Here are my takes from some of the excerpts of the article. My issue with the Coach is the language he chooses to use about his team with the media and I am going to hold him accountable for his voluntarily comments about the young men of this team. This is not about winning or losing for me, this is about a leader who is showing no accountability.
University of Northern Colorado coach Earnest Collins, Jr., has a clear and consistent message for his players these days — it's time to buy in or get out.
Get out?? This is motivating to your players? I would suggest you read two books:
1) John Wooden's Pyramid of Success - "A leader who has loyalty is the leader whose team I wish to be a part of. And so do others. Most people, the overwhelming majority of us, wish to be in an organization whose leadership cares about them, provides fairness and respect, dignity and consideration. Loyalty is a most precious and powerful commodity within an organization. And it starts with the leader who knows what loyalty means."
2) Pete Carroll's Win Forever - "What if my job as a coach isn't so much to force or coerce performance as it is to create situations where players develop the confidence to set their talents free and pursue their potential to its full extent? What if my job is really to prove to these kids how good they already are, how good they could possibly become, and that they are truly capable of high-level performance?"
After four straight losses to start the season — including a 0-2 start in Big Sky Conference play in which UNC has been outscored 95-41 — Collins believes that the problem is that his players have not fully bought into what the coaching staff is trying to teach them.
As well as bad coaching and preparation during the week. Go ahead Coach, throw yourself in there somewhere.
Collins said after UNC’s homecoming loss to Weber State last Saturday and reiterated after practice on Tuesday that the biggest problem the Bears are having now is doing things the way the coaches want and trusting that it will work.
Is it possible that they don't understand what the coaches want them to do? Is there possibly an issue with communication from the staff? Just asking....
Collins said the Bears must “completely buy in” to what coaches are teaching them in order for them to take the next step and become a winning program.
Did Alcorn State players buy in? Is so, then why weren't they a "winning program"? (your words not mine) If not, then why is there 2 teams now that didn't believe in your system?
“So it is about buying in to the point to where you do exactly what you are supposed to do on every play, then the play will work,” Collins said. “Because there is no difference in us coming out in the first quarter and we can’t move the ball and we come out in the second half and we go right down the field on the same plays that we ran in the first half.”
It's called execution coach and every team strives for that. And yes there is a difference between playing in a 0-0 game and playing a game down 35-0. It's like a 3 ft putt for a round of 95 or a 3 ft putt for a round of 71. Big difference coach we all know it.
“It is kind of like a canvas,” Collins said. “If you have got a blank canvas, you can paint the canvas how you want to. If you have a canvas that has already been painted on, you have got to find somehow how to get paint thinner in there to get that paint off of there so you can get your own stuff in there. So, that is what we are going through right now.”
No coach has ever walked into a blank canvas. Good coaches work with the tools and canvas they were given and make the best of it. I highly doubt in your interview for the HC job did you indicate to the University that it will take you 4-5 years to get the program back on a winning track. Just my guess....
Hernon said the best way to get those players who were not on board yet to buy in is to hold them accountable, but at the same time keep a positive attitude toward them.
“You don’t want to put anybody out on an island,” he said.
No you sure don't but apparently there is an Island it's called the Get-Out Island.
Collins said that eventually the kids have to buy into it or they are going to keep losing.
THEY are going to keep losing or did you mean WE are going to keep losing? I'm sure you meant WE.
However, he is confident that they are not going to continue losing in the future because he is going to get guys into the program that are going to buy into what he is doing.
Again, success is from execution not because of a particular style of football. If new recruits don't execute, you will still lose. Execution comes from repetition and coaching, not a philosophy.
“And those that buy in are going to play and be successful and those that won’t, they are going to have a losing season until we get them replaced,” Collins said.
We will hold you to that coach, in all fairness then, how many years should we wait to hold you accountable, since you clearly don't want to be accountable for THEM right now.
