Very Early Season Predictions

I know we just finished spring drills, but we pretty much know what team we're going to have. With the exception of Jace Davis, who's eligibility is up in the air, we know what players we will have. We know what kind of offense and defense we have. I'm bored, so here we go.

Sept. 3rd. Lindonwood - Tossup. I know they're a transitioning NAIA school, but they're really good. They lit up their opponents by scoring 70 to 90 points in some of their games. They do lose their record setting QB to graduation, but I think it's going to be a tough game for either team. Also, the Bears might be looking past these guys and looking forward to the game against CSU.

Sept 10th. @ CSU. L. I think we will give them a game and our guys will be ready to prove to the CSU coaches they were over looked. CSU isn't that good and they've struggled against previous Big Sky teams in past seasons.

Sept 17th. @ ISU. W. The Bungals are the doormat for a few more years. Kramer is a good coach, but he doesn't have the horses yet.

Sept 24th. WSU W/L I would love to say a certain win, but it's always crazy against BBQ university. I'll say a toss-up.

OCT 1. Montana L Nothing would be better then upsetting the Griz, but they're simply awesome at home.

OCT 8th. Sac State. L. For some reason we've always struggled against the Hornets.

OCT 15th.@ Eastern Washington. L. The Eagles are champs and even though we had a great chance to beat them last season, we're going to struggle against them this year.

OCT 22nd. @ Montana State. L. I think MSU will win the conference this year. They're loaded.

OCT 29th. North Dakota. W. The Sioux have been inconsistent since they moved up. I see our win here.

NOV 5th @ NAU. L. Not at the Jacks level yet.

NOV 12th. PSU - W. The program has dropped a little there, but they've also had the top recruiting classes in the conference the past couple years. This one will be close, but Bears pull it out.

Once again I see a 3-4 win season. The only reason I say this is that I assumed Jace WON"T get his crap together and get his grades up. Let's assume he won't be out there. IF he does, then I could see us winning a couple more games. He's that good. Also, the other reason I don't see much an improvement is with our gimmick offense. I'm not impressed with what coach Armour is doing. He doesn't have the experience Peterson had and I think we will see a drop down in our scoring. Plus, our offensive line looked horrible...again. On the positive side, I do see an improvement on defense. Especially along the D-line. Marcus Felker who coach wants to lose 30 pounds should be the x-factor. We've got Holmes, Felker, Herndon. That's quit a load any offense can handle. The LB's are a big ? Secondary will be solid.

Here's my take based just on the players we have right now (not including any of the incoming freshmen or JC transfers).

Game 1 Lindenwood: I agree with your assessment here "Tossup". They're a top 10 NAIA program who's moving to the NCAA (not sure what division). They had an outstanding record last year but lost in the first round of the NAIA playoffs. Their linemen are huge; most over 300 lbs and their football facilities look top notch.
I don't believe Coach Collins will let this team look past Lindenwood and the Bears should go into the game with a healthy dose of respect for this opponent. One thing that should be in the Bears favor is that it's a home game.

Game 2 CSU: I think this game will also be a "Tossup". With the talent the Bears have they can be in this game at the end and maybe even pull off an upset. Should be a great atmosphere with the two schools being so close in proximity. Don't forget that Weber St. should have won this game a couple seasons ago and we've played well against Weber.

Game 3 ISU: We should beat this team again "W". The Bears are more talented but the game is at ISU in their old dome with a terrible playing surface.

Game 4 WSU: Put me down for the "W" in this one. The Bears have been too close for too long not to take this one at home. Plus, I believe that Cameron Higgins (one of the best QB's in the conference) is gone.

Game 5 Montana: Would agree with the "L" for this one. The new coaching staff will have their metal tested and is going to realize what it takes to win at this level in the Big Sky.

Game 6 SAC State: We can beat these guys at home "W". It was a long trip to Sacramento last season and the Bears were totally not prepared to play this game. It didn't help that Orms was not available and special teams were pretty poor as they were in several games last season. IMO, this is the primary area that needs to be much improved this season.

To shorten things up a bit, I think the Bears win the remaining games except for Eastern Washington. By the way, the Montana State game is a home game this year.

My "pie in the sky" prediction is 8 Wins / 3 losses. My realistic prediction is 6 Wins / 5 losses.

My fear with the Lindonwood game is what happened against Chadron a couple years ago. Honestly looking at their games, they scare me a lot. Putting up 70-90 points against their opponents. I know it's just NAIA, but I think I don't think a lot of FCS teams could have done that. This was a huge mistake to schedule this game and I had hoped Hinrichs learned his lesson from Chadron, but apparently not. It would have been great to have a BYE heading into Fort Collins. The Chadron lose was huge and I think it put the program back an entire year. The same could happen against Lindonwood.

I guess I am a bit more optimistic than some but I really think we will be 6 & 5 if not a bit better. The key will be beating Lindonwood decisively. If we lose that game you can pretty much kiss the season goodbye because no one is going to care about the CSU game or show up at Notty. Sorry Beardown but don't agree with you on the new offense. I think you will see an exciting offense!!

I don't know why you're still hooked on Peterson, the guy was brought in to do one thing and that was put more Ws in the win column. Which obviously didn't happen, I mean yeah the offense might have improved a little bit under him, but there were still a couple games where the offense looked like crap and plus some questionable play calling.

I'll agree I'm not a big fan of the offense that Armour is bringing in, but I think that's because we saw a similar offense like that, that was ran horribly for years. But with that said I think this offense is the best for the team right now, because the passing game is our strength on offense.

As for the Lindonwood game, I too, think it's a big game for coach Collins and UNC. I don't see UNC losing though. The UNC team that lost to Chadron St. was horrible, and this UNC team is definitely not that bad.

I liked what Peterson brought UNC. We went from averaging 11 points for about 4 seasons to averaging something like 25 points. That's a huge difference AND he was working with a poor offensive line. But, he's the OC at Tulsa now and we need to move on. I think the only thing that will be positive about our offense is having John Boyer as QB coach. He was our last all-conference QB when he played here. He knows what's going on.

Beardown, you don't score 25 points per game with a poor offensive line. The reality of the situation was that a number of the starting o-linemen were injured during the season. The problem is, and probably always will be, depth on the o-line.

They were horrible at pass protection. This year they look even worse.

You are aware that 3 starters from last year didn't play in the Spring Game? McGraw (grad), Shapiro (inj) & Gumbs (inj). There were also 3 RS FR that played in that game, so they're still just learning it all...

No excuses! 12 sacks during the spring game is NEVER okay.

I hardly think tapping the Quarterback on the shoulder counts as a full sack. In the first scrimmage when the quarterbacks had the same rules i think the defense had sacks somewhere in the upper teens low twenties but the next week when the QB's were live and the defense recorded only about 4 or 5 sacks and that was with 100+ plays.

All I can judge is from what I saw in spring drills. I didn't see any improvement from the offensive line.

It's difficult to improve when you don't have an offensive line coach who's only job is to coach the offensive line. You've probably noticed during games that the offensive line coach is over at the bench coaching the o-line. Since coach Armour is both the offensive coordinator and the o-line coach, I don't know how he's going to be able to do both jobs effectively. So Beardown, you need to back off your criticism of the o-line a bit and realize that they are doing their best with limited coaching. IMO, skimping in this area is not a good idea especially in this conference.

That's true and it's too bad. I'm having flash backs to the Darnell era when he was OC and o-line coach. Same type of offense, etc. That's why we all need to increase our donations to the Blue and Gold club and QB Club. Once Armour is fired, we can get someone like Peterson again.

Petersen Schmeetersen, if you like Peterson so much you might want to move to Tulsa !! Laugh, dammit!! Looks like Darnells offense?? Maybe, but this one looks like it might actually work. I know it was just spring ball but Looks a lot better to me. You are really one pessimistic guy, Beardown. I don't think you will make it to fall !!

I'm not pessimistic but just realistic that we need to be better funded and get better coaches before we win in this league. You can point to Eastern Washington and say they're not much better funded and maybe lesser facilities but they ARE better funded.
