Boyle: Thanks for your support, now keep it coming!
Editor's note: Below is an open letter to fans, written by Tad Boyle, Northern Colorado's head men's basketball coach.
Dear Bears fans,
I want to take a quick moment to thank all of you who have offered your amazing support and delivered great enthusiasm at our men’s basketball games already this season.
We’re in the midst of one of the best men’s basketball seasons ever at Northern Colorado, and I’m thrilled to be able to share this experience with all of you. I grew up in Greeley and have been a fan of the Bears for as long as I can remember, and the environment you are all helping create inside Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion is as good as it’s ever been. And that’s no accident. The great student support we have on campus, the volunteer pep-band members who have showed up to play during our games, and the amazing community outpouring we have received so far deserve as much of the credit for our great gameday atmosphere as our student-athletes do.
You all are helping to build one of the best home-court advantages in the Big Sky Conference -- we’re the only team in the league to be undefeated at home -- and I, my assistant coaches, and our players truly appreciate your support. It may sound cliché to say, but it’s true: We’re nothing without you guys.
Along those lines, I want to encourage all of you now to start getting to the gym as early as you can, beginning with our game Friday night against Sacramento State. We’ve expanded our seating capacity inside Butler-Hancock to accommodate as many fans as possible, but there still is a limit to the amount of student and community fans who can safely watch us play. Our success so far this season has created quite a buzz across town, and the demand to watch our team has shot through the roof. It’s possible that there will be times (as happened prior to our great home win against Colorado State) where we’ll have to close the doors and not allow any more fans inside. If you’re there early, this won’t affect you one bit.
Our doors open 90 minutes prior to each contest, and I’d love nothing more than to see a flood of fans pour into the seats as soon as that happens. This will ensure you a spot to each of our seven remaining regular-season home games (including two Altitude TV games at the end of this month and on Super Bowl Sunday) and create an intimidating environment for our visitors as soon as they step foot on our court. As a former player, I can tell you how much of a difference that can make.
Simply stated, you all, the fans of Northern Colorado, have a chance to play a serious role in the success of Northern Colorado men’s basketball this season and beyond, and we’re going to need every drop of energy you can spare. We’ve already had a lot of fun this year, but we still haven’t really accomplished anything yet. So, get you and your friends to the games early, make a ton of noise while you’re there, have a blast cheering us on, and let’s see where we can take this thing come March!
