MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS A PAIR OF BIG MEN IN MICHAEL SELLING AND AJ KAPANOSKE
5/2/2008
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State first-year head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz announced today that his fifth and sixth recruits have signed with the program – 6-8, 225-pound forward Michael Selling from American River College, and 6-8, 235-pound forward Aj Kapanoske from Irvine Valley College. Both will enroll as juniors at Sacramento State in the fall.
Katz, who was hired to take over the coaching duties on April 10, has now signed six student-athletes in a 23-day span. Those signees include a point guard, combo guard, swingman and three forwards.
A native of Folsom, Calif., Selling spent the past three years at American River College (redshirted in 2006-07), and prepped at Folsom High School. Selling was an honorable mention all-Big 8 Conference selection last season after averaging 10.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 48.0 percent (143-298) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-22) from the three-point line. He was one of two players on the team to play in all 34 games for a Beavers squad that finished 21-13 overall and 9-5 in the Big 8.
As a freshman in 2005-06, Selling averaged 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 46.4 percent (97-209) from the field. He played in seven games in 2006-07 before suffering an injury and redshirting the season.
Selling played four years at Folsom High School, where he was an all-Delta League selection as a senior after averaging 9.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while shooting 50.0 percent (95-190) from the field.
“I’ve seen Michael play since high school and he has really worked hard to improve his game,” Katz said. “He is a very solid low and high post player that became formidable in the Big 8 Conference. Michael is very strong, has a nice touch and is a good passer. Like each of our recruits, he comes from a winning program and has been well coached.”
A native of Corona, Calif., Kapanoske spent both his freshman (2006-07) and sophomore (2007-08) seasons at Irvine Valley College. Last year, he played for a Laser team that reached the Southern California Playoff Regional Finals, finished with a school-record 27-5 record, and three players from the squad have now signed Div. I scholarships.
Kapanoske was the back-up center (behind Bryce Webster, who signed at Utah State) in 2007-08 and posted averages of 3.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 70.3 percent (45-64) from the field. He scored in double figures four times, including 14 points and seven rebounds against Santa Monica College. As a freshman at Irvine Valley, Kapanoske started 18 of 27 games while averaging 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He shot 51.9 percent (55-106) from the field, and scored in double figures six times.
Kapanoske prepped at Lutheran High School in Orange, Calif., where he helped lead the team to a 21-9 overall record, an Empire League championship and a CIF semifinal appearance during his senior season (2005-06). That year, he was an all-league selection after averaging 9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and a league-leading 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 54.9 percent (72-131) from the field.
“Aj can shoot it well, and is a very good passer for a big man,” Katz said. “His numbers won’t jump out at you, but he has a big upside. When he came out of high school, he weighed only 200 pounds. He has worked very hard in the weight room and added 35 pounds over the last two years. So, we know we’re getting a hard-working kid from a winning program that knows how to play.”
Besides Selling and Kapanoske, the Hornets’ 2008-09 recruiting class now consists of Fresno City College point guard Mike Marcial (signed on April 29), American River combo guard Jared Stigall (April 29), Diablo Valley College swingman Antonio Flaggs (April 23) and San Joaquin Delta College forward Aaron Wilson (April 16).
Katz was hired on April 10 to take over a Sacramento State team that finished the 2007-08 season with a 4-24 overall record and a 2-14 mark in the Big Sky Conference.
