UNLV Recap

Ok, so the game got away from the Hornet in the second half. Unfortunately the inability to generate any offensive consistancy domed Sac St. For anyone that saw the game, was there anything we can take from the game that will give us hope for next week, or the remainder of the season?

What about the defense, any positives?

Dailey is a beast, we're going to be fine Offensively against Big Sky competition. I'm drooling just thinking about the Hilliard/Dailey combination for the next two years...

Kadeezy, how did the new LB corps look to you? I know by listening to the broadcast that DL did fairly well considering their size and speed and the secondary did its best? The defense is still the unit I am trying to figure out.

I was there at the game, and I too thought the dline did an admirable job, but the linebackers were no where to be found to plug the gaps against the run. Six, 7 and 8 yards a whack on first down too many times last night to be successful. The corners also had a tough game, but Gordon played very well. I think the announcer was getting tired annoucing him as the tackler!! Let's learn, move on, and beat Poly this coming Sat. Go Hornets!!

A win against an FBS opponent is unlikely and is not good representation of the entire season. For us it's a money game and for them an almost guaranteed win to start the season. However, this week we will get some clarity as to how our season may go. Cal Poly will be a good test to see how our program is progressing.

Go get em hornets!!

first off, unlv was a better team with better talent, period.

but our first offensive series looked like a group of scared high schoolers in a freshman game...underthrown passes, dropped ones. 3 and punt.

d gordon had way too many tackles, 8-10 yards down the field.

play calling was just purely unimaginative - simply look to unlv's offense. i honestly didn't know what they were going to run or throw every single down (i even tried a few jaeger bombs and i still couldn't figure out what they were going to do...)

as for sac, we'd get a little running going, a few first downs, try to throw a pass, run, punt. run run run punt. when we would get the running going, we didn't work off of that success - no play action, no passing ability, no points on the board, nothing. and to tell you the truth, we were damn lucky to get the field goal with the wind.

as far as dailey, he's ok, not the next barry sanders. while he got some yards, there were several times where he'd take his sweet time getting to the outside, then when he'd try to turn it upfield, he'd have everyone and their brother coming up to greet him. to me, i won't drool over how many talented backs we have or how many yards they'll gain, i want points on the board. and with unimaginative play calling and not playing off of our limited running success, i don't think we'll see many points, or W's.

but man, it was nice to be drinking beer and watching college football outside!

I agree with most of what you said in this post, however, its pretty hard to criticize Dailey considering he had 101 yards in 19 carries. He's a helluva back who should be the starter next week. We need to establish the run to set up play action. We did it once and Brandyn Reed caught a long pass.

I think we will learn a lot from this game and play better going forward. At least, I sure hope so,

The LBs appeared to be the weak link given it was their first game. They were either not getting off blocks or It seems like they flowed with the misdirection UNLV gave them and perhaps didn't stay with their assignments which again might just come from lack of experience at this level. They will improve fast after they get in the film room this week in my opinion.

HHD:

yer right, dailey is a good back, not taking anything away from him. but we could have dailey, payton, sanders, emmitt smith and jim brown and it wouldn't matter if the play callers cannot spin off additional play action plays on the talent of our running game.

i would argue dailey had the yards he did BECAUSE our play calling stunk, just stunk. when hornet fans around me are yelling "throw the f-ing ball, where's the play action, mix it up, etc.", maybe someone else should be calling the plays.

that ONE successful play action pass was absolutely meaningless. TWENTY of them could have put us in the endzone a few times and given the hornets (and the play caller) some confidence going into the season. probably not a win, but some confidence and the ability to get into an offensive groove and know what it means to move the ball down the field and into the endzone.

i was impressed with the backfield setup that unlv had. quarterback in shotgun, back nearby, with another guy cruising by in motion. when the qb got the ball, i had problems myself who he faked to, gave the ball to, and next thing he's rolling out into a bootleg to throw a 15 yarder to his tight end. wow, offensive imagination. yeah they had some good talent, but there is no reason our offense cannot show that same imagination.

and what was doubly disappointing was that it was only 10-3 at half. was the play caller was also the one who gave the boys the halftime speech?

That was definitely me. :P

good for you!

there was this hornet fan (a blonde plus size woman) who was going ape sheet during the whole game, just cracking me up, leading cheers, standing up and rallying people. very spirited.

and speaking of spirit, what's with our band? why do they even bother to travel, and then play like 4 songs the entire game? the rebel band who was on the opposite side of the stadium was louder, and i was sitting 50' from our own band.

can we use our band's travel budget for more schollies?

The Blonde + size gal is one of the players mom on the Oline. You can count on her to provide energy at every game. The team next week should fair better but will fall short and go 0-2.
Cal Poly 41 Sac St 24.

She is definitely not a mother of an O-lineman. She was in the band when she was a student so she knows all the quirky band cheers and what not.
And we definitely don’t lose to cal poly. I think they have too many question marks on offense to score 41 points.
I do like the theory that Sperbeck was holding back. It did come across my mind at one point; however I just don’t know why he would hold back with the game at 10-3 midway through the 3rd quarter. At that point you open it up and go for the upset. But enough about the UNLV game, it’s time to focus on knocking off cal poly on the road.

If we're thinking of the same blonde woman, she ain't a O-lineman's momma!

Haven't posted too much on this game because I think everyone's getting a little carried away and looking too much into this game. Yes, I was there. Yes, I was about 10 man sodas deep, but I didn't have a problem with what I saw.

We proved that we can run the ball. We found out that our LBs are going to have some trouble this year. We have a solid line (O and D). Deonte Gordon and Co. made way too many tackles, but did a great job of picking up the D. Sure we didn't air it out or run a lot of intricate plays, but why do that when you're down big on the road to a superior opponent. I was fine with Sperbeck trying to control the clock and the ball. Jason Smith isn't exactly John Elway and our WRs weren't going to miraculously start running circles around the MUCH more athletic UNLV secondary.

I think you'll see 20 or so pass attempts from Smith this weekend and the Hornets will make a game of it, but fall short in the end.

My guess why every one is so especially sour about the UNLV game is that we were expecting more. The score reflected the same result we would have had with Mooshiagian coaching against UNLV. That represents no growth under the new 'Savior' regime.

Maybe so, another reason is the CSU game last year... This UNLV team is a much more talented team than the CSU squad from last year (even though the rams had a couple NFL caliber offensive studs).

Careful now, hungmustang (this guy is obviously trying to compensate for something ;) ) might start ranting about how cal poly ALMOST beat Wisconsin last year. Key words here are ALMOST and LAST YEAR. :geek:
