"What is known as America’s most popular sport is now a rare commodity in the California State University system.

In the past two decades, the CSU system has experienced a drastic decline of its football programs. Of the 23 schools in the system, seven have football, including Sacramento State......"

Was this even discussed at the administration level recently? Or is this just a misleading headline?

They'll be prying the Causeway Classic Cup out of Dr. Gonzalez cold, dead hands before football ever leaves Sac State. We finally have a president who gets it. Its never been discussed and is simply a "stir the pot" article.

^ Its good to know your administration is comitted to football, given how cali schools seem to think destroying inter-collegiate football is some sort of holy crusade...

Welcome Farm!

I agree, even if you are an aggie. It is important to preserve collegiate football in California as many programs have been dropped over the last two decades.

Thanks for the welcome. I didn't know you hornets could use computers ;). Now we just have to make sure some Dr. Hutchins* wanna-be doesn't take over Davis.

*The president of the University of Chicago who cut its big-time football program (along with generally mis-managing the place). To put it in perspective, imagine USC dropping football and de-emphisizing athletics.

Good point, Farm. Incidentally, while I'm not sure of the details, I think at least the threat of that may have been behind Amos Alonzo Stagg's move from Chicago to what was then called COP (now UOP). Man, it's amazing how long that guy stayed in coaching. Twenty or thirty years in Chicago, ten or fifteen at UOP, and several more as an assistant to his son at Stockton College (now San Joaquin Delta College) following his retirement from UOP. He was well into his 90s when he was done. Outside of JoePa, who has the wherewithal (not to mention university support) to do that?
