Two buildings belonging to Sacramento State University near Power Inn Road and Folsom Boulevard were destroyed by a three-alarm fire early this morning.

The fire at the two vacant structures once owned by the California Youth Authority on Ramona Avenue was first reported shortly after midnight.

Sacramento firefighters were on the scene within minutes, but the buildings were already burning intensely, the blaze already going through the roofs of both buildings. Firefighters set up around the buildings to keep the fire from spreading.

The fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal's office because the buildings were owned by Sac State.

No injuries were reported, authorities said, and 75 firefighters responded to the blaze.

I had a buddy out there doing soil testing there when Sac State acquired that lot. He said it was a huge hangout for transients and his supervisor had him take a sheriff with him just to be safe. It looks like the demolition of those buildings will be a lot cheaper and easier now.

Kinda interesting that the Bee is making a big deal about Sac State owning the buildings. In the CBS-13 news reports, that was almost an afterthought if mentioned at all. The big point THEY stressed was that they were at one point owned by the CYA. Perhaps that's where the investigation's leading? A former inmate or inmate's family member wanting revenge by torching a place, not knowing that it wasn't in use for that purpose anymore?
