Time to move one, The bye week

Alright you silly bickering numbskulls, its time to move ahead and put this loss behind us, this isnt egriz, we dont quit on our team after a loss, so lets try concentrating on what this team needs to work on over the bye before we welcome our oldest rivals into town.

Things I think we need to work on.

1. First and foremost, is commiting less penalties, I dont know how many first downs we gave to Eastern becuase of penalties, and how many holding calls put us in 1st,2nd and 3rd and long situations. We need to fix this, in our 3 conf games, we have commited way too many penalties.

2. Our pass defense was horrid against Eastern, lack of containing let BLM get out of the pocket and receive just enough time to find his receivers, and the result was a torching.

3. I know we are first in the conf at take aways, but HANG ON TO THE FOOTBALL WHEN IT FREAKIN COUNTS

What else does this team need to focus on?

I need some insight from Double Nickel on this containment problem. It isn't just this year, but I remember last year we also had a problem with containing the QB. What is the solution, a spy? Who's responsibility is it, the outside linebacker, defensive end?

Also did everyone notice how aggressive EWU defense was to finish out the game? I wish we had of played defense like that against UW instead of the passive defense we tried.

Our contain varies with the package and call. The goal is to set up a wall according to where you are positioned/blitzing. The problem is when players decide to do their own thing at the sake of their responsibility. If you make a move out of your wall of contain i.e. making an inside move when you have contain, then you better make the play or else the QB is scrambling for yards or buying time to make a big play downfield. When you play man defense the secondary can only cover for so long. Coach Clune stressed the wall when he was here, I don't know why this hasn't been addressed over the past couple years. A QB spy is nice if the QB is racking a whole lot of yards rushing, we haven't played anybody except Keeton that has warranted a QB spy.

Most of the time its the defensive end who is supposed to force the runner (RB,FB,QB etc) back up the middle so they cant get the outside, we have had a serious lack of containment the last few years.

Our pass defense is gonna have to step it up big time next week, ISU does nothing but pass, and if we cant stop it, then ISU will torch our defense.

An average QB will beat you if you give him enough time. We have made some QBs look great because we are not putting any pressure on them. Something needs to change. :coffee:

How many times did Eastern bring the blitz? It seemed like it was almost every single play, after watching our games vs Sac, UNC and EWU we hardly ever blitz and put pressure on the QB.

Come on guys get a little creative.

Per Webster's dictionary

Weber State Offensive and Defensive Coordinators:

"deer in the headlights" or "shot in the dark" playcalling.

Although it has been mostly solid throughout the season, I'd still like to see the offensive line play with more of a chip on its shoulder. Mike Hoke was running for his life during far too many drop-backs against EWU. Thank god he is very careful with the football or that game could have been much uglier. With the same amount of pressure Hoke was under on Saturday, Higgins probably would have thrown 3 or 4 interceptions.
I don't think we've seen the best out of our o-line yet...

4th and inches, and we go right....whew. Hoke looks hurt, we'll see what the dr./trainers say today. he took a beating in that game, O line was porous at best.

ISU game will be a chance to get back on track. Step up the D, GET a pass rush, and make things happen.
