UND Game Thread

I figured I'd start a thread with my first post.

How do you guys feel about this weeks game? Most UND fans are worried about being able to stop your passing attack (Kaufman) and contain your QB when he runs. Our team didn't give itself a chance last week by spotting Poly 14 quick and easy points so I hope this week is different.

I suspect your coaches are planning run, run, and run some more on Eastern. I saw you guys running a lot of read option against Portland State, right? If you do that well, you should have ample opportunity to pull the upset.

Frankly, I don't feel very good about this game. :|

FWIW, I think we can score a lot of points on your defense. And I suspect we will. Unfortunately, after last week's complete defensive meltdown, I feel like we can't stop anyone.

We do like 3-4 read options a game since our backup QB (who has started the last 4 games) runs like a WR. I'd expect power run game out of pro sets and lots of spread with our WRs who are the best position group on our team.

Strange that you don't feel very good about this game because the feeling is mutual on our side. For some reason we've been worse against the run than the pass so we'll see if that still holds true with your offense. Expect a very pissed off UND team coming to the Inferno on Sat. Unfortunately pissed doesn't guarantee a thing.

Which will be worse? Our pass rush or your run defense? I wouldn't be shocked if we got torched but I also wouldn't be surprised if we pound the rock and run the clock down. Very intriguing matchups of strength vs weakness.

Our defense against the run was pretty sketchy in the UM game so if you have a good performance on the ground you can expect to move the ball pretty well.

If UND does poorly in the pass rush department you can expect the Eagles to put up big numbers in the air.

Welcome, geaux. I registered over at SiouxSports, but still haven't been approved to post yet. Can you get someone on that? Thanks.

I sent a message to the mods. They take their sweet time sometimes, it took a few days for me to get approved when I registered so who knows when they'll do it...

sooooo...... how's your special teams?

After witnessing that onside kick executed to perfection despite the new, increasingly difficult rules... pretty special.

I have a feeling at least 65-70 points will be scored in this game though. Should be highly entertaining for those that enjoy offense.

First off...when the schedule was announced, i was pretty jacked to see we had UND at home this year. I don't believe we have ever played you guys so it should be entertaining.

I'll be the first to admit, I don't know much about your team. It seems you are pretty balanced with your run/pass and you score a lot of points. It also seems like your defense gives up a lot of points. Could be a shootout.

How is your QB, I know you had a pretty good transfer from North Carolina but he broke his leg. Something like 6'5 220 ish??? Replaced by a younger, more mobile QB when your starter went down? Heard the transfer may be back for the EWU game, but not sure if any of this is true.

Our defense will need to try and stop your running attack. Hopefully we will have our linebackers back from injury (2 of them didn't play against the Griz). You have a beast of an o-line, maybe bigger then Montana's. I'd imagine we will try to take advantage of you guys through the air and you will try to take advantage of us on the ground.

Should be a good game, looking forward to it. Welcome to the Big Sky.

Our backup QB is actually a 5th year senior. He has, until late last year, had major maturity issues despite his unreal talent. I hope that Hanson is back for this game because he is the best QB I've ever seen at UND. He's not mobile but he's so accurate and reads defenses so well that he doesn't need to be. Our offense is pretty good (great at times) now but with him under center could be unreal. One problem is that our best Olineman has yet to play this year after complications with off-season ankle surgery and our second best Olineman broke his thumb against Sac St. We need at least one of them back, if we ever end up with both back our Oline will go from decent to excellent.

The red turf is already in their heads; they're practicing on a maroon/brown gym floor to simulate the turf.

The real reason they're inside is because we got a bunch of snow today and the field isn't usable since the snow is basically straight out of a slushy machine instead of nice and fluffy

It's a little out of the ordinary, we didn't get it til after Christmas last year. I've had winter start in Sept when I was a kid so it could always be worse.

North Dakota (3-2, 1-1) at No. 7 Eastern Washington Eagles (3-1, 2-0), 8:05 p.m.

Series record: First meeting

Last meeting: None

What to know: The No. 7-ranked Eastern Washington Eagles picked up a huge win last week at home versus Montana. It looks like coach Beau Baldwin will use redshirt freshman Vernon Adams moving forward under center.

It certainly wasn't the prettiest of wins - EWU gave up 407 rushing yards - but Adams played great when it counted. The Eagles scored two touchdowns in the final 2:19, aided by a successful onside kick, while Adams found receivers Brandon Kaufman for a 30-yard strike and Ashton Clark for a 20-yard score, which proved to be the difference.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools, and it seems the key to the game for North Dakota will be defending the pass. UND is ranked No. 28 in the FCS in rush defense, allowing 191 yards per game, and Eastern Washington has struggled to get anything going on the ground for most of the season.

North Dakota is coming off its second loss of the year, falling to a good Cal Poly squad last week, 35-17 at home. The offense, which averages 40 points per game, scored a season-low 17, as four turnovers, a blocked field goal and a snuffed fake punt were causes for the defeat. UND led early in the fourth quarter, 17-14, but fell apart.

Quarterback Marcus Hendrickson has been solid after filling in for injured starter, Braden Hanson, in Week 2. He ranks 10th in FCS and second in the Big Sky in total offense (286 yards per game), with 1,246 yards passing and 183 yards on the ground. Hendrickson is also eighth in the FCS in passing efficiency, completing 58 percent of his passes for 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

Expect Eastern's Kaufman to extend his 100-yard receiving streak to six straight contests - having already hauled in 24 catches for 559 yards and five touchdowns - because the Eagles shouldn't have much success find any running lanes. UND will try to get off to a fast start and also has a talented weapon for Hendrickson to play catch with in Greg Hardin (24 receptions, 495 yards, seven touchdowns).

EWU has been a perfect 15-of-15 in the red zone this season, scoring eight touchdowns and seven field goals. That could be the key in this game.

Prediction: Eastern Washington 35, North Dakota 33

Last Week's Record: 20-5 (.800)

Season Record: 85-22 (.794)
