and 8 for 10 from the line.

PBP

January 4, 2005 – The Bengals blew out Utah Valley 86-46 in a game at Reed Gym but the final score really wasn’t the main focus of this one. Because of injuries, the Bengals had to ‘activate’ their team manager Dana Beechie in order to have enough practice players and to fill out the bench. Beechie got into the game and drained a three point shot in the win. She had played basketball at Bishop Kelly high school. Dana would appear in six games that year and later the program would name one of their season awards after her.

January 5, 2012 – It pointed the way to what would become a great season. ISU trailed Montana State in Bozeman by 16 points late in the first half but battled back to close the gap to only seven at halftime. Then in the second half the Bengals were again down 14 with fewer than ten minutes to go before making a fantastic push. They took a lead with under three to go then hung on and when Rachel Semansky saw her game winning layup roll across the rim ISU had a 59-58 win.

January 6, 2007 – Sometimes it’s easy to overlook greatness. Natalie Doma had so many terrific games sometimes they got lost but that doesn’t mean they weren’t noteworthy. In an 85-74 win over Utah Valley in Orum, Doma had 35 points AND 19 rebounds. She shot 13 of 24, 7 of 10 from the line and also tossed in a pair of three balls.
