time for this staff to go

If Burton does walk after this year, once again we are going to battle Montana for finding a football coach.

Last time we went head to head with the Griz in looking for a head football coach, we had to settle for Burton when our #1 choice, Pflugrad, went there instead.

I hope that June Jones has to go to Missoula to interview for the Montana job. Maybe the cold weather will be enough to turn him off.

How about giving Pflugrad a chance at PSU?

Now time will tell if Nigel Burton has any class and offers his resignation. Or if he is so egocentric and insists on continuing to remain as head coach. He needs to leave.

Right or wrong, the question is that, if the word is out there that our football program is on its last legs, what coach would want to come here if Burton does leave. I'm hearing some concern from around the conference about whether or not we will have football next year or the year after. If the prospective coaches are hearing that too (like I said, right or wrong), what type of coach would want to come here for only a year or two.

With the Timbers altering (or potentially altering) two to three games this last season, I wonder what the future holds for PSU at Providence Park. The first game was moved to Hillsboro for a conflict with a regular season game. The last game was moved to Friday because of a potential playoff game conflict for the Timbers, and the second to last game was iffy for the same reason but wasn't moved. The Timbers will reserve all potential playoff dates going forward so there will be more problems. The lack of leadership and support from the University and from within the Athletic department administration could be the final blow.

Portland State University announced Wednesday that Head Football Coach Nigel Burton's contract is being terminated. During Burton's five years at PSU, the Vikings posted 21 wins to 36 losses, including a 3-9 record this season.

"We appreciate what Coach Burton has done for the program," said Interim Athletic Director Valerie Cleary, "but we believe new leadership gives our talented players a chance to make a fresh start."

Cleary and President Wim Wiewel informed Burton of the decision on Wednesday morning. Burton was hired to replace Jerry Glanville in 2009. Prior to coming to PSU, Burton was a defensive coordinator at University of Nevada.

"Coach Burton had a good second year, and he was very successful at recruiting players from Oregon and Washington, and has two former players now playing in the NFL," Cleary said. "We have great student-athletes and staff. They deserve the chance to be successful."

PSU Vikings Offensive Coordinator Bruce Barnum has been named the interim head coach. A native of Vancouver, Barnum has been the OC for the past five seasons.

Burton has one year left on a three-and-a-half year contract. PSU will pay him the remainder of his contract at $187,500. Under the terms of his contract, if Burton is hired elsewhere next year, he will receive less than that amount and would be paid the difference between his contract payout and a new salary.

"I want to thank our alumni and fans and remind them that it's an exciting time for all of PSU Athletics," Wiewel said. "We'll soon be hiring a new athletic director who will decide on a permanent head coach and start construction on our new Viking Pavilion Athletic and educational building."

Burton was a good man. It is a loss to lose a man of character like that. However, it is time for a coach with the PROVEN coaching skills to step in. Our problem is always going to be our compensation compared to other schools. I think our best bet is another young coach who has shown he can take a team at a lower level to a championship level. Of course some of the names floated around sound great but it is not realistic to think a big name will come here for what we can pay. Read the story of the current coach at Miss.State. We need a young version of him working his way up the coaching ranks.

In any case Happy Thanksgiving!

Pleasantly surprised by this news. I didn't think the school would want to pay off his contract, so I'm glad that they aren't afraid to pull the trigger. I also have no problem with an interim AD calling the shots.

To be honest, I didn't think that we'd pull the trigger on this seeing as football needs to be self sustaining, and setting us back 187k doesn't help.

Ether a booster(s) stepped up or the PSU Administration just tossed PSU football an anvil.

Either they know about Burton wanting to take another job or someone else funded this move, or couldn't this be a pretty risky move? Couldn't Burton just take the year off, be with his family, and take $187,000 in paychecks that he is owed. $187,000 that the football program doesn't have if it wants to be self-sustaining.

The 187K buyout isn't that much if you can increase seasonticket by 900 over last year at $200 a pop. I am surprised and encouraged that the Administration cares enough about the program to not let it dangle through a lame duck year. Now if the new AD and coaching hires happen fast enough to not lose a recrutiing year things could definitely be looking up.

I see this as a positive sign that the administration is committed to keeping football. Burton is a young man, he will find another job. I believe he would be an asset to a program in recruiting, so this won't cost the program the total of his salary.

Looks like Burton is headed to the Pac-12 Network as a studio analyst. I'm assuming that a non-coaching analyst gig is the same as taking a year off?
