It will be interesting to see if other Big Sky teams try to start applying full court pressure on us after watching this tape. It's a good thing we got exposed earlier in the year rather than later. Point of emphasis in practice this week....

Glad we hung on to win, but man Coach needs to work on dealing with the press... that was ugly!

He mentioned that in the Post Game Show. He said he didn't have his guys prepared for it.

I am glad he mentioned that because it means it can be quickly fixed or at least improved. Of course if teams are pressing a lot it will mean we are up big a lot more than likely.

I am no bball expert but do know full and half court presses have been used for a long time. How can we be so unprepared? The team has been practicing for months in this season alone, has how to break a press not been considered?

Yes that comment boggles my mind as well. If you watched the Suck State game and this one what was the common theme of us cracking . . . . .anyone????...Yep not being able to handle the full court press! I am sure things will be different once Vois comes back as he would be great to have in the middle of that press to hit, but in the mean time they need to "prepare" for that . . . . . . as in their entire practices! :twocents:

OH one other thing....calling it GU vs. EWU in NCAA's . . .EWU pulls off the upset and Spokane burns to the ground because of all the upset GU fans :o  :crybaby:

Kyle needs time to feel comfortable with this offensive system - he has never played 4th fiddle before even in high school it was Tyler then him at JC he was the man!! They need to trust him and let him loose!! There's a beast in there being chained up!! Defensively he needs to grab more rebounds!! He knows what he needs to do just gotta put it into action aggressively and confidently!! Go Eagles!!

I honestly thought this was one of Kyle's better games he played in.

totally agree. Kyle has played well recently and should continue to see minutes.

Press defenses can be beaten with coordinated off ball movement and effective passing. When a team runs the press they are exposed on the back end to easy baskets. It takes a little practice/strategy to beat it and the offensive team needs to be calm and patient. If any of those things are not lined up, the pressing defense will force a lot of turnovers, which is why teams employ it when they are way behind.

Because of the risk of easy baskets on the back end, full court pressure is not used often, so teams don't generally spend a great deal of time working against it. Coach Hayford said he had a couple of freshman players that were not prepared for it, not the entire team. I doubt there are too many high school teams that can and do effectively run a press defense so its entirely possible those young players haven't seen it a lot. Unfortunately with a couple of players not working right it allows the press team to force lots of turnovers.

Sac State didn't use a full court press a lot, if at all, they doubled Tyler when he had the ball and forced him to dribble to his right which is more difficult for the lefty. They were able to do this a lot, not because Venky was out, rather because Drew Brandon only played 28 minutes because of foul trouble. Without Brandon, Harvey has to play PG a lot more and that allows the half court trapping to work against him.
