Troxel New OC

Troxel is young with no expirrence.. Rob Phenicie would have been my choice plenty of play calling under his belt

Phoenicie promoted to assistant head coach. Hope that means he's goi going to spend a lot of time with special teams.

Here is the official release with quotes:

POCATELLO, Idaho- Idaho State football coach Mike Kramer has announced that Assistant Head Coach for Offense Matt Troxel has been named offensive coordinator. Troxel replaces Sheldon Cross as the offensive coordinator. Cross returned home to the Seattle area to take over as the head football coach at Kennedy Catholic High School. Kramer has also promoted Rob Phenicie to Assistant Head Coach for the Offense.

"We appreciate the time Sheldon put in to better the Idaho State football program," Kramer said. "His offensive input made us dynamic and record setting. We wish he and his family the best in their upcoming move."

Kramer will announce coaching position assignments at a later date.

Cross has been with the Bengals for three years and he has been instrumental in the offense shattering school records. Cross, who served as the outside wide receivers coach his first two seasons, just concluded his first year as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

In Cross' first year the receiver trio of Cameron Richmond, Chad Hansen and Broc Malcom combined to catch 152 passes for 1,670 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The 2014 season saw Madison Mangum earn first-team all-conference while catching 83 passes for 1,234 yards and 10 touchdowns. The 83 receptions and 1,234 receiving yards ranked third in the ISU all-time single-season record books and the 10 touchdowns was fourth.

Cross' receiving core in 2014 caught passes from record-setting quarterback Justin Arias, who was a finalist for the Walter Payton Trophy. That season Arias became only the ninth quarterback in Idaho State history to throw for over 4,000 yards (4,076). The 2014 offense scored a school record 64 touchdowns and broke the single-season rushing record with 2,567 yards.

Cross came to Idaho State after spending the 2012 season at Illinois State coaching the tight ends and H-Backs.

Troxel has been an assistant coach at Idaho State since Kramer arrived in November of 2010. He has been the offensive line coach since 2013 where he established one of the best units in the Big Sky Conference.
In 2014 the offensive line allowed only 15 sacks and the offense racked up a school record 6,744 total yards. The offense produced 2,567 rushing yards and 4,177 passing yards.

Phenicie was the wide receivers coach in 2015. He came to ISU after spending five seasons at UNLV. He has a solid background in the Big Sky as he also coached at Montana from 2003-09.

Troxel will be very good. I look for Troxel to tell Kramer on day one he is running the show on offense... Cannot have Kramer calling the plays as he does not know what he is doing... Better for Kramer to work with the OL during practice. Give him something to do....

Since we hired within existing staff, that leaves one position open.
I see it like this.

Troxel - new O.C.
Phenicie - assistant coach of offence.

But who goes to wide receivers coach, and who goes to offensive line coach? Since we keep both Troxel and Phenicie on staff, then no knowledge and coaching ability of those two positions is lost for the wide receivers and O-line. So being that there's one vacant salary, can we just leave Troxel and Phenicie continue to help guide some other position coaches for O-line and receivers, and higher Justin Arias as a dedicated QB coach. We're lucky enough to have Justin still living in Pocatello and hanging around the team already. He has a career with ICCU, and last I heard was looking to get on with the Pocatello Police. A second income as a part time coach would be great for him, and us.

My guess is they keep their present position assignments and we hire a QB coach.
That works just fine with me. But I think if we have a decent QB coach, Tanner and Robert can both be pretty damn good!

Do you think Kramer wants to coach the QB's? He seems to know about catch, set, and release.. He talks about those three things to the media all of the time..
No I don't. Do you?

Yes.. I can see him being the QB coach. Prepare him for the NFL someday as an QB coach. He wants his QB's to throw a lot of TD's so he should take on those responsibilities. Add to his CV.

Kramer never has been a QB coach during his collegiate coaching career, and he wouldn't know the first thing about developing a quarterback. During his collegiate coaching career he's mostly been a secondary and linebackers coach, and he's also had some experience as a defensive coordinator. Although a few years ago he was our defensive coordinator and that turned out to be a disaster and he fired himself from doing that. And last year he was our special teams coordinator for a while, and that was a disaster as well. I think he should just stick to doing what he does best and just be a head coach.

That has been a disaster too at ISU...Folks we have to come to the realization that if Kramer has another losing season in the Big Sky in 2016 that he will probably go fishing in his new boat and ISU will start looking for a new head coach. We cannot afford to continue ending up in the cellar almost every year. I hope Kramer can turn it around in 2016 but it is very unlikely unless the players he signed for the 2016 season are all star type of players. Go Bengals...

I agree that we need to always be signing all star type of players, but I don't feel it's the players that he signs this year that will make the difference. I feel that we have A LOT of talent on the team already. Out defensive backs will get a boost from Manu and Jenkins. The key thing this year is ...Can the coaching staff work well together? (I like that were all in house and no new personalities to try to mold I to the fold) and.. Can someone with QB coaching ability give Tanner the coaching he needs to break open his talent?
I do think UFTC is right in one area of recruiting for this coming year... return specialist is a need. I feel the other positions can be developed.

In my view next year is all about two things: coaching and quarterback. Will ISU have the coaching firepower to improve Gueller, to put decent special teams on the field, and put together a competitive defense? The pieces are there to compete, but as we saw this year, you need excellent quarterbacking to win at this level. And when you are a borderline program, you can't continue to commit suicide by special teams.

Kramer is quiet with public announcements regarding his assistant coaches being shuffled around or leaving or entering program. Why is that? I read or listen to the media with other head coaches making assistant coaching changes after the season ends. Who is going to be the QB coach? Have to think Kramer or Troxel. Spring ball will be starting soon. Thanks Kramer for keeping the fans updated...

I don't believe it's unreasonable to wonder who the new position coaches are. It's fun to hear those things, and have the new knowledge. That being said, I think Kramer does not like to say anything about "inside business" that he doesn't have to. The other coaches that do a lot of talking and news info sometimes just like to hear themselves.
UPTC, I'm curious too. I'll do some asking g around in the next few days.
