Today is the Application Deadline

I wonder if we'll see a list of the candidates being interviewed? I would hope that a decision to be made prior to the conclusion of the Final Four (April 7th.)

I hear Jay John from Oregon State is one of the top guys.

He is not listed as being on the OSU staff.

Because he got the ax on Jan. 20th for going 0-18 in Pac-10 play! THIS JUST IN! Ben Braun (CAL) got fired today! Hurry up Ben! Turn in your application before COB!

And why would we want either of them if both got the heave-ho at PAC-10 schools. You think they are magically going to be able to recruit to Hornet gym? If they couldn't win with PAC-10 resources, fuggetaboutit.

I disagree. In the Pac-10, there is way more pressure to perform than here. Im mean look, Braun was like 220-170 or something like that. He had a winning record overall. I'd take that record for a 12 year stretch.

There is no chance that a Pac 10 coach would come to Sac State. It would be career suicide to make a backwards move like that. They will either wait for another big time job, a true mid major, or an assistant at a high profile school. We need to find a diamond in the rough who will use this school as a stepping stone not a guy who would be stepping down

Not so fast, JMB. Folk like Mike Price have taken a "step backward" (albeit forced by their own behavior) and come out better for it. Someone COULD "step back" to Sac and do well.

Of course, that opens the door for us being a "stepping stone." Do we really want that?

As far as the "diamond in the rough" theory goes, we could take a peek at Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner Pete Saco, though he hasn't coached hoops in years. He was a VERY good coach at Lodi High, and had his teams in the playoffs many times.

You're joking right?

Price went from being a Pac-10 coach to an SEC job to doing ok (9-15 the last 2 years) in Conference USA. I don't see how he is better for it. I just think with the challenges that a coach will face at Sac State it is better to bring in someone who is not accustomed to all of the advantages that come along with the high profile jobs. However, until Sac State starts to pay reasonable money no high stature coach will make a choice to come here.

Kadeezy: Which part? The idea that a guy can leave a high-profile coaching job and rehab his image at a lesser program, or the idea of hiring a former high school coach who hasn't coached in years?

One could say that Jim Harrick blew it at UCLA, but used a stint at Rhode Island to get himself the job at UGA. One could also say that Dick Vermiel was semi-successful after a long hiatus after his "retirement" from the Eagles. Of course, anti-examples would include Bill Walsh at Stanford and Joe Gibbs with the Redskins (though I would put an asterisk by Gibbs' name as things were turning around when he inexplicably ran back to NASCAR).

In the case of Saco, given his outstanding record as a coach, perhaps SHA got screwed or knew someone who got screwed by one of Saco's decisions as commissioner. Were you close to Tom Verner at Stockton-Franklin? (Ouch! That's a little close to ME, as Verner was DC on my Lodi Rams Pop Warner team.) Or do you have an issue with the fact that Saco coached GIRLS hoops at Lodi?

LOL.

Incidentally, I'm just throwing a name out there. I'm convinced that Katz is the right way to go, particularly if we go for the package deal I mentioned earlier by replacing Muscatell with Gina Johnson.
