TJ NFL Draft Thread

INDIANAPOLIS – How did a running back who is projected to be a third-round pick in April’s NFL draft end up at Eastern Washington University?
“I got overlooked by a lot of schools and Eastern was the only school that offered me a full ride (scholarship),” Taiwan Jones said today during his interview session in the media room at the NFL scouting combine.
So the versatile back from Antioch, Calif., was introduced to life in Cheney, Wash., where he ended up producing 4,766 all-purpose yards in two seasons – after spending his first season as a cornerback.
To say that Jones is enjoying his combine experience doesn’t begin to describe just how fun he is having.
“It’s definitely a dream come true, because I always felt like I was a big secret to everybody,” he said.
His attitude is helping Jones not only endure but embrace the tedious process of sitting through one meeting after another where representatives from NFL teams ask variations of the same questions.
“It’s just exciting, even if they are asking me the same questions over and over,” he said through a large smile. “At least they’re asking.”

Please please please let the Seahawks draft TJ, even if we don't have a 3rd round pick.

I was thinkin the exact same thing SE. Local kid for them, they've probably seen more of him also.

Once the Hawks shore up the O-line and get some more consistency there, could you imagine the Lynch-TJ-Forsett combo? Savage.

Haven't found any numbers yet, but you can see him waiting on deck (RB 21) as Mark Ingram reps on bench.

Would love to see TJ end up in Seattle....right now I'm just hoping he can perform well on his pro day and go in an early round.

To my knowledge the fastest 40 run at the combine was a 4.34, TJ, based on what I heard, can run faster than that. I would expect to see him run low 4.3 at his Pro Day if not high 4.2.

If he runs anything under 4.4 this soon after breaking a bone in his foot I'd be happy. I'd think he'll be around 4.32-4.39

I love Taiwan as much as any one. But there is no way that on his best day that he is running a 4.2
No doubt. Let's not get carried away, folks.

So far at the Combine (corners are running right now), Chimdi Chekwa, a corner from Ohio St. ran a 4.33. Da’Rel Scott, a running back from Maryland ran a 4.34 to top all non corners. Chris Culliver a corner from South Carolina ran a 4.36. WRs Ricardo Lockette and Edmund Gates both ran 4.37 40s to round out the top five so far this year.

:agree:

Probably more 4.3-4.4 range....

but.....

Aside from his raw speed, his quick feet, allusiveness and balance are a huge asset and immeasurable until he gets on the field against competition.
Another obvious point is the speed in the NFL. Bigger faster stronger will be the theme from what he has experienced in his past.

I don't think he will run sub 4.3, but I think he will run sub 4.4 at his pro day, but you never know with his foot. It has been rumored on this board and I've heard from others that he has run a sub 4.3 a couple times...ya never know.

If that's the case, my guess is they were hand timed. Electronic times are initiated by lifting the hand from a switch mat and stopped by the torso passing through an infrared beam. Hand timers initiate timing on first movement of the player from a 3-point stance and stopped when the timer "thinks" they passed the finish line. Practically speaking, electronic timing produces the best measurement of 40-yd dash speed and hand timing produces faster times.

Not many folks/schools have electronic timing devices...

It was my understanding that Taiwan was doing bench reps. Does anyone know how many he did?

I'm still trying to find that out myself, they haven't updated his NFL combine profile page (with anything). I did find this though... hopefully he repped more than 6. :?

I've held my tongue on this for a while, but I think Taiwan got really bad advice from whoever his agent was. There were just too many things he needed to work on before being an impact player at the pro level. But most importantly, he needed to prove he could stay healthy... if a 220-lb. linebacker can take him out at this level, what's a 250-lb. linebacker who runs faster and hits harder going to do to him in the NFL?

I think Brandon Kaufman is more draft-ready as a player than Taiwan. All this talk about being a 3rd-round pick seemed ridiculously premature for a guy who's only project to get a few touches a game.

I hope he proves me wrong... but the indicators are starting to show his stock drifting back down to reality.
