Time for Changes

I don't think it's all about wins and losses regarding the Administration keeping Sperbeck and, for that matter, Katz. I think one of the big reasons these two coaches are getting the benefit of the doubt is because they've successfully kept the Academic Progress Rates and Graduation Success Rates up and thus, Sac State out of being embarrassed again in the media for low academic scores by its student-athletes, which occurred before they got hired. Since Sac State isn't a sports mecca and a winning tradition has never been established, there isn't alumni/community pressure to field top tier teams, therefore, the Admin can live with .500 teams; that's what I think.
Good points. My theory on the Katz extension is Wanless just doesn't want to bother finding a new coach until the event center is up. If all stays on schedule, Katz gets 2 seasons in the new digs as a kick back/reward for getting the off the court issues together (regardless of the high roster turnover and poor on the court product) and maybe another extension if he can utilize the new facilities to bring in better recruits and get this program competitive with the top of the BSC.

I wouldn't say the past two year's Katz's programs are a poor on the court product. You obviously were not around during the disastrous Abatemarco and Newman years. THAT was a poor on the court product!

Be that as it may, I thought I remember that Sperbeck has two more years or something like that. I was talking to with some of the parents yesterday and they said that he has a couple of more years. So there better be changes to the defensive staff!

The truth is that its gonna be a miracle for Sperbeck to get let go. There is no way the university is going to eat his contract...perhaps an even bigger issue is that he brings in A TON of good 'ole boy money from the local boosters, which is why he is the highest paid coach in the Sky.

Yup.

Yup. I was spoiled with the exciting Jenkins years. Katz' teams have always had a scoring problem, that wasn't always the case with Jenkins' teams.

If true then we are stuck with him until then. Only published info on his contract found on the Google is dated and refers to his extension through '12.

So he is either stringing together some 1 year extensions or a longer extension was previously issued but never made public. I wish we had more exact details.

Jenkins only had one team that made it to .500 too. In 8 years. All the others were below .500. Jenkins' teams always gave up more points than they scored. Personally, not a fan of teams that don't play defense. And his teams didn't play defense. The bottom line for hoops, we need the new Events Center to start making a difference. Period.

Agreed, but Jenkins was at least able to get this team into the BSC Tourney, win in the BSC Tourney, but most importantly pack the Nest on a regular basis that ultimately resulted in the passed referendum that will hopefully get us an events center. Students actually gave a shit for a change, it was a magical time. Keeping my fingers crossed on the SEC, I won’t breathe easy until a shovel hits the ground. :|

I believe we are talking about the football coach, not the basketball coach. Those comments should be done on Hoops section. Anyway, I sent my note to Dr. Wanless, and I urge you to do the same if you sincerely want a change. One or 2 emails, and the AD may think, meh, big deal. 20 to 30 emails, he probably takes notice.

Anyway, I indicated that we need a new HC, but if contract restraints exist, we should dump the DC.

I'm sending mine shortly. Trying to put together something that doesn't look like a knee-jerk reaction to years of frustration. Also trying to put a spin on it that Sperbeck is not a bad guy, but seems to be a little out of his league in finding, hiring/keeping quality assistant coaches and innovation in the program. Maybe move him into administration like they did with the former baseball coach. It looks like he's the second highest paid coach in the BSC, so I would expect more from the program than we're currently getting. If there's any discontent amongst the assistant coaches (being all on the same page), or if schemes are too complicated, or if the players are not all in, changes must be made.

Chi City,

I have had to make several presentations to CEO level people, so here is the general format I used:

A. General greeting

B. Appeal to replace the HC:
1. Hiring Sperbeck was the right decision, he turned program around.
2. I do not think the program can advance under HC. Program would be attractive to successful FCS and D2 coaches.
3. Example of why I believe the players are not playing for the coach.
4. Understand that contract issues may exist, if that is case clear examples that defense was the problem this year.

C. Final appeal to make a change based on facts.

Salutation

Thanks, HH. That's pretty much where I was heading. I appreciate anything that can make a reasonable statement that is not based just on feelings alone. Thanks

Sent mine in. Didn’t go into specifics but kept it general as far not being happy with the direction things are headed and that I won’t be sending in any more contributions or purchasing season tickets until things change for the better.

I tried to tell you two weeks ago. It was just a matter of whether it was going to be 3, 4 or 5 years and the timing of the announcement. Due to the poor finish you can expect to see a three year extension. If they would have beaten Davis it would have been a five year deal and it would have been announced today. If Wanless sticks to his MO it will be announced during the holidays when the campus is virtually shut down and the media has bigger and better things to be focused on. Sperbeck's salary has gone up an average of $1000 a month for the last 7 years as a reward for producing a below-average product and you guys think Wanless is going to fire him for losing one less game than his best season ever?
If you really want to have an impact on the outcome you'll need a much stronger approach than a handful of guys on this site sending emails to Wanless. The Sacramento Bee offered the Sac State fans a voice this morning in the form of a poll. Try getting a couple thousand people to say Sperbeck should be gone and maybe you'll grab some real interest from someone higher up the food chain than Wanless.

I agree but unless someone wants to take a more coordinated approach there isn’t much else to do. As an individual, choosing not to spend my money on the program and sending in emails is about the only real sway one has. If enough people feel the same way and withhold funds then the impact is greater. If there were any major boosters that did the same thing then the impact is even more meaningful.

Interesting, unfortunately the site requires your personal to make a pledge amount for change. If this site had more background as to who was heading up this effort, and what the goal beyond having these people replaced is then I think more people would be inclined to put their info in.

The truth will come out shortly. The form was built as a way to vent some frustration only.

Our average attendance tanked this year, besides the UCFE game, we should be down 30% or more. That should be a red flag.

Weber State coach will not return, Jody Sears.
