This is getting ridiculous.

We are scheduled for a home game against Montana State that day. Obviously the soccer folk don't care. :ohno:

And for what? To host the women's championship? Come on! :willybs:

Well, the Portland Thorns do outdraw PSU football, so there's that.

I don't have knowledge on the details on the agreement that PSU has with the lease, but I'm going to assume that there's a clause that would allow us to be bumped for something like this.

I'd love to see our venue packed for PSU football, but when you get down to it as an owner of a venue, you have to go with what draws in the largest revenue.

It sure makes it had to create interest in the football program when the product you're selling does not even know how many "home" games they will have in a given year. Who would buy season tickets not even knowing where exactly the games are going to be played? How can you generate excitement among the student body when they don't know where the games are played, or how they are going to get there? How can you create interest in the city when you don't even know if you are going to be playing in the city?

Its the conference opener for us. For most big time college football programs, that and homecoming are the two main draws of the year. Now thanks to this, we don't know where we are playing the game.

Is there a chance this can be moved to Friday night at Providence Park if Montana State agrees?

I'm going to bet on no. It takes time to clear the markings to the sport's satisfaction.

Frankly, this goose was cooked when Montana didn't sell out Hillsboro last year.

In doing some checking today on this, what I am hearing is the Timbers did give PSU a heads up of a possible conflict before they secured this "opportunity" and PSU said they were fine with it. :o

I guess file it under Keep Portland (or PSU in this case) Weird. :?

We have to face the facts. Until we can sell out a stadium, soccer will be the priority. Winning covers a multitude of sins. We either figure out how to do that or we continue to toil in obscurity...

I keep having this vision of a stadium that can be partitioned off into classrooms during the week and fits in the current layout of the campus. Take that for what it's worth... other than I'm headed back to a base argument of mine. Renting a stadium is an anchor on a program. Having your own means doing whatever you want with it. The truth is, even if PSU sustained 2015 levels of winning over the next two seasons, you're still bumping into Merritt Paulson in the end, and that's one, um, healthy ego.

Paulson, at tonight’s club/supporters charity outreach benefit, told the assembled crowd that he wants grass in Providence Park by 2020.

Understand that, until tonight, he was busier trying to sell US Soccer that the PP turf was good enough for men’s national team games. USSF hasn’t been having any of it. Paulson, who mentioned on Twitter that the $50 million expansion project will hit closer to $70 million, very likely wants national team games in the stadium now.

That's the team that has difficulty qualifying for the world stage, right? I'm sure playing on grass in Portland will definitely help their cause.

Excellent piece by Kerry Eggers of the Tribune regarding the Timbers/Vikings stadium issues.

I think he goes to great lengths not to paint either Golub or Cleary in a negative light. It is actually pretty fair to everyone, I think.

Golub's statement that "We enjoy working with them. "We like having them play (at Providence Park). Their program has a lot of history. This is not us having any agenda...." is utterly disingenuous.

The bottom line is found in the last paragraph where Clearly says, "We just want protected dates and a reasonable rate. Those are the only two things. We're not getting either of them, and this is the way it's going to be from now on." So, from what she says, it would seem our new permanent home will now be in Hillsboro.

This is bad news for the program, very bad.

Sounds like our last game at providence/jeld-wen/pge/civic/multnomah per barney.

The city of Portland (who actutally owns Providence Park) disappoints me once again!

I'm not reading much in to it. I'm thinking its just "Barnyism". If you stop to think about it, ever since the Timbers took over the stadium, every game we've played could have been the last game.

During this season, there has been a lot more talk about our stadium issues in the city. I for one, think it is good to talk about it. That is what starts the ball rolling towards doing something about it. But I highly doubt this is our last game in the stadium.
