Troy Taylor

Right out of our back yard, too. This guy made more quarterbacks (and made good ones better) in high school than anyone I've heard of recently.

I honestly have always wondered why he was not looked at by Sac St. Well, if/when Sears flames out in a few years we're looking at a likely candidate.

Just so we know 1/3 of Sac State Roster are local athletes. Paul Peterson did have a top 10 offense in the country in 2014. I am not ready to bag him yet. If you want to go local players all time if we took Dano Graves, Safron would not have been here, I think the Hornets got it done, glad he did not commit to Sac State

EWU has only 4 players from the Sac Joaquin Section, three from Stockton. I don't know how that equals being out recruited by EWU in our own backyard. I like the trend toward talent local players. Although it turned out well with Safron, when Graves backed out to go to for Air Force I was disappointed.
Graves was so high profile out of HS I think he could have added some cred and interest for the program, especially with local players. On the field I'm not sure he wouldn't have had the same type role as he does at Poly, as a back up.

The kid who returned 4 td's as punts/ ko's was from Sac area and the kid a few years ago who was nuclear for them was a Sac region grad. Quality over quantity.

I know it’s cool to have some local/regional HS recruited to Sac State. But most of our standout players have been coming from outside of the Sac area.
All BSC players since 2010 (includes honorable mentions, multiple selections not shown):
Sankey – San Jose
Harrison – Chatsworth (LA area)
Robinson – Chino Hills (Riverside/LA area)
Heath - Chico
Hanson – Palm Desert (Palm Springs area)
Agude – Corona (Riverside area)
Carter – San Jose
Safron – Santa Monica
Totty – Exeter (Visalia area)
Kendall – Reno (JC transfer)
Milanovic - Austria
Nielsen -Eugene, OR (FBS transfer)
Cornish – Santee (San Diego area)
Broadnax – Vacaville (all-BSC honorable mention)
Cowger – Madera (all-BSC honorable mention)
Fernandez – Oxnard (LA area, all-BSC honorable mention)
Smith – Loomis (all-BSC honorable mention, left team early)
Worthley – Dublin
Davis – Palmdale
Weldon – Madera (JC transfer)
Norrise - Berkeley
Williams – Vacaville (all-BSC honorable mention)
Odiase – Santa Fe Springs (LA area)
Badger – Windsor (all-BSC honorable mention)
Graham – Carson (LA area, JC transfer, all-BSC honorable mention)
Knowles - Las Vegas (FBS transfer, all-BSC honorable mention)
Lawrence – Patterson (all-BSC honorable mention)
McMahon – Laverne (LA area, FBS transfer, all-BSC honorable mention)
White – Manteca (all-BSC honorable mention)
Nash – Vacaville
Doverspike – Sacto
Monson – San Diego area (JC transfer)
Larche – Hayward (JC transfer, all-BSC honorable mention)
Buck - Vacaville
Clark - LA
Deadder - Modesto
Fleming – Fullerton (LA area, FBS transfer)
Schrader – Issaquah, WA (D2 transfer)
Taylor - Stockton
Coleman – Palmdale (all-BSC honorable mention)
Diniz1 – Escalon (Manteca area, JC transfer, all-BSC honorable mention)
Hilliard – Sacto (all-BSC honorable mention)

8 of the 42 all-BSC selections (includes honorable mentions, excludes multiple year selections) since 2010 are from the Sacramento area. I included Stockton, Vacaville and Loomis as the Sac area.

Current standout players are mostly from outside the region too:
K-Ham – San Diego area
Hennie – San Diego area
Robinson – LA area
Banks – Sacto
Obinna – Tracy
Pearson – LA area
Scott-Anderson – Vallejo (Elk Grove HS)
Clark – Redding area
Sorensen – Fresno area

While I think it would be great PR to land more quality local recruits, it’s pretty obvious this program should be recruiting the entire state and bringing in the best talent it can from wherever it can. That includes JC and FBS transfers.

I consider the Sac Joaquin Section as our region. Many of the athletes mentioned are from the SJS.
The SJS is not just the immediate Sacramento area, it runs from Madera on the south to Yuba City on the North to Vallejo on the west.
This is the area of HS sports that is covered by our local media. The programs and athletes are recognizable.
Kids pick schools for all types of reasons, academic standards and character expectations seem to vary in the BSC, some kids just want a little distance and independence. My hope is that we get at least a good number of the better SJS athletes that are headed to play FCS football.
Bottom line is that we are trying to sell the Sac State Brand, and that begins locally.

Great to recruit in Southern California, there is a lot great talent down there. Unfortunately I don't think people are as much aware of Sac State down there as they are of Poly or the Dungpile. Even though the football team never plays in Southern California being in the Big West for the other sports would help keep Sac State Athletics in people's minds and would help our recruiting in all sports. I think we are about on the same recruiting footing in Southern California as the out of state BSC schools, we should have an advantage. We sure don't get much exposure being shipped off to Grand Forks ND except for maybe frostbite!

I think it is more statistical related than what the actual footprint is. You just get more bang for the recruiting buck by going to SoCal and the Bay Area. There is just more talent to go around (slip through the cracks) in those other areas vs here in the Sac-Stockton area after the FBS program get their pick of the crop. It just makes more sense to spend more time and resources recruiting those other areas of Cali.

Population
Greater Los Angeles Area: 18.5M
San Diego County: 3.2M
Bay Area: 7.5M
Sac Metro Area: 2.2M
Stockton Metro Area: 715k

I've brought up Troy Taylor's name as HC candidate for the Hornets several times over the past couple years. I think we'll see why fairly soon. The guy is a QB guru and a great offensive mind. I knew the Hornets would get beat to the punch for his services, I just didn't expect it to be EWU. I guess it could have been worse had he gone to UCD. Oh well.
