two signing dates?

How does it work now with new NCAA rules concerning signing day? Is the first signing day a "period" meaning it will have a closing? If so then will the original signing date still be in effect?

The early signing period runs from December 20-22. Anyone who doesn’t sign during this time can sign during the normal window in February.

So, what is the impact for FBS and FCS teams? Do FCS teams get a few higher end players during the Feb signing who don't sign in the early period and find themselves without a scholie because their FBS offer disappears as a team signs another player early? It certainly has to effect JC transfers who have to compete with HS players right? FCS can get a few more top JC's maybe? (if we could snag a JC DL, RB or DB that would be sweet)

Haven't followed the speculation, but it feels like early Christmas to me :-)

This might be a good year to find a couple JCs or transfers. I know that's not really our modus operandi, but getting a ready-made DT or LB would be a big help based on what we saw during the previous year.

As I watched part of or all of playoff games, we can use help in lots of places.
You crack me up, Mr. Definitive. You started this thread, any thoughts on how the early signing period will affect the type of recruits EWU will get?

Not sure I agree we need help in "lots of places". Don't want to split hairs, can always use upgrades to increase competition and think this is true of the coaching staff as well.

Still see the early period as a way to capture some better talent at the February signing when they miss out or are undecided, but would love to get some other informed insights. Certainly think it will take some players off the board allowing coaches to focus on best recruits available down the stretch. Could be wrong.

Negative impacts?

Here's 247Sports take on what the early signing period may mean...

https://247sports.com/Article/247Sp...ing-Early-Signing-Period-storylines-112074932

Not to be lost in the shuffle is JUCO Signing Day. This date used to be theirs alone. Ohio State holds a commitment from 247Sports’ top-ranked JUCO prospect Antwuan Jackson. In those same rankings, Alabama has the No. 2 player, corner Saivion Smith, Mississippi State has the fourth-best, wideout Stephen Guidry and Georgia’s got the No. 5 prospect, defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt. As you can see, there’s the usual SEC flair in the chase for the top JUCO prospects. The No. 3 player, Teair Tart-Spencer, is actually tops in the 247Sports Composite’s JUCO rankings. The East Mississippi C.C. product (Last Chance U) has just one Crystal Ball prediction and it’s to Alabama.

Interesting take. As I watched the playoffs, I continued to believe EWU was shafted and was easily at least a quarterfinal team. Bottom line, EWU would have lost against NDSU or JMU and probably even a Sam Houston St, but was better than most teams in the field...but I'm not bitter. It's not like a 7 seed Wofford lost by a bigger margin to NDSU than we did in our second game of the season after major off season changes.

I think we need linebacker help and more D line depth. With those two things, the team will be in the national mix next year.

We have two DT commits already, which is great; a good 3 star JC would really solidify things on the line with our young talent, Tiuli coming back (I hope) and the plethora of returning seniors. Dopa pointed out LB as well and am inclined to agree even though I love the young LB's like Ojoh and hope Trevor Davis can make it back (love his speed), one more good solid JC would help depth

EWU was definitely a top 12 team by talent so it was a little painful to watch some of these playoff games. Was pleasantly rewarded by the Kennesaw team who played well against Samford and Jacksonville St, then fought hard on the road at SHSU. Wofford underperformed at NDSU.

Looking forward to the Eags putting it all together this coming season.

We don't need major help in most or even "many" areas. Our offensive and defensive lines were beat up the majority of the season. WR's were young and not on the same page as our QB during the early portion of the season. We had a QB coach get promoted to OC late in the game, having to replace arguably the best offensive player in Big Sky history and two other NFL quality receivers. This was supposed to be a down year, and despite all of this adversity a brand new coaching staff found a way to win 7 Division I games. All you need to do is look at the past few recruiting classes to see what the future of the program is. Playmakers all over the field and with another off-season under the belts of the staff we'll be right back in national title contention. We lose exactly one player off of the offense. The O will be in the top 3 nationally next year.

Granted, we do need help at LB and DT, but more in terms of competitive depth because we seem to get riddled with injuries there every year.

8-3 in the regular season next year at worst, and I think we'll be better than that.

Love the SALTY attitude Ranger. Agree with your assessment as we have some of the best depth in FCS, right now the 18 class looks great and hoping for one or two upside surprises like the Sise transfer.

Same here. A DT transfer with game experience from a P5 school would really do wonders for this class. Someone who can contribute right away.

According to the SR, Best had a better debut at 7-4 than Wulff and Baldwin at 6-5. Best probably had a more talented team though... I don't want to rag on the coaches too much, but I do think inexperienced hurt, especially at OC. Not saying we should dump the guy, but I'm sure there was a lot of on the job learning going on coaching OC at the FCS level.

I'm going to say we win 9 games next year and win the Big Sky.

eaglesfootball,
I agree, we need another Andru Pulu, Albert Havali for our DL. #49 Jim Townsend who RS llast year, will be ready for this year. I just hope all Players return this. Players are supposed to be back by Jan 7th, 2018> Sometime in January we should have our Recruits meeting at Quest. I am like EWURanger, I taught this was going to be a down year, we are far from that. Now can't wait for the Season get started. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic E. Wallace

This is going to be interesting tomorrow and through the next couple of days. It will be interesting to see how many verbals sign and if there are any surprises good or bad in the early period. How 12/23 through 02-7 plays out will be new. Selfishly, I really liked going to or listening to the NLI day show at Quest. Clearly nothing is scheduled for the early signing period, and it appears that no other schools have NLI events scheduled for the early period either. It will be interesting to see if EWU holds signing day events in February. Feels a little like peeking at your presents early but at least there are presents.

To All,
We should have signees after 08:00 am today. Noticed this information on the Eagle Athletics Area. We will get some great Athletes from what I have heard. Merry Christmas to all. Supposed to be cold in the 18 degrees bracket on Monday and Tuesday, single numbers in the evenings. Basketball (Men) tonight at 6:30 p.m. against Providence. Reece Court. Vic

On another note... if you know of pets that are kept outside, make sure they have dry bedding and some shelter.
