Total meltdown

Very ugly game today. Totally fell off the rails in all three phases. Defense can't get themselves off the field. Offense is inept thru 3 quarters until Hennessy brings a spark. Special teams... wow, muffed FG, fumbled punt, fumbled kickoff.

I felt pretty good watching our D force two punts to start the game. But then is was like Elmer Fudd popped up and threw out a "That's All Folks!" We stopped bringing pressure and never forced another punt all game long. Damn, our safety play is bad. Probably the worst I've seen at EWU, maybe ever. PLaying these guys 15 yards off the ball is a mistake, IMO, but it's doubly bad when they can't even cover with that amount of turf in front of them. Might as well move to cover 1 or zero up and force the other team to beat us through the air. Letting teams walk up and down the field is just gruesome.

NAU is a solid, coherent football team, but they're nothing special. A legit FCS contender should have had no problem dispatching them at home. Montana will be fired up to end our streak in Missoula, and I don't know if we have it in our DNA to match a team with a high intensity level. Coach Baldwin will be earning his money this week trying to get all of this sorted out.

The defense had 19 tackles for loss today. They played well given the limitations they have this year with injuries and youth. The offense and special teams put them in really bad spots throughout the game and you're never going to win coughing the ball up a ton of times and not being able to run the ball. I have no idea what to expect next week in Missoula but we really need to win that game.

A couple things:

“You're never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you're never as bad as they say when you lose.”

“Life is 10 percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.”

I was with you on the first two drives. It seemed like we had finally turned a page. But then they started carving us up, pretty much at will. I think the realists on this board knew that this storm was brewing: West being one dimensional over the last few games, our d-line being less than stout against the run, and Raynes trying to cover the entire field by himself, absolutely stupid penalties, and dumb miscues on special teams.

Let us hope this beatdown brings the focus back, and helps our heads to fit into our helmets a little better.

Spot on!! Cannot blame defense today.

Already has earned his money......and more. Bad execution today that is all. We saw a rare loss on the Inferno today. Good on NAU. Let's get a win in Missoula! Go Eags.

I mentioned it in the predictions thread, but this loss should not have come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention this year. When you are playing a team as good as NAU you can't shoot yourself in the foot repeatedly. You can get away with that some when you are playing an Idaho State or something but you throw a pick 6 and then cough up the ball on the ensuing kickoff and it's game over.

We are an average team this year in rebuilding mode, and that's ok. Most teams won't post a winning record in that kind of situation. Winning another game or even two this season would be a major achievement considering all the glaring holes we have this year. Either way I will be out there cheering on the Eags but I am just being a realist here.

This conference keeps getting better from the bottom up. You can't turn it over 4 times and expect to win.

Refuse to bash the players or coaches. The boys will regroup and give it their all next weekend in Missoula.

I think that was the worst game I've ever seen in Cheney. The worst half still goes to the SHSU sem-final 1st half...but in every other game it has always been competitive.

4 turn overs?!?

I disagree. I thought our defense started well but fell apart late. We've got to learn to get off the field. They converted a LOT of third downs; without looking at stats, it felt like about 15 or so including several from long yardage. Yeah, you can't "blame" them as this was a bit of a wheels-fall-off game, and they certainly were no worse than the offense and special teams. But there were no gold stars to be handed out today.. it was poor just about everywhere you looked.

Any team can have a bad game. And we did. Good coaches will get the ship righted immediately and not let one bad outing turn into a season-killer. This is compounded by the fact Montana is a desperate team- desperate to keep their playoff bid alive and desperate to beat us for the first time in a while.

This will be a week in which we need Baldwin and staff to shine. Heads are probably hanging pretty low, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. We just got humbled. It happens, and it isn't the end of the world as long as we can quickly adjust. We've got to get the emotion flipped and come out fired out, not apprehensive or with a lack of confidence... Montana will be ready to go so beating them is a tough task.

4 turn overs?!?

The PSU game in 2011 sucked, but today was pretty bad...

I think we can all admit that at the beginning of the season we were looking a a 7-4, 8-3 finish.

Seems like that's we have here. Losing Raynes is a killer. For the the few playmakers on defense, he was one of them.

In terms of West, seems like he's regressing. Might be time to hand things over to Hennessey. Coach BB has always played the best players regardless of experience (Adams over Padron).

Season can still be salvaged, it's just one loss, but it's pretty obvious this isn't a team that will go too deep in the playoffs, assuming they even get there.

Been watching eagle football for the past 8 years always had a vested interest. Most guys posting on here were either ex-players or alumni and bleed Eagle red as do I. Those of you who are the supreme optimists I tip my hat to you, true Eagle supporters, others that have been not so optimistic I understand your disappointment. Speaking for myself, I am somewhere in the middle of those groups. The product and effort this year seems so sub-par for a Baldwin team, very little emotion on the sidelines and even less on the field. The defense or lack of has been am embarrassment, hasnt improved and seems to be slacking with effort. The offense, which was able to bailout the D in the past has been dismal as well of late, so un-Baldwin like I ask myself whos behind the wheel this year.Sticking with West these past 3 or 4 games leaves me scratching my head as to why? One must remember that West was a walk-on for a reason and that reason is now apparent. I'm not bashing the young man have met Jordan and have high regard for his efforts. The season may not be lost but challenges lie a head for this team and this coaching staff. To win one of the last two games this year and become playoff illegible seems to be a stretch. As others have posted would probably go down the first game anyways. This is Griz week and they are looking for revenge in a big way and with the effort weve put on the field these past few weekends it could be an ass kicking ! Enough said. Frustrated Eagle fan, Go Eags

*Well, after all this time LDopaPDX's credibility is now shot to shit. I concur with the total meltdown part. It happens to the best of em and we are one of the best.
