Adams had already given an oral commitment to Portland State. “For all the wrong reasons,” he said, not going into detail. But his father already had the details on the Eagles.

“My dad told me, ‘You need to be with a winner.’”

Hey, Screamer. You probably will take the football game, but we already have 5 points in hand (1 soccer, 2 volleyball at Cheney and 2 more sure in volleyball at PSU). Football will give you 4, but I'm confident we'll take at least two basketball games. We'll take the cup for the third year. Sorry. Sort of.

Perhaps our secondary will improve by the time we play them this year.

I didn't think we'd win up there on that ugly ass turf last year, but we came home winners...

Is it just me? I could care less about a fabricated rivalry with Eastern Washington University foisted upon the alums of Portland State University. Few care about such a "rivalry" as it is artificially-contrived and not organically developed. We have no organic reason to be rivals, so I don't care about the "Dam Cup" or whatever name is used to stand for it.

An organically-conceived college football rivalry for Portland State would be someone like Sacramento State, but they have UC-Davis.

With regards to the Sacramento State comment...

Two urban universities that moved up at the same time. I'm probably more on board with that idea now that we should be a rivalry, but for quite some time we ruled them on the gridiron and they absolutely suck at men's basketball. Yes, they have been good some other sports, bu I've always felt that we'd done better since the move up, so why choose that school as a rivalry.

Boise State.

Now that would be a rivalry.

The rivalry doesn't really need to be in-conference.

That would be a great rivalry, but we are way late. Very organic and NW: Urban Oregon versus Urban Idaho. We could play for the Pokey Allen Trophy. Did Oregon leadership lose to Idaho leadership? Sure seems that way.

Other options include San Jose State. This one we can adapt to more quickly. Silicone Valley versus Silicone Forest.

Fresno State may prefer a rivalry with fellow Cal State school San Jose State. Such a rivalry for us with them would give us teeth that rip and tear.

Hawaii would work well as they have no natural pairing. Portland is a good name for a Pacific Mainland rival who happen to have the same school colors. Ahoy. Going to Hawaii each season would be great for Portlanders.

Transcend the big sky nonsense already. Get serious and stop settling for what's easy and mediocre. Get to work and stop settling for a policy of social retardation. Get the show on the road. Think big or go home.

The above symbol should be on our helmets, not that symbolic Nike creation.

If you mean by "organic" a common socio-economic base, then sure, Sacramento would fit. The Sacramento River allows them to claim "port" status, though it's not at all like Portland. Personally, I think EWU fits better as part of the Northwest vs California. And it's certainly the closest BSC school. And it's on the Columbia, or close enough, and the Columbia defines the Northwest if anything does. In fact, we and EWU are the only Northwest schools in the BSC; the rest are all Rockies and land-locked.
Having said that.....PSU is academically stronger (number of Phds granted etc.) than either EWU or Sac State. Hawaii would be a better fit in that regard. But that's not going to happen. Neither is Boise State. These "cup" rivalries are artificial; you can make what you want out of them. Maybe nothing will come out of the "Dam Cup", but as long as we've got it it doesn't hurt to win it - as we've done since it started. PSU's too new a school to have traditional rivalries. The only natural rival I can think of is UO. We play them as such regularly in volleyball, less often in basketball. Football.....is another story.

Eastern actually makes sense on some levels. Oregon vs. Washington. We recruit many of the same guys. Nigel has made it a point to recruit Washington hard. There's the Columbia river connection. I'll take any rivalry at this point.

That works if you ascribe an inferiority complex to the city of Portland. Is that what you are taking into account? Do you hold this to be the case? Portland should rival up with EWU because Portland isn't much of a city to begin with? Is Portland America's home for, say, underachievers? If this is the case, then what you say makes sense. I always wondered as to the true identity of Portland.

But in the case where Portland does not have an inferiority complex (or does not support the idea of one for itself), should they then not be college sports rivals with more or less a mirror image of themselves (San Jose, Honolulu, Fresno) to keep them at their best? Past Portland Mayor Vera Katz wanted Portland to be a great city with a great university. Don't you? The big sky schools major in mediocrity. We need to rise above to outclass them, and the sooner we do so the better we will escape distortion.

I find EWU laughably unacceptable as a sports rival in the scenario of Portland having a healthy self-image and believe the idea of PSU wasting potential rather than fulfilling it also unacceptable. Build it up -- don't tear it down. Even if Portland were America's "home for underachievers," Is underachieving an acceptable option for Portland's public university? Is that the image we seek to portray socially to the world? Are you aware that Portland is a city appearing consistently on world map?

UNACCEPTABLE-1.jpg

I could see San Jose State playing us at Jeld-Wen Field (with a very curious and nearly-full house watching the game live). I see only another 7,000 showing up for an EWU game. Portland State needs to climb up to realize its healthy self-image so as to cease retarding their social development. Money is the servant, not the idol.

Wait, am I the only one who's asking who the hell this guy even is? I don't even remember hearing his name.

And, besides, we have a good freshman QB anyways, so I don't see this as being a big deal.
