UC Davis at Portland State

Talk about perfect conditions for a home football game in October tomorrow.

Low 80s, late afternoon kick, UO isn't playing and OSU should be wrapped up by game time.

Hopefully we can have a good crowd on hand.

Hey guys! Looking forward to a great game tomorrow. There's 6 of us coming to support the Aggies.

Both teams need a "W". Here's to a good game! :thumb:

I watched Eastern beat Davis last week, and Davis is mediocre at best. This is a should-win game for Portland State. Davis moved the ball fairly well in the first half before Eastern changed their defense at halftime to pushing their LBs up to the line of scrimmage and playing press coverage in the secondary. Portland State can shut down Davis with their defense, because Davis struggles mightily with pressure and being forced to throw over the top.

Defensively, Davis is nothing special, either. PSU should be able to have pretty good success, whether they choose to do it on the ground or through the air. The one thing Eastern didn't try to do was run laterally from the backfield, and I know PSU does a lot of that, so that may be a question mark. Eastern did throw a lot of bubble screens to the flat and met decent success.

I'll take PSU by 2-3 TDs in this one.

I'd like to see us disguise our defensive looks against UC Davis out of the gate like we were doing in the second half of the Western game. We have the ability to bring pressure, so if we can get their QB into a position where he's really not sure of the look that he's facing and the heat comes, I think good things will come of that.

Good win.

We always fail to put the nail in the coffin, and we did that again tonight, but I think this was a good solid win.

Some thoughts:

- McDonagh. He had some key drops on good throws. He did throw a terrible, terrible pick, but overall, I thought he played well. Give him those drops as completions and he's probably closer to 60% for a completion rate.

- Tempo. It was a big increase in tempo for the offense tonight. If you're going to run the up tempo game that it looked like we wanted to run, you have to be ready both on and off the field. It appeared (I could be wrong), that the offense was in position and ready many times, but the play was not signaled in. All the players were set, but staring at the sideline. Hell, give McDonah carte blanche and let him run the up tempo as it should be run. I'm not saying that's the best route, but if you want to run up tempo, you can't wait and stare at the sideline.

- DEFENSE! 240 total yards given up with only 44 on the ground. Only gave up 2-12 on 3rd downs. Hats off to the defense. The D should get the game ball for the game tonight.

- Late 4th Quarter. 6:52 to to go: run, run, run, pass, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, FG. That is how you win a football game.

- I love me some Steven Long running the ball, but he absolutely blew up a guy on special teams tonight with a block in front of Tago. Please keep him on special teams, as well on offense.

It's been a while since a Vikings has kicked a field goal that long in a game. 53 yards. Nice work by Gonzales.

Definitely nice to see the kicking game come back. I was wondering why we were trying a 50+ yard kick at the time, given our recent lack of success. Kudos to Gonzales and kudos to the coaches who had faith in him. I certainly did not.

One thing, too. The fourth down conversion on our last drive. It looked like Davis was thinking we were just going to try to draw them offsides. It didn't look like they were ready for an actual play.

Good win and good finish. On to North Dakota.

I'll take the win even though We failed to put away an inferior opponent with a weak effort in the 3rd quarter.
Our passing game is still too weak to beat a decent BSC team.

The running game looked better. Mix it up a little more with some inside/outside stuff and we may have something.

Defensively much better tackling overall and good pursuit. They really dominated the first half on defense.
