Statistically, we match up well.

The defense is playing better, and there is no reason that we should not roll.

We gotta protect our home turf. That Southern Utah loss still is killing me.

I think if our defense keeps playing the way they've been playing, and the offense is clicking the way we know it can, we are a tough team to defeat. How good has Sluss and Shoemaker been these last couple of weeks?

It is so upsetting that we aren't at the top of the Big Sky right now. I feel like with the exception of the NAU game (and UW) we should have come away with the victory. UND, SUU, and Poly were all there for the taking. If we would have won those games, we'd be right there in the discussion for a conference championship. The BSC has been wild this year. Anyone can win any given week. There is no team that stands elite to the rest, which just makes it more frustrating because the conference is so wide open.

I think we should roll UNC this weekend, but their 10-12 Loss against NAU is making me think twice.

The defense is definately hitting on all cylinders. How many points has the defense scored in the last four games? What changes did Burton make when he took over? Is it a new defensive scheme or just different players?

I think the offense should score at least 35 this week and roll into Montana on a winning note.

The only things that come to mind is burning Rothstein's redshirt, Kincy being back, and Williams moving back to safety. Scheme wise, I don't think that there's been anything major, but there could be some minor tweeks that have been put in place.

Terrible play calls. Two TDs off the board on HORRIBLE calls. Mental errors. Bad coaching. Did I miss anything else? This game was by far the hardest one to sit through. 22 unanswered and 90 2nd half yards... Awful.

I'd like to add crappy special teams (blocked PAT (made up for with a two point conversion), and a UNC punt return that really changed momentum). Oh, and our freshman QB looked very freshman today.

This game should be reviewed by the Big Sky with regards to the officiating. They took two touchdowns off the board and altered the game. Not that this can be reversed, but if officials make a couple of terrible decisions that alter the outcome, they shouldn't be out there. Additionally, that totally missed that helmet to helmet hit on Carter on the east sideline (great catch and ability to hold on to the ball). That's why the rule is there, and the defender totally went helmet on helmet.

2nd half play calling was insanely bad.

I agree, the game should be reviewed. We got homered on our own field. Those points stay on the board, the momentum stays on our side. Our QB didn't look very comfortable back there today, but I don't think our play calling really put him in a position to get a rhythm and succeed.

No excuses. We play as if we're one of the three worst teams in the Big Sky this year...even with everyone back. Today, we looked flat. We are extremely inconsistent. And, yes, McDonough had a terrible day. The game was very disappointing.

And the terrible thing I realized today is: half of our best players are seniors this year. If our freshmen keep getting burned like this next year, we're going to be in for a LONG ride.

I'd say Kieran did OK today, but his receivers weren't helping in some cases. That dropped pass that ultimately lost the game? A drop. Monahan's TD catch? Pushed off. And what happened to our vaunted running game? They got shut down by a terrible, terrible defense. D.J. should have had a field day against those guys.

Kudos to UNC for playing us tough and never giving up. But we handed them the game in the second half.

The Bears have a "terrible, terrible defense"? What makes you think that?

The seniors are the ones who had the big penalties in this game. If we don't hit a QB that has obviously slid feet first on 4th down and 16 after he gave up on the play then UNC punts the ball but instead they keep the ball and score a TD. If we don't get a PI call at the 1 YD line, if we don't get a holding call, if if if if....but it just seems to me there were way to many penalties that didn't need to happen.

As far as our freshman QB. He didn't have a lot to work with yesterday. We had two TD's called back on questionable calls. We had a few dropped balls. He made a couple great passes that were flat out game changers that were dropped espeacially on the last drive to win the game. He looks like he is injured but giving it a go. He wasn't running like he normally does and never looked comfortable in the second half. It seemed to me when he cooled down at half time the injury became more pain ful and obvious.

My take at this point is we should play the younger guys and chalk this season up as a learning experience. Don't start turning on the team now. We played a lot of young talent this year and we have more to come next year. The learning curve from HS or from Redshirt FR isn't easy but we've had a few grow up under fire. Whelan, McDanough, Sibley, Rothstein, Nall, Carter all have had overall outstanding seasons and many more have played this year. While we might be saying goodbye to some outstanding seniors I think the next four years will be our team and our time to fill the stands.

Next season will roll around faster than we know and these kids will be a year older and experienced and this season will have left a bad taste in their mouth. I think we start to see the Nigel Burton team next year. All the kids on the team will be kids he recruited and they all come from winning programs and know this year was unacceptable and they will turn this thing along.

I believe Nigel Burton is also a winner and he is definately the right man for the job. get behind this team now because it's coming and you don't want to jump on the bandwagon late. Let's work over the next 9 months and find ways to fill the stands next year on opening day. Let's give this team a leg up next year when they open the season and let them know we are behind them.

The saddest thing I saw yesterday was the 15,000 empty seats in the stadium.

Question.

I could be wrong, but when we go with the 'tomcat' formation, McDonough typically comes off the field, right?

Seems that you could get him in motion as a blocking fullback and run the option with Carter and Adams or Richards. McDonough puts linebackers on their back when carrying the ball, I'm sure he could inflict the same damage without it.

All true!

But the game was still a big disappointment...to the players and coaches, too, I imagine. Three wins does not a good season make. Hope recruiting goes well. We need another class like last year.

It was a devastaing loss for the players and coaches and the fans. It was a game you just knew was in the bag after the dominating first half of the game. Then the things that kill a team happened. The punt return, the horrible phantom double pass call that clearly wasn't a double pass but a perfectly executed play for a touchdown.

Then the game changed on a dime and we couldn't move the ball for the life of us. We made several defensive stands only to go three and out over and over again.

Alls I'm saying is we might have been able to get over those humps with 20,000 screaming fans versus the 5,000 that sat there waiting for the shoe to drop and for us to lose.

We, as fans, need to adopt the "we will not lose a game attitude" along with the team. While this year will certainly not leave a good taste in anyone's mouth unless we finish by beating two top ten teams it will be a season of pain. Hopefully enough pain for our new recruits to bust their tails during the off season to not want to feel it again.

My belief is the character of the 28 freshman recruited last year and some of the sophmores and juniors is that they will not let this happen agin next year. They don't want to be a part of a losing program but want to be of bringing PSU back to prominenece in football.

So again I say the saddest thing I saw yesterday was the 15,000 empty seats. let's try and change that and let's open the season next year with a goal of working as fans to give these kids a decent home crowd to be their 12th man in times of needed energy on the field. let's all do anything we can to prepare and fill the stands next year while the guys do what they can to get better during the off season.

I think next year will be a big year for Portland state Football so let's get behind this team and do what we can from our side to fill the stands for them.

I had the same thought that they are losing a ton of talent at the end of the year. Marquis Jackson, Monahan, Nevin Lewis, Zach Brown, Kalua Noa, Bass, Sisler (already done), Sluss (and this is just the first guys that come to mind.

I guess losing seniors happens every year, but it doesn't make me as confident about next year as other people seem to be.

The linebackers we have are good but they certainly don't get back fast enough in short pass coverage. When you think of Daniel Halverson, Zach Whelan and some others I think they will be faster to the flat and the 10 yard deep drops than what we watch on the field now. Teams have really stopped trying to go deep on us ( safeties and corners ) and started dropping the ball in those 7 to 10 yard spots. Our LB's are great at the run stop but not so great at dropping back to cover the short passes or get into passing lanes.

Zach Brown Monahan and Lewis are big losses and I don't know who steps in to take their place yet but I think we will be just as good or better everywhere else on the field. That is my take on our situation.

I'm still wondering why you think UNC has a "terrible, terrible defense." Please explain why you think this.

I think one of my least favorite things this year was watching #11 from Northern Colorado taunting the few fans left in the west grandstand as the final minute ticked away. He was running up and down in front of the stands, laughing and pointing at the crowd for what seemed like forever. I guess they did just take over 9th place in the conference, so I guess that's worth taunting over.

As I mentioned on the Aggie and Hornet boards - there is no denying that the Big Sky refs SUCK. However, why didn't you play UC Davis like you played UNC - you were a playoff team at Davis.
