Taiwan Jones Medical Update

Eastern Washington running back Taiwan Jones ran today doing striders and his quick start. The two-time All-American is expected to run his first 40 next week and weighs about 197 right now.
His right elbow deformation is that he can't straighten his arm completely.
Jones informed JB Scouting tonight that he is not sure if he will be able to do everything on April 1 so he could push the date back so that he can perform a complete workout for NFL teams.
He will go back to Indianapolis for medical re-checks on April 8th.
More to come as we get it.
By Craig Haley, FCS Executive Director
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - It's easy to forget that Taiwan Jones made 15 tackles in a game as a freshman cornerback at Eastern Washington.
He just seems like he was born to be a running back, his running style so effortless and twists and turns so elusive.
The problem with Jones - whichever side of the ball he's been on - is staying healthy. He battled an assortment of injuries in his three seasons of action at EWU, including this past season when the Eagles won the FCS championship and he didn't play in the national semifinals and championship game because of a broken left foot.
The NFL Advisory Board gave him a third-round grade after his junior season, prompting him to declare for next month's draft. He should do well if he stays healthy.
The left foot has not healed as quickly as he hoped, so he couldn't do most of the drills at the NFL Combine and his pro day has been pushed back several times. The private workout is now set for April 14 at Los Medanos College in Pittsburgh, Calif.
Jones, who is 6 feet, 197 pounds, is susceptible to hard hits because of an upright running style.
There's no questioning his productivity, though. After switching from offense to defense, he rushed for nearly 3,000 yards on over 7.7 yards per carry the last two seasons. He also caught 64 passes during that time and returned kickoffs.
In Five-a-Side - In the Huddle's monthly feature of "five questions, five answers" with an influential person in the FCS - Jones discusses his NFL Draft aspirations.
Let's kick off:
TSN: Obviously, you're coming off having the broken left foot. What is the status of the injury?
TJ: I have some great trainers and the physical therapist has done a good job of being very cautious about it because they know how anxious I am to get going. The fact that I'm able to run and I've been able to do some cuts (recently), I'm very confident that I will be fine on April 14. I can't full wait to go full (speed), though.
TSN: At the NFL Combine, you were limited with what you could do physically. But did you still come away feeling like you impressed teams?
TJ: I wasn't able to do much. The only thing I did was my bench press and I did OK in that. I actually had a lot of pride in it because when I first started training I only did six reps and I was able to come away with 13 at the Combine. I couldn't compete in any of the other drills, but I definitely felt like I impressed some teams during the interviews. That was my main focus since that was the only thing I could really do was meet with teams. I felt like I had a lot of meetings.
TSN: Can you break down your style of play that you feel will work best in the NFL?
TJ: Just my elusiveness. At first I have a lot of speed, but I'm also able to run between the tackles when needed. I have great breakaway speed. I feel like my vision, with my elusiveness, that that will definitely help me at the next level.
TSN: What parts of your game do you want to improve the most?
TJ: I definitely want to become a better student of the game and I practice my pass protection more because at the level I played in I really only had to cut people. Coming to the next level, I know I need to block up high, and that's definitely something that I'm going to work on.
TSN: You're going from being a star most of your life to being one of a number of players in a large pool who are trying to make an NFL roster. How does that affect your approach and confidence level?
TJ: I've always felt that I've been under the radar my whole life, I felt like that was a big secret. I still feel like not many people know about me. I think my approach is I'm just hungry. I'm just hungry to make a name for myself. It's a dream come true, man. Making it is only the first step. I just can't wait to make a team and be productive on that team.
NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock chatted with NFL.com users on Friday, as anticipation for the draft continues to build. One of the great things about a Mayock chat is that you usually discover a prospect that you likely have never heard of.
And Mayock failed to disappoint. When asked about a potential “little man” in this year’s draft, Mayock sang the praises of Eastern Washington RB Taiwan Jones. The junior was unable to perform at the combine because of a foot injury, and scouts are clamoring to get a glimpse of the kid. As is Mayock.
“He’s 194 pounds and I think he’s going to run 4.35 or better,” Mayock said. “He’s a home-run hitter who can impact the return game and I think that you try to get him another 10 touches per game as a change-of-pace back.”
Jones is scheduled to work out April 14 at Los Medanos Junior College in Antioch, Calif., with 26 teams scheduled to attend.

Evan Silva said:Eastern Washington running back Taiwan Jones will hold an individual Pro Day workout on April 14, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT.
Jones had to push back his workout due to foot surgery.
The Pro Day will be held at Los Medanos Junior College in California. 26 teams will be represented, which shows the demand for Jones. He’s a small-school running back working out at a JUCO.
A possible second- to third-round pick, Jones is “rising up draft boards,” according to the source. Jones’ training coach recently informed Yahoo! Sports that the explosive tailback is running ten-yard splits in the 1.4-second range, which would easily be the best ten-yard time in the draft. Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa paced the field at the Combine with a 1.52 ten-yard split.
Jones’ 7.90 career yards-per-carry average is also by far tops among running backs likely to be drafted in April. He’s drawn comparisons to Brian Westbrook and Jamaal Charles for his home-run speed and versatility.
The main concern for Jones is his durability.
I take it you didn't bother to click the link a couple posts up by vetteman. :lol:FrontFive4Life said:http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/sh...Jones-works-on-his-40-yard-dash?urn=nfl-wp598
Nice write up and video of Taiwan putting in work in LA!
JOURNAL 4– APRIL 5, 2011
Dear Journal,
So far I have been training. We have been working on my 40 starts a lot. I have just been timed in the first 10 yards. I haven’t been timed in a full 40 yet. They have been introducing the 3-cone and l-drill. The more I have done them I have become more comfortable.
As far as visits the only team I have visited with is Philadelphia. I met with the running back coach. He taught me their offense to see how I learn and all of that. We met at my high school in my hometown.
I have Miami and Arizona scheduled for visits. There is talk about Carolina and Kansas City setting up visits. The first one is April 18th and the other is April 19th.
I have a dinner with a few teams but I’m not sure which teams they are right now. Some are before and others are after my pro day.
My pro day is April 14th. I will be able to do everything. I get more comfortable with the drills the more I do them. I have a lot of high expectations as far as some of the numbers. I feel like the main thing I will focus on is my 40 and vertical. I have been running a lot of low 1.4s in the 10-yard. I only did the vertical once but I did 40 inches. I am weighing around 200 right now. I’m hoping I will weigh in at least 202. I think 202 will be a good weight for me. Travelle wants me at 205 but we will see.
Right now I believe 27 teams are committed to coming and hoping to get the other five to commit as well.
Talk to you after my private workout!
Taiwan Jones
