UNC and the NFL

Does anyone from the 2008 roster have a chance to get picked up by an NFL team? Who from next season's team (if any) will have the best chance to get looked at by the NFL?

Yeah the reality is we don't have that kind of talent. Even at our best we'll only have a guy like that every five to ten years or so maybe. Having Vincent Jackson and Doughty here together was a fluke.

The Big Sky as a conference has a couple guys drafted each year and that doesn't guarantee making a roster so the likelyhood of one or two of the best guys in the conference playing at UNC are pretty slime considering how terrible we are.

I thought Sarmento might get an invite to the combine but he didn't and he was pretty damn dominant at this level so that tells you it's a huge leap from the Big Sky to the NFL and maybe one guy a year can do that.

But regarding our current roster, nobody has shown thusfar they have that talent. Now if someone emerges this season and shows that level of talent then all the better but I'll believe it when I see it.

Sarmento I think has a decent chance to get picked up. After watching the NFL Scouting Combine I don't think he will play linebacker. Those men are pretty big and fast. What other position could he play? I heard a couple of the guys on NFL Network talk about a lot of coaches draft on size alone. Is that true?

I'd say MAYBE Wags, depending on how good of a season he has this coming year. I'm not saying he'll get invited to the combine, but he might get some looks.

I didn't mean any disrespect to you noname with my response to your question. I was just venting my frustration with our "program." Part of my frustration is that we haven't had that player whose number repeatedly gets called throughout the games because he's making big plays. I've been a UNC fan for a long time and I can't remember a time when we didn't have at least one or two standout players and I haven't seen one since RD and VJ.

No offense taken. I'm just trying to see what progress they've made or can make. I agree VJ was an amazing athlete. But Kay Dalton was no fool either. He designed an offense around VJ which allowed him to make plays. It doesn't look like Downing has any idea what he wants to do with that offense. I'm pretty sure UNC has the smallest offensive line in the Big Sky. I've seen high school linemen bigger than them. They can't protect Waggener. They're fortunate to even have snagged him and then they get linemen that will only get him hurt. Downing has talent he just doesn't know how to use it. Quincy Wofford is probably the best defensive back on the team and he returned a kick 100 yards last year. After that we rarely heard of him on kick returns. He has also apperantly run in the 4.3s numerous times. Why not try him at wide reciever? There is a lot of potential that is not being utilized by Downing.

I see your point about no offensive lineman, but Dalton couldn't recruit them either. We should all admit and we've been over this a million times that recruiting tailed off when Marty English left for Wyoming. Dalton didn't put effort into recruiting and it was evident. Almost all of Downing's recruiting classes have been full of lineman. Size doesn't always mean better. Look at Jacob Thornbrue. Good player and probably our best lineman but he wasn't that good. Montana can find the big offensive lineman that are athletic. For some reason we can't find those guys. We need to find them. Big and athletic = very good lineman = very good QB

I've been saying that for awhile. As for linemen, the 2 recruits they just pick up seem to be decent, that dude from columbine and arizona, but we'll have to wait see how they pan out.

I know UNC was having a pro day also with him Saramento, Fauver and some RMAC guys. Maybe Chesla and Saramento can get into a training camp I know Asa Matthews did that last year but lasted about 10 minutes.
