Top BSC Teams?

Preseason is about up and BSC games are right around the corner. We should have a fairly good idea of each teams potential. What are everyone's picks at this juncture?

I'm still picking Montana and Weber to be right at the top of things when the dust settles. However, there are some other teams who have had good wins that would raise a few eyebrows. I'm going to dig in to all of the preseason records over the weekend and post a 1 through 12 next week. :coffee:

According to Ken Pomeroys algorithm, this is how the Big Sky finishes:

Weber 14-4
Montana 12-6
Eastern Washington 12-6
Sac State 11-7
Idaho 10-8
Montana State 9-9
Portland State 8-10
North Dakota 7-11
Northern Arizona 7-11
Southern Utah 7-11
Northern Colorado 6-12
Idaho State 5-13

His computer says that their is a slight chance we run the table. I hope we can play like we did on Tuesday most nights, if we do, good night it will be over. Montana might be the one team that is more Jeckyl & Hyde than us. They have put together some great games and also came out flat.

The old standard of success (20 win season) is passé for Weber State. The new measurement of a good season should be 25! Why? (1)Because of Weber's habit of under-scheduling; (2) because of more games being played in a season than in earlier years; (3) because of the expanded number of games played against a sub-par Big Sky Conference; and (4) because more games played in the "BS" tournament. Maybe the peanut will have to schedule even more weak teams in pre-conference if he changes his objective to 25 wins...

In the past 12 days BSC teams have played 9 games against Major Conference teams. None of them played by Weber State by the way! BSC has lost all 9 games by an average of 34 points. The closest game was North Dakota vs Kansas State (15 points), and the largest loss margin was SUU vs St. Mary's (52 points).

Are we really 30 points worse as a low mid-major conference versus major conferences. Maybe there needs to be a FCS of basketball. Of course i am joking, because of the NCAA tournament. But wouldn't it make for better entertainment and fan support for mid-major teams if they competed in their own tournament. How about combining the NIT/CIT/CBI tournaments into one FBS type tournament?

Just food for thought... It is hard to admit that Weber basketball just cannot compete with the Major conference teams but it is a reality! :yikes:

After looking at everyone's wins and losses, I think I'm ready to dive in here. First off, I don't think that the BSC is as bad as some are making it out to be. There have been some quality wins and some very competitive losses to good teams. There are just a couple of teams weighting us down. In my ranking I've factored in how some teams, in past seasons, have progressed through the league games. Some teams have a history of imploding, while others seem to get better as they go. Anyway, here is how I have it.

WSU
UM
Sac
UI
EWU
UND
NAU
UNCO
SUU
MSU
ISU
PSU

We lost to Stanford by 10 at Stanford on Dec 21st....game was tied with 5 mins left...

Some might point to SUUs loss at St Marys as a really bad loss. Not me. I've been to a couple of games in that gym, with WCC refs, and I can tell you that SUU may have won that game if played at their place, with neutral refs. It sure would have been a much closer game. St Marys will not leave their gym for a preseason game. Why should they, they have the money to purchase 10 wins per season. They think they are a PACx team.

Seriously olds....are you on meds??...SUU has exactly 2 wins at home: they beat mighty LaVerne and the all powerful Bristol, but they have lost to CSU Fullerton by 16 at home but you think they could beat the number 5 Mid Major team in the nation if they could get them at Cedar City....St Marys has lost exactly one (1) game this year and that was by 4 to Cal at Cal....the same Cal team that just took the number 5 nationally U of Virginia to overtime on Virginia's home court and lost by 1.....I'm seriously worried about your state of mental acuity...in other words....GET REAL OLDS!!!! SUU will be at the bottom of the BSC this year since Rawson is on mission.....a 3-9 record so far does little to bolster your claims....geesh

BTW...it wasn't a bad loss to St Marys, it was an inevitable loss....

Maybe I should get back on my meds. I'm not saying that St Marys is a poor team or that SUU is better than their record might indicate. I'm just saying that on their home floor, with unbiased refs, it would be a much closer game and yes, SUU might have a chance. However, none of us have a chance at St Marys with WCC refs. They are purchasing 10 wins a year and they make no bones about it. Are they that good? Nobody really knows, they don't have to earn anything. Same goes for PACx. No wonder they get drummed out of the NCAA tourney most years. Are we on their level? Of course not. However, we are not as far behind as you would think just looking at head to head. Those teams are not coming to our places. The records might look a little different if they did. When is the last time Cal. visited the Hornets Nest? :wall:

That must be a helluva home court they got there in Cedar City if it can swing 56 pts back to SUU....spin it anyway you want to but we have a 3 wins over a Pac12 teams in the last 4 years because we will go to their houses and play...is there something different in that approach than Weber's formula?? And if you think St Marys needs refs to whip SUU you are in need of meds....

I'm not saying that they need it. I'm saying that they get it, needed or not. We were there with Damian a few years back and got a lead on them. It was amazing the stuff that went down after that. They had Delavedova at the time and probably would have won anyway, but the display the refs put on was simply out of this world. It was a guarantee game in more than one way. We went to UCLA a few years ago and got much better treatment. We lost, but at least the PAC12 refs made an effort to appear unbiased. You don't get that at most WCC venues. St Marys is a very good program and they really don't have a need for that kind of thing. However, they pay for it and, by goodness, they are going to get it. :twocents:

If you really want things to be more entertaining, the NCAA should step up and require "major conference teams" play more games on the road, and not just against other major teams, and not spend their entire OOC at home, More major teams need to adopt the motto "anybody anywhere". Small teams shouldn't have to do all the traveling.

Idaho has top RPI @122 Weber 2nd 143. Dunn expected to play for Montana in a couple weeks. I stand by my Weber to win pick. Mont 2nd. Tyler Hall freshman from Montana St. is killing it so far, playing at All BSC level. Would not be shocked if he transfers next season...heart was set on going high major but no bigs pulled the trigger .

Dunn played against Montana-Western last week, a bit rusty as you might expect, but had five assists.

Very generous of you to put us at 3 olds. If the Hornets find some consistency then I like our chances. We've been very scrappy so far, just need to play a full 40 minutes every game.

Looking strictly at records, Idaho is the biggest surprise to me so far. Given they graduated and transferred most of their top talent coupled with Verlins meltdown at NAU I didn’t expect much from them. I’m also surprised to see UND hanging around 500 (similar boat that Idaho was in coming into the season even though 3 wins are play downs) and obviously Montana State (decent schedule with mixed results).

Other end of the spectrum I have NAU (expected more even though they graduated a lot) and SUU (returned a lot). I just expected more from those teams, especially NAU with Yanku. I guess you could put UNC here too. They always seem to find good shooters that keep them competitive. It’s early but it’s looking like a down year for UNC. Maybe a lot of my feelings here has to do with expecting MSU and ISU to be in the cellar but both of those program have held their own so far with decent schedules.

Saw UM play earlier in the season and I was unimpressed, although they are young and I expect them to be fine with a healthy Dunn and Breunig. The Wildcats have had an inconsistent season so far, but I think things come together in BSC play. :twocents:
