UNC at #2 EWU Game Thread

Good game by the defense, and I'd say solid game from the offense. Yes West was off a bit, but he's young, that's gonna happen. EWU is 2-0 without VA, so far so good. Look out Lumberjacks, the Eagles are headed to Flagstaff!

Solid post. This kind of stuff is going to happen with a young QB and No Co's defense was actually pretty good. Some folks will find anything to complain about. 7-1!

Sometimes the pessimism on this board frustrates me. There is a difference between constructive criticism and outright "Debbie-downer" attitude. I am enjoying this season and will not let the few "Debbie-downers" on this board affect my optimism.

yeah, it was pretty obvious that UNC players all grew two inches, gained 15 lbs and took .5 secs off their forties at half time; hence the reason for the close game and breakdown on defense in the second half. It's one thing to be a fan and want the best for the program and another to close your eye's to a continuing issue. What would any who close their eyes see as "constructive"? Even the emotionally fragile on this board couldn't be termed "debbie downers" in most places; unless you just don't agree with their point of view and find it easier to use a negative label instead of paint a rational, logical argument to the contrary. Optimism isn't what I'd call this behavior. Should everyone be subject to a psychological review to make sure we all think alike? Dress alike? Yes, this sounds idiotic. Don't let that impact your own world view, just keep on keeping on, am sure someone, somewhere is picking up the tab.

About football. Good win. up and down results on both sides of the ball against a poor opponent on our home field IMO. Personally, I think it has taken a big toll on the team to have started the season so early despite the extra bye week. Started early but won't end early. That is a tough grind. Not sure if they can make it to the break between Montana and PSU without a conference loss, but think we have the talent to play sub-par and still get the win in most situations. Let's get everyone healthy and everything will work out. That sounds like optimism too me. Go Eags!

Geez, I guess I am just a dumbshit homer without enough rational and logical thought to continually and redundantly whine about our defense. Maybe college football has changed significantly and the days of old school dominant defense is gone. Maybe holding onto an old paradigm is a sign of mental weakness. I think when a team out scores another team, regardless of the score, they won. I will lose sleep the rest of the season because I am worried our defense is weak.

Nice. Had the makings of a rational conversation there. Won't lose any sleep over the self righteous prig's on this board who consider open discussion on a "sore" topic off limits because it offends their dumbshit homer sensibilities. Safe to say, we are all Eagle fans of one stripe or another. Go Eags!

Nailed it. Let us not (D)evolve into eGriz. :thumb:

This game reminded me of a horse race where the 2/5 favorite goes to the rail off the break and leads by a length into the turn. Despite pitiful fractions, the favorite holds the one length lead against a group of no-hopers the entire way to the wire for a win. It's a race that happens on every card in America and no one will remember it five minutes after it's over.

A pedestrian win of the highest order... Playing down to the level of competition but still doing enough things right to win somewhat comfortably.

I liked the front 7 contribution on D today. The secondary looked a little lost sometimes, though. The offense was just good enough today. NAU won a stinker in Portland and don't look much better than the teams we've been playing the last two weeks. Hopefully, the defense builds off this performance and someone finds a spark for this offense.

I hate to target a guy, but the entire seemed to be on point except for Jordan West. Just think, if VA was healthy, out team would be peaking in a terrific way. However, that's just the way things are in the FCS. It's how teams overcome adversity that makes this division interesting. Jordan West just needs more development. Hopefully he settles in soon.

On a pessimistic note, this can't be good for recruiting. I have a feeling that our electrifying offense has drawn in some visiting recruits. It has to be fun for a kid to watch EWU dominate on the red turf and think about the scholarship he has been offered here.

I hadn't seen a mod suggest anything is off-limits. Being oversensitive and offended about others criticizing your criticism and allowing your comments to devolve into name calling and cursing is a losing move. :ohno:

Stay strong, man!

Oh, and SE…shut up you douche!

Lot's of really good things going on yesterday, especially on Defense and Special Teams. That said, if being the best meant "good enough", most of our players would be playing somewhere else other than Eastern, and I think the coaches and players know better than anyone else that it probably wasn't as good an offensive performance as it could have been.

The good:

- Defensive line play was dominant. 7 sacks and constant pressure throughout the game. I felt kind of bad for their QB, honestly, because he really got battered yesterday.

- Offensive line continued to look pretty good. Moore ran hard.

- No turnovers against a defense that is first overall in the FCS INT's and second in TO margin.

- Special teams played great...nice to see we can kick a FG from 40+ yards, I think that could come into play later in the year. Good punting, punt, and kick coverage. Another blocked punt for a second week in a row...game changer.

- Anytime you draw a crowd of over 10k at Roos is good. I was hoping we'd get a little better student turnout, but won't complain too much.

The not so good:

- Penalties, still too many of them. How we continue get so many false starts at home is beyond me.

- We need to find a way to open up this offense some, but really, it boils down to getting the ball to our playmakers more often. The TD to Hill was awesome, but Kupp and Bourne aren't getting the ball enough in space.

yeah... you missed the sarcasm intended by using GE's own description of himself "dumbshit homer" and the fact I used a devolved style akin to schoolyard debates so often employed by those who seek to shut down discussion on this board. :-) Nice deflection with the "mods" thing, btw. Will try to maintain a sense of humor, maybe an investment in bacon bowls would help

Any comments on the football stuff? Are the players tired due to the early season start?

Golden Eagle Maybe college football has changed significantly and the days of old school dominant defense is gone.

I have often thought that, but then a net new recruiting class comes in and after watching the film and knowing that most of these players were stars on both sides of the ball, not sure the athleticism on D is less than the players on O. In the 90's, teams often took their best athlete's and put them on D. Seems that Eastern is pretty balanced on both sides of the ball.

As it pertains to Eastern, would you say that the athleticism on D is less than the O? Is Hoffman a better WR than a CB? Would Kupp be an improvement at DB for the team? Not sure that many of our Defensive players couldn't actually improve or add value to the offense side of the ball, but not sure that many of our offensive players would make the Defense better. Could be a push on this team overall. :geek:

What a great game day environment! The excitement of the special uniforms, lots of highly respected veterans, tailgating continues to get better and better, weather could not be better. If this was one of the first times at an Eastern game for a new fan they had to be impressed.
Fun game!!!
