UC DAVIS AGGIES

WILDCAT

On Saturday the #18/#23 ranked Wildcats welcome UC Davis to Stewart Stadium for the Annual Wildcat Homecoming game. The game will be broadcasted on KJZZ

This will be the 6th meeting between the two schools with Weber State leading the all time series against the Aggies 3-2 including two in a row. Despite there only being 5 games in the series it has been a competitive series. The Wildcats are 2-1 against the Aggies at home and 1-1 in Davis.

UC Davis has come out on fire early this year beating both 2016 playoff participant San Diego and Portland State on the road. Outscoring both of them by a combined 72-21  . The Aggies are fast on defense and create a bunch of turnovers especially in their win over PSU.

The Wildcats are going to have a big game on their hands this weekend. UC Davis is no slouch this year. Weber better be prepared. Altitude has been our friend against the California schools but we'll need more than that this weekend.

GO WILDCATS

Other Big Sky action this weekend.
Eastern Washington (1-2) @ Montana (2-1)
Idaho State (2-1) @ Northern Colorado (1-1)
Montana State (0-2) @ North Dakota (1-2)
Southern Utah (2-1) @ Sacramento State (1-2)
Northern Arizona (0-2) @ Cal Poly (0-3)

Really don't know what to make of UC Davis. Offensively, they have definitely improved. The last two weeks they have averaged almost 550 yards of total offense. Do I think their competition is exceptional? Yes and No. Yes, San Diego was a playoff team, but they are non-scholie and it is really hard maintaining that level from year to year without scholarship players. They had a very senior laden and experienced team last year. Does that mean UC Davis' win over them was a fluke? No, they totally took care of business and thoroughly demolished a team that they should demolish.

The PSU game is what is really interesting. PSU had two really good games against FBS competition. However, how good are those two FBS schools? Right now...bad. But, they are still FBS. I think PSU had an emotional let down after their close upset of OSU. That was their superbowl and they came so close but still lost (I was worried that Weber would experience the same thing against Sac; maybe they did). Against UC Davis they were going through the motions. UC Davis came in and put a beat down. The Vikings might have been looking at UC Davis and thinking 2016 instead of seeing a new team. Also, lets be honest, PSU might not be that good. Regardless, UC Davis was supposed to be worse and went up to Portland and totally annihilated the Vikings. The score is a lot closer than what it should have been.

So, Saturday at Stewart Stadium? What should we expect? I think it will be a grudge match. We did not look sharp against Sac (we rarely do since the Mac days) and need to really fix some serious issues. Weber's line was having a terrible time of picking up the blitz and giving Cantwell time to throw. Yes, I know, we have a young line, but the difference between the Cal and Sac games was definitely noticeable. Gotta be more consistent. Defensively, our secondary has to show up and not point fingers. Too many blown coverage's last Saturday and we need to put more pressure on the QB. Can't give a QB 6 to 8 seconds. This weeks QB is far better than last weeks. Finally, we need more passing options for Cantwell. Us the TE's more effectively and get better routes out of the WRs.

Hey Weber fans,

WILDCAT already made his way over the the UCD forum so I figured I would drop by and say hi. UCD fans are cautiously excited about what Dan Hawkins has brought to the table for our program. We're a different team from last season with new players in key roles and a new offense that at least so far this season has looked dangerous. We even looked decent offensively against San Diego State who is now ranked in the FBS top 25. Hawkins promised us a lighting offense, but our defense has surprised me. I was pretty shocked how well they kept PSU checked. PSU's 2nd TD came in garbage time against depth guys. Anyway looking forward to a great game this Saturday! Don't be shy and come join our discussion as well at aggiesportstalk.com (it's our new forum, the one linked at the bottom of your forum is to the old yuku forum).

I'm pretty excited to watch this game. If any Davis fans are planning on making the trip to Ogden, please be aware that the Weather is supposed to be quite turbulent the second half of the week. Saturday is going to have late October type temperatures for kickoff. By the time the game ends, temps could be in the mid 40s. So, please bring warm clothes. Normally, a late September game in Ogden Utah, is a very nice experience, but; you're in the rockies!

By the way, there wasn't an injury report for this week. Is it possible, for the first time in a long time, that we aren't missing any key players?

Sacks allowed!!! Need I say more? If the starting OL isn't getting it done put in the #2.
Yes, the Sac D exposed some shortcomings along the line. Their blitzing gave us some problems. I'm sure that has been a point of emphasis in practice this week. I am also sure that we will see similar things out of UCD this week. We all knew that having a young O line would be an issue to be dealt with. There have been some plusses and some minuses. We just need to keep making steps in the right direction and I am sure that everyone involved is trying to do just that.

I feel that our D needs to create more turnovers and give up less big plays. Hopefully, getting some key guys back from injury will help. :coffee:

I guess it all depends on your weather preference. I absolutely love watching football in the cold and snow. On a non-stormy day, I prefer 50°-60° temperatures. I decided to take a look at the climatology for September 23rd and compare to the forecast for this Saturday. Since I have over 20 years of data from my weather station at home I used my data. I'm up against the mountains like Stewart Stadium and at a similar altitude, just further south but it should be pretty comparable.

Welcome to the board CA Forever. Looks like we're gonna have quite the battle on our hands. I watched Football Gameplans FCS kickoff week 4 and they had our game as one of the ones to keep an eye on. Gonna be a good one.

Thanks WILDCAT! I agree that this should be a very good game. I personally am giving you guys the edge in this one just because I've become a very cautious person regarding any success the Aggies are having thanks to the disaster that was the Ron Gould era at UC Davis. I was a bit surprised by the result of the WSU Sac State game. I'm curious if the Hornets are any better this season or if it was just one of those games for the Wildcats. Anyway, I fully expect you guys to put up a helluva fight on Saturday!

It was a strange game in Sacramento. We had 21 first downs to Sac's 9. We came out dominant and then just seemed to put it in neutral. Give Sac some credit though, they were playing with a lot of emotion. That is something we haven't seen for a long time. We threw a pick 6 to them early in the second half and it seemed to build a fire under them. That game was a good learning experience for both teams.

Hello there CA Forever! Welcome to our board! I was able to travel to UC Davis for last season's game and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Great atmosphere, stadium, fans, and most importantly game (I'll admit it, I almost had a heart-attack that was a close one). Ever since Davis joined the Sky for football, I've wanted to see the Davis stadium and it definitely wasn't a let-down.

As for the Sac game. Well...Weber has struggled playing in Sacramento for some reason. I'm not complaining because Sac struggles in Ogden. Even the year we were blowing teams away and the Cats won the conference (2008), Weber barely escaped Sac with a W. That was also the last time Weber beat Sac St. at their place.

Next, Jody Sears has developed as a coach. He definitely wasn't ready to be a HC in Ogden, especially going into the cluster fire created by John L., and wasn't really ready for the HC job in Sac, but I think he is learning from his mistakes and making necessary changes. He has abandoned his 3-3-5 defense in favor of a more traditional 4-3-4 and it shows in game results. Personally, I feel that Sac is a much better team than they were a year ago. Will results be different? Sac will be tougher and their games more competitive, but offensively they still struggle. No matter, they are improved. Also, because of Sears being their HC, playing Weber tends to drive their emotions a bit. They want to win for their coach over his former team.

Another issue that could have affected last weeks results was having to travel to CA a week after an emotional loss. Weber beat Cal in every statistic except where it counted the most; the final score. That could have hurt the Cats a bit. Coach Hill was preaching to his players that he didn't want Cal to beat them twice. To get over the loss and move on.

Other factors could be getting a big lead quick and then putting on the brakes a bit. I think after getting up 24-0 that the coaches started to work on new plays that really hurt our momentum. Also, Sac gained some confidence on defense, got a defensive score and grabbed a lot of the momentum. They definitely were playing with some moxie whenever Cantwell tried to pass.

UC Davis has the #1 pass offense right now in the Big Sky, Weber has the #1 pass defense in the Big Sky.

Sets up quite the matchup.

I will say that after watching our game @ Sac we really need to make sure we don't get beat deep, cause UC Davis' QB is far more accurate than Sac's and he will burn us.

If you had a good time last time you made the trip you should try to make the trip again next time we play in Davis. We have a new Athletics Director and he immediately made a bunch of stadium upgrades. We put in a new jumbo tron that is supposedly now the biggest in the Big Sky, have way more food options including a fantastic BBQ place, and have expanded beer sales if that fancies your taste. Honestly, the football program feels night and day with the new AD and Hawkins at the helm.

As far as the game goes, I don't know if you guys have watched any Davis games this season but this isn't Ron Gould's painfully slow offense anymore. Obviously you guys are hoping for a win, but hopefully the Aggies put up an impressive performance just from an appreciation of football standpoint for you guys.

I don't care for that, it sure seems that passing O beats pass D more often than not in the BSC. You're right, problems in the secondary that weren't noticeable at Cal were on display at Sac .

Hoping for cold, wind, rain, and snow.

I just want an exciting game with Weber State winning, of course. :-D

I pick the Cats in a thrilling shootout 45-38.

Under Jay Hill Weber has focused on playing strong tight defense, entertaining and jaw-dropping special teams, and to establishing the run on offense. He can be very tricky on offense though. Teams will come in focusing on stopping the run and then he comes out passing. My concern is the OL. The line is very young and has been good so far. They had some issues against Sac St., but I'm hoping that the coaches have been able to address those issues and fix them this week. If Cantwell has time he makes things happen. The OL has to improve its pass protection if Coach Hill wants to keep the team two-dimensional.

Cool info, thanks for providing. It's definitely going to be colder than the 72 degree average. That should benefit the team from Utah over the team from Cali.

Agreed!! This is definitely neat. I think weather and altitude will influence the way Davis comes out and plays.
