Vandal Fans Say Montana Isn’t Their Rival

Is it really considered a rivalry if Idaho hasn't beaten Montana since the last century? It's been a while since Idaho beat EWU for that matter.

UM is our #1 rival. They deserve to have that title. They have earned our respect and we have earned theirs. We had a great thing going with them until the BSC f*****d it all up. These Spuds have zero respect for EWU or UM. They still think WSU is one of their top “rivalries”... UI is an afterthought to the Cougs. They haven’t beaten WSU in 20 years. BSU and WSU would both mop the floor with Idaho nowadays. They are lucky to have even landed a protected rivalry with them dropping down. Any of their dillusional fans that claims that they have a superior program than EWU is about to have a rude awakening. We just beat WSU two seasons ago. We are a perennial FCS powerhouse. We will get to stomp on them year in and year out now. They’ll need to get real comfortable with being a middle-pack FCS team for the next few years while their program joins the ranks of our division. I hate the Griz, but I do respect the hell out of them. I hope that they beat the vandals down just as hard as we will... just like we did last time we played them in the Kibbie Dome. Welcome back to the Big Sky - hope that you can play a few games before your dumpster fire institution drops the football program. FTG FTV

Couldn't have said it better myself. And that comes from a U of I grad and native Idahoan. Idaho lost all semblence of credibility in the late70's! Love this Eastern football program! You are the Big Red of the FCS! So glad to be a Eagle Fan!!!

All the that said... I am glad to have them back and the vast majority of the fans that have stuck around through this transition are great people. I look forward to cracking beers with those folks! They just need to enjoy where they are now and make the best of it. When they come down from their high horse, it will be a good protected “rivalry”. :thumb:

Agreed 100%. The "Protected Rivalry" of 2 teams was ok when there was only 9 teams in the conference, although I always considered MSU a 2nd rival not Portland St. Now with 13 teams that "Protection" should be expanded to three or four teams. I can't speak for other institutions, but I want to see EWU beat Montana, Montana State, & Idaho every season without exception.

Also, Idaho needs to make the best of this transition. THEY NEVER FIT IN FBS! Their facilities were never up to FBS standards at ~25k or better, & they were never *really* accepted/wanted in any FBS conference. Idaho's football success may have had Vandal fans wanting to move to FBS with Boise State, however, the university itself wasn't ready to put up the 30 million or so to make the Kibbie Dome an FBS facility.

The problem for Eastern is that Portland State feels like such a contrived rivalry. I attend every game Eastern plays in Portland, and without fail, the Eastern people outnumber the PSU people, often by a healthy margin. Clearly, Portland State doesn't consider it a rivalry either.

Idaho doesn't consider Montana a rivalry largely because they're experiencing extreme butt-hurt over being moved back to FCS. I don't know that Idaho is any more of a rival to Eastern than Montana. It's been two decades since Idaho really had any rivalry to speak of, as that was around the time Boise State left them in the dust.

I for one hope that EWU & UM kick the holy hell out of Idaho EVERY time they play them.

Do they realize that they are 57-154 in the last 17 seasons and only have 2 winning seasons? I knew they were bad but crap THEY SUCKED!!!

Its been a while since The spuds played EWU or UM or but 0-6 in the last 18 years.
2003 EWU Wins 8-5
2013 EWU wins 20-3

2000 Montana Wins 45–38
2001 Montana Wins 33–27
2002 Montana Wins 38–31
2003 Montana Wins 41–28

The funny thing is Idaho may actually be better this season than they've been in a while. I don't think the drop to FCS will hurt their actual on-field product.

IMO, next to the Cougar game our most difficult game before the playoffs

I think there's a strong possibility idaho ends up better than they were as a fbs team. I lost count of the number of really good players that chose EWU/UM/MSU over idaho. Main reason is most players at this level are use to winning. Players looked at idaho's record and thought that five years of getting the crap beat out of you(and living in Moscow) overrode the ego trip of playing at the fbs level. idaho will be directly be competing for the same players that EWU/UM/MSU and if they have a winning record and a good/likeable coach they can build that program, perhaps at our expense. I think it's good they are back and we'll bring a shitload of fans there as will UM/MSU.
*I personally don't care for the vandal fan.

From the mid-80s to when Idaho left FCS (I-AA) the rivalry for IU was Boise State #1 and EWU #2.

For EWU, Idaho was THE Rivalry, not Montana.

Griz catches a break this year as they just face Idaho. in 2019 they play both Idaho and EWU.

Very true. Prior to Idaho's departure from the Big Sky, they were the team to beat for Eagle fans. Montana to a lesser extent.

Indiana University was a rival of Boise State and Eastern?

Idaho was kryptonite to Eastern back then, and they won the lion's share of those games. Interestingly, Eastern was faring pretty well against Montana in that same era. It's hard to remember, and the young guys on this board never experienced it, but Idaho was a real powerhouse in the late 80s and early 90s.

New to this board. I’ve always respected the hell out of the Eagles, always hate losing to them, but it’s impressive how good they’ve been year in and year out. I root for them in the playoffs to represent the Big Sky well.

Hope the Cats will be back up in the conversation for the top of the conference here this year and beyond.

Anyway, this thread got my attention. Not going to lie, I found it funny that Idaho fans brought this up. Some Idaho fans are a little butt hurt about the fact they’re back in the Big Sky and some definitely think they’re above all of this and that they’ll instantly dominate the Big Sky just because they’re dropping down from FBS. I’d love for the rest of the Big Sky to beat up on them this year to bring them back down to reality a little bit, everyone except the Griz. I’d love to see Idaho go 4-7 or something along those lines this year with a nice dominant home win over the Griz.

[/Good luck Eagles as they strive to once again own the Sky, and compete for the Naty!!!

Interesting Idaho factoid, in the new millennium, Idaho has only one win against a major conference team, and that happened in 2000 vs Washington State. Despite playing 1-3 games per year against Power 5 teams (and you could even include Western region powers BYU and Boise State- neither of whom they've beaten since 2000), they have only one win. They really have no credibility when thinking they are a legit FBS program. There are a lot of FCS program with far better records against top programs than them.

Incidentally, in that 18 season span, they only had a couple of games that were inside of a 10 point spread. Most were total blowouts, including several 50+ point blowouts. WSU blasted them tin their last bowl season, 56-6 two weeks after Eastern went into Pullman and beat them.
