We've got the second best team in the league coming in. They have played well lately. They got us in a close one up on the frozen tundra. Now we get them at our place. This should be a good game.

In guarding the other teams hot guard last night, Jeremy got a taste of what it may be like guarding Hooker. Hopefully, that helped prepare us to face UNDs guard line. Their guys had big games against us up there. I'm hoping that the third day at altitude may be getting to them a little bit. Studies have shown that the third day is the worst for athletes competing at a significantly higher altitude. We will see.

I don't expect our shooters to have two bad games in a row. At least, it hasn't happened this year. Still, I look for us to pound the ball inside as much as we can. The ball just needs to go in the hoop. :coffee:

Your physiology classes must not have gone very good for you olds....would love to see your "studies".........https://sites.psu.edu/siowfa15/2015/10/06/how-does-elevation-affect-sport-performance/ this report says that teams try to come to the high altitude areas earlier in order to addapt...nothing about 3 days...it just doesn't make sense that it would take your body 3 days to notice that there was less oxygen in each breath...I know that when I drove to the top of Pikes Peak it only took me 3 steps to realize there was less oxygen, not 3 days....

I've read several of those studies and what you are saying is true, but it takes more than the 4th day to start seeing adjustment to the altitude. One study I read tried to quantify the difference in performance over a weeks time. The conclusions were that the first day was the best performance followed by the second and then the third. The 4th day showed a bit of improvement, but the most significant improvement came after that. There were other studies that I read at the time, some had differing results.

My own experience, going from 5,000 feet up to 10,000 feet, camping out for several days, and then hiking 9 miles up to 12,000 feet, I can tell you that the worst days for me were days 2 and 3. The 9 mile hike was not that hard on the 5th day. Day one was a 16 mile hike with a 60lb pack. It wasn't that hard either.

I'm not going to argue any more...but, Saturday should be Dakota's 4th day at altitude if they travel on Wednesday as most teams do...

http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/acclimatization-to-altitude.html
This is a fairly good article on the subject and the clipped section below talks about the timing of things.

Preparing for Competition at Altitude

How can athletes who live at sea level prepare for a competition at altitude?
One approach is to compete within 24 hours of arrival at altitude. Not much acclimatization will have taken place but most of the classical symptoms of altitude sickness will not have had time to manifest. After the intial 24 hours, dehydration and sleep disturbances become more prominent.

An alternative option is to train at a higher altitude for at least 2 weeks prior to competition. Although full acclimatization to altitude takes 4 to 6 weeks, many of the physiological adaptations occur in the first 2 weeks and the more severe disturbancs should have settled. It is important to remember that during the intial days at altitude work capacity is reduced, so athletes should train at 60-70% of sea level VO2 max and build up gradually over 10-14 days.

A third approach is to devote a greater percentage of training time at sea level to endurance training several weeks prior to competition. This is a strategy often adopted within many team sports, helping to raise players' VO2 max to a peak so that they can perform at a lower relative intensity without significant loss in performance.

Sleeping in altitude tents and hypobaric chambers may be able to adequately simulate the effects of altitude but these tend to be very expensive. Unfortunately, there is no evidence to suggest that spending 1-2 hours per day breathing hypobaric gases at sea level results in the same adaptations as living at altitude.

Can altitude training improve sea level performance? See the altitude training article for more details.

Weber due to play well....UND ripe for an off day
I sure hope you're right. This is the start of the gauntlet for us, as all five remaining games come against the top five teams in the Big Sky (subtracting us, of course). It goes without saying that tonight is a must-win, especially with us hitting the road against tough EWU and Idaho teams next week. We need that 1.5-game cushion over North Dakota.

UND needs to leave a parting gift for the Big Sky: all revenue sports championships for the next two years for us. Both fb and vb have won so far and mbb and wbb on are track. All those teams are dominated by underclassmen, including mens basketball.

This team is playing better than any DI team in UND history. Hooker and Crandall are their usual playmakers, but the 3 pts shooting has been unreal and the front court, including 7ft Shanks, have been asserting themselves. Seals and Baldwin are really stepping up from the outside. Like the odds in RENO with this team.

Thought I would add the real reason that UND is leaving. There are reports that the Big Ten will offer us a spot in their hockey conference so they go to eight in that sport with Notre Dame. That will be huge for UND academically. Before, we wanted western FBS teams like Ariz St, UNLV, Utah, and Colorado to start varsity hockey, so the Big Sky was necessary for UND to be western focused. The Big Ten offers now changes everything and our President likely knew it last summer. Now we need to be Midwest focused.

All those guys aside, I don't want our guys to sleep on Bernstine. He cleans the glass better than any of our bigs, and we've struggled to defend the paint over the past few weeks. Shanks has been largely ineffective offensively against us over the past four matchups.

Shanks was unreal against Idaho. A double double in limited time. His shot blocking could have given him a triple double if he played longer. Really like the play of Avants too. Even the front cout passing has been approaching Hooker and Crandall's levels.

Shanks has been a noticeably different player lately who is playing with much more confidence, which he was sorely lacking in the past. Utah St may be sorry now that they gave up on him. Hooker and Shanks were good buddies on the Minneapolis AAU team, so Hooker got him to UND.

Dream on ...BSC will be tougher top to bottom next season...this year is do or die for UND Basketball

Crandall does a lot of the pt duty, and he is only a sophomore. We have aa Creighton transfer sitting on the bench for next year, who is a friends and former teammate of Seals and was more highly rated than anyone on the team. Also, have a stellar three pts shooter from ND who is coming in. Hooker, Baldwin and some bench warmers are all we'll lose. If Jones doesn't win this year, we'll get a new coach.

other teams have higher rated recruits and D1 transfers coming in... as well as more returning production
I agree with you completely, scout.

The only teams that seem to be headed south are NAU, Sac, and PSU. The teams that seem to return about the same as this year are UI, UND and MSU. Unless Hall decides to leave. Everyone else in the BSC seems to be bringing in more talent than they have this year. Sometimes you will have a kid who develops fast over a summer, but usually you can see that coming.

The BSC looks to be much stronger next year, top to bottom. :coffee:

Out played in about every way imagine able. No team play, too much one on one. Discombobulated on offense. Just not a good game by Weber tonight.

Credit to North Dakota. They played their hearts out and wanted it more.

Back to the road now

Forgot to mention UND's defense. Since we got blown out by Portland St the first week of the conference season, this team has made steady improvements. It's almost like an assistant coach has stepped up and is doing most of the coaching now as this doesn't look like a Jones team of the past.

The only thing that concerns me is its hard to beat a team three times, and I know in Reno Weber will hit more 3pt shots. Crandall and Bernstine out in the first half with foul problems allowed Weber to get ahead. With those guys back, we made a deep run that couldn't be recovered from.

Good luck in Reno. Hopefully, we will sweep the revenue sports championships. It was a good day for UND, except not so good in hockey.

I couldn't agree more. They simply acted tougher than our guys. Way too many turnovers and careless passing. Unless we shoot a higher percentage from downtown, rarely will we overcome such sloppy play on offense. We also came out flat in the second half and seemingly couldn't get a stop for about an 8-minute stretch.

First time posting on this forum. Big Weber State fan and was at the game tonight. I thought Rahe did a poor job on the rotation tonight and seemed to admit that in a round about way in his post game interview. He said they were wearing out and are losing their legs and ND had much more energy in the 2nd half because of that. He said he saw it coming and noticed it in shoot around. If that is the case why was his rotation only 8 players tonight? The ball was not moving and it seemed the offense was non existent. Really was frustrated Cannon didn't see any time. I know he has struggled this season but seems to be turning a corner lately but Rahe has such a short leash for him. He had a great freshman year and can bring valuable minutes. Harding looks like he can be a an elite offensive player someday. Poor free throw shooting and rebounding were killers tonight as well. Weber better figure something out if they want to win the tournament. Really concerned but hoping they turn things around soon. I have really enjoyed all of the Weber posts!

I could go on and on breaking this game down but all I can say is that it looked like tonight was the first time we ever played together. It was really hard to watch. I can't understand how there was so much on the line with reg season championship and BSC Tourney seeding, that the Cats couldn"t play better. Maybe it was just that The North Dax executed their game plan a lot better and made us look bad.
I was VERRRRY disappointed with the level of play tonight.
