Time for a new Def Color?

Time for a new D Coordinator? As long as we're pouring cocktails in here, how about EWU do something novel like say......LOSING before we unleash our brilliance. Unbelievable.

I don't like calling for someone's job, but it is time Beau takes over more control of the D. We will not win many games giving up 40+, let alone 50+. However it happens the D needs to get better.

Graham is the leader of the D, so he is the man in the spotlight.

I guess I'm the goose egg for actually being thrilled at this point....I'd suggest giving coach your suggestion cards so the X's and O's of the football program are fully vetted. Wouldn't want him to miss out on these great ideas in case his mind is blank.

Forced a couple of TO's too. How'd we do with those??

We actually scored off of the Gamboa fumble recovery. I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but McDonald forced both of those fumbles by getting his hat in the bread basket of the ball carrier. He's my defensive MVP so far this year.

We are only as strong as our weakest link. I'm on the side that thinks this is out of Graham's control. Think of 2011 when injuries decimated our strong offensive system. Just having players that are talented on defense won't give you results. You have to have capable players in every position, because you know that offensive coordinators will attack the weakest points. We have so many young kids. We haven't filled every position with talent since 2011 (our defense kept us in a lot of games). Athletes matter and we shouldn't call for the heads for events we can't control.

I know that everyone thinks and wants to believe that no matter the situation, we have the athletes to be the best team in the league on both sides of the ball. It seems like an optimistic message, but it leaves you ultimately pessimistic with the end result. I know that everyone wants to see us dominate games. However, you need to check into reality and realize that football is an up and down game. Sometimes you have the tools, sometimes you don't. Some coaches are better at finding the tools than others, but it's still a gamble with many factors. Winning the chipper and having so much success has made our fan base greedy.

This year, we don't have the tools to be a dominant defensive team. And you know what? That is OKAY. It's a game guys. It's a game that we love and want to see EWU win, but you have to remember that the players on that field are human and the real reason we are fans is not because we win the game. It's because we are Eastern Eagles at heart. If we can't put together a national championship team this year, so be it. At least we don't need to walk into our own stadium every game day and watch our team lose, like UND, UNC, and Weber.

I certainly am not calling for someone's head. I mean, we're 3-1 despite the fact it's been more of a survival than a dominance. All of 2010 was the same way, and it turned out pretty well.

But what's going in with the D is critical. The competence just doesn't seem to be there. 50+ points given up in two straight is very concerning. Perhaps we've just gotten hit with injuries and offenses firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately, even in game one and healthy, the D gave up over 500 to a pedestrian SHSU offense.

You look at 2011 and how many injuries the offense had, but they still put drives together and scored. I just think the offense will out score anyone held to 30 or under. Even an average defense gets us a boatload of wins. The D doesn't need to be overwhelming, just OK will suffice, but we're not getting that right now.

After rewatching a good bit of the game, scheme is less of a problem than execution. There were countless plays whee the defender was in position and just didn't make the tackle or got outrun to the edge. And this wasn't our young guys typically, it was often our big gun players.

Yes, they did. However, they didn't score over 30 points until their sixth game. At which point, you see steady improvement through adversity. A lesson which shows that EWU fans should show a little patience. Good things are on the way.

I just want to see us play an overall complete game. That's O, D, and Special Teams.

Each of you are fully able to vet the performance of our coaching staff or is this just your opinion based on the wind direction? One thing to have a differing opinion, another to use belittling tactics to shut down dissenting opinion on this board. Who isn't thrilled to be 3-1? Flagged for beating up the bunny rabbits.

God Bless Us, Everyone! Go Eags!

1) Not sure I'm thrilled, I am happy to be 3-1 as I expected to be 3-1. With SHSU losing all those superstars and having them at home I expected a win. Surely expected a win vs MW. Figured we be in the game vs UW(they are not very good) but lose and after seeing a terrible Georgia State team ahead of them 14-0 at half yesterday we should have won that game. MSU losing their QB and not knowing who would surface to take the reins from their all-star QB I thought we'd win this game in a tight match(not quite that tight due to a new QB star has arrived in the BSC). I'm happy...thrilled could have been attained by beating a poor UW team.
2) Thrilled at 3-1 could have happened if our "D" excited me a bit more in the four games. I really do believe they made some outstanding plays yesterday against a great offense and this gives me a feeling we are on the right path. If we just a little better each game and still win...by playoff time we will be playing defense like we should.

For comparison's sake, we've given up exactly as many points in the last two games as NDSU's D has given up in the last 12 games, going back to Oct 26, 2013. NDSU gave up 169 points in 15 games in 2013, we've given up 155 points in just 4 games this year. :ohno:

We'll find out a lot about where the defense is at next week. UC Davis is averaging just a hair over 300 yards per outing, and that number is probably as indicative as it can get. They had one miserable offensive outing against Stanford mitigated by a big outing against a DIII.

Fort Lewis gave up 459 to UC Davis; it would be pretty embarrassing if we gave up more. Fortuhately, UC Davis also doesn't do much defensively.

If our team is a legit Big Sky championship threat and top 5 team, this should be a walkover. If it isn't, we'll know these vulnerabilities are a major problem.

LDopaPDX, I am sure you are aware of approximately 3 Freshmen are playing the DL. I am not trying to make excuses for any of them, I am sure Coach is aware of what is going on. #92, Nick Forestal, #93 Marcus Saugen, and #96 Pasefea, 1st name slips my mind. I have seen the team, we have some damn great Players on our team, I bet any Team will be glad to get any of them from us. I know we have been kind of unpredictable at times on Defense, however, we are able to get the victory. I am sure we will get better, and let us give them credit for the "GUTS" they showed on Saturday, same for Montana State. Vic Wallace

clawman,
I agree with everything you have written. Both teams played the "BUTTS" off. MSU will have a damn good QB, That young man (QB) really have what it takes to become one of the best. You noticed all the calls against us, reminded me when we were playing Montana. Big Sky have to convince me they are capable of calling those games. I am not blaming all of them, some of them need to go back to school. I shouldn't be criticizing them, because I don't want no part of Officiating process. One great ting I noticed, "Vernon didn't have any Leg Cramps in this game. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:    I started getting concerned during the game, he was about to have the cramps, I was so happy. I don't think he would have been able to continue in that game, had he gotten any leg cramps. See you tomorrow at the "Impulse" Northern Quest 5:30p.m. Vic Wallace
