UND and UNCO

Well...big games this week. Gotta protect our home court to stay in contention. Also, we are currently on a 4 game losing streak to the fighting hawks. For some reason they play their absolute best basketball whenever they play the Cats. I think it is time to snap that streak and get a W against BJ and the hawks.

Gonna be two tough games for sure, both the Bears and Hawks are fairly good despite what their records indicate. Weber has played well during this 5 game winning streak but we need to keep it up. Like Tal said it's time to protect our house and end a skid against a solid opponent on Thursday.

Here's hoping for a good crowd and an active "destruction zone".

GO CATS.

These are big games, and they will be hard fought games. However, our guys have been getting it all together here lately and I'm confident that they can get the job done on our home floor. The first game will be the hardest, simply due to being the first game back after a road trip. Sometimes teams will relax a bit and get beat by someone that shouldn't beat them. I don't think that Randy or the guys will let that happen, but you never know. The other unknown is how the flu bug might impact the game, from either team. It's going around like wildfire right now.

The way to beat UND is to control their guards. Same can be said about UNCo. Lately, our guard line has been showing the ability to defend at a higher level than they were a month ago. I'm looking for a solid showing this week. :coffee:

That game turned out exactly like I thought it would. We came out flat in the first 10 minutes and had to dig deep and fight hard to get any sort of a rhythm. You have to hand it to UND, they are a scrappy bunch. We pulled it out at the end, but we played with them for far too long.

I believe that we will play better in Saturday's game. :coffee:

Just curious...doesn't anyone crash the offensive boards any more? 4 offensive rebounds aren't many. We did shoot well but I feel we need to create more 2nd chance points than we are. We shall see on Saturday. :-D

UND plays with a lot of speed, and they have very crafty guards. They kinda threw us off our game in the first half. You could tell that the boys settled down in the 2nd half. I too think that we will play better tomorrow. Gonna have to. UNC is no slouch and will be out for revenge.

Gotta say I enjoy the series we've have with UND. Im gonna miss it when they leave.

I was actually thinking about that last night as well. We try to get our inside game involved as much as we can, but we tend to shoot longer shots more and when we do we seem to have all but one player standing around the 3 point line. It might be a strategy of Rahe's to make sure the players get back to play defense faster but im not sure. A lot of Big Sky teams play fast offensively.

Chapman was so good last night. He was playing defense like a man possessed in the second half. With his quickness and length it was something to watch.

The Hawks did a real good job at denying the passing lanes out top often quickly doubling the ball. You look at their record and kind of scratch your head. But I don't imagine that Jones goes 8 for 9 from the field very often with that clothesline shot of his. They could play spoiler in the tournament as they have the talent.

Fun game to watch!

I think that there are two things involved in this. First is that Randy only wants 1 or 2 guys going to the offensive glass. He wants at least 3 back to stop any chance the other team may have at a fast break. It can be a good strategy when you have a good shooting team and solid defensive rebounding. The second thing is that we don't really have that quick, truly aggressive offensive rebounder, like a Joel Bolomboy. Yes, we have some adequate rebounders on the defensive side, but on the offensive side it takes a little more and we just don't have it in bunches. I would love for us to find another Joel, but guys like that don't grow on trees. :coffee:

tal,

i am not sure if there is anything we can do to stay in contention. we are basically the 2003 ewu eagles. alvin snow ain't gettin' us to 18-0. unc will be a good game on sat but griz...who is going to beat them? they need 3-4 losses out of the next 6 games to help us.

now that we are in the age of reno it only matters to get 3rd place. top 4 get the bye and 3rd wont face griz in semi.

I'm not saying that it will happen, it would a huge longshot, but we would need to win out and hope that some other team can knock off the Griz. We would both end up with 2 losses, share the title, and we would get the #1 seed in Reno.

The most likely thing to happen is we end up in 2nd place.

Even then, I wouldn't be too sure. During a very similar (and tough) final stretch of the season last year, we lost four straight. We still have to go to Portland State, Montana and Montana State, which are all tough places to play. We host two strong teams in EWU and Idaho. It's going to be a very tough finish to the regular season.

I don't expect us to lose on our home floor and those teams that have a chance of overtaking us, EWU and UI, only play us in Ogden. We need to play well on the road at PSU and Sac. If we do those things, then the road trip to Montana won't be as critical. :coffee:

We.......are........cold.

Down 10 at the half, hope that bogus 5 second call fires this team up. Randy was furious. Refs deserved to get booed off the court

I like how in the 2nd half Randy kept yelling 5 seconds and holding up his hand and pointing to it

Ugly game, hopefully this was a wakeup call for the team and they play better heading out on the road. Both us and the Griz struggled tonight. Griz beat Sac by 2 in OT.

This is the time of year when even the bad teams are starting to get it together and everybody is showing signs of fatigue. Anything can happen from here on out. It's the teams who dig deep, work through it, and continue to get better that prevail in the end. Remember when it looked like PSU was going to run away with it?

As far as the refs go, we have had some very interesting refs lately. They are not BSC refs anymore. They are hired and managed by the consortium of western conferences. There have been some problem refs, but overall the officiating has been good. :yikes:  :shocking: :coffee:

Just to set the record straight B2BPG, I blame you for NoCol's 19 offensive boards last night. Had you not tempted fate by posting this. Had you just kept this query to yourself, the Cats might have had a normal effort -- and I might have been able to relax last night instead of embarrassing myself in front of friends and family by screaming at referees.

9 of those offensive boards came from UNC's guard line. Their PG, Davis, had a bunch of them. In that game, we were not boxing out well at all. In rebounding, checking off needs to be a complete, team thing. One or two guys not doing it can hurt you. Two or three guys not doing it will lose you a lot of games. We were fortunate to do just enough on D to win that game and UNC was stupid to foul Harding with 5 seconds left in regulation. :coffee:

Guards gotta rebound. Braxton and Chapman were having to protect the rim on the drives by Spight and Davis and this leaves them out of place for the defensive rebound. Rahe said as much in the pre-game.
I thought Richardson did a great job on Spight. Spight put up 41 on Mont St and 32 just a couple of weeks ago. Last night he was 5-22. Some of that was from Braxton and Chapman helping out down low, but near the end of the game and in OT UNCO was trying to force a switch to get Harding on Spight instead of Richardson. I think Richardson's length bothered Spight on his perimeter shooting.
