Vikings - Timbers Alliance

I went to the Portland Timbers game tonight. There were 15,000 plus fans there. Great crowd and the Timbers win 1-0. It would be natural to get those fans attending PSU games. They love the game atmosphere and they don't want to let the party stop. What can we do to get these fans seemlessly attending PSU games?

BTW... the win brings the Timbers back to being a point behind Seattle at the top of the league.

It really hurt to see a couple of my phone messages last night talk about the crowd size, while I'm freaking stuck in the outback that is Idaho. Ack!

Also, the convention "soccer" (a misnomer in itself, 'cause worldwide leagues in EVERY sport use the other format) uses is first division, second division, and so on, with promotion and relegation between divisions. The American leagues use the "division" terminology, but there's no pro or rel.

Let's see, did anyone hear about the "shirt off their backs" promotion? Were there that many Byron Alvarez fans (four-year Timber, now with Charleston)? Last Thirsty Thursday? Last regular season home game? Decent weather? Or do there just happen to be a lot of "football" fans in town that might be convinced now that they don't have to wait for MLS to come to have a good time? It might have happened for all the little reasons, and I obviously can't give good answers from 400 miles away. All I know... playoff game at home in the September 13 to 16 time frame, probably the 16th.

15,833 actually

We usually get 5-8k. I am not sure what happened last eve.

And, drop the "minor league" crap.
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. What is it then? I assume it's not 'A' league if that's more PC.

Jokes aside, I watched Byron walk off the pitch last night.
It appeared that no one said a word to him. He kept his head down.
He stopped just before leaving the stadium and took a look around.
A ball girl then waved excitedly his way. He gave a little wave back and hit the showers.

My eyes popped when I saw the attendance reported in the O this morning. Would love to get even a few of those folks to a Vikings contest. How about a cross promotion where a paid ticket stub from one event gets you free admission to the other?

I don't suppose many of you were around when the original Timbers played here. We drew a regular 15,000 - 20,000, week after week. "Soccer", by the way, is called football everywhere else in the world except in the United States. We're the odd one out. The closest is maybe Australia, with their Australian Rules football. Sorry; we're parochial.

But I've gone to PSU football for the last forty years, and don't intend to stop now!

I was around for the original Timbers. Loved them then, love them now.

If we could get the Timbers' fans to cross over for PSU football, it would be a big help. Timbers fans have great support. I think the Timbers' fans would want to keep their camraderie going after the end of the soccer season.

What would naturally motivate Timbers World-Football (i.e. Soccer) fans to attend PSU American-Football university games?

One thing would probably be an alliance---the goal of remaking PGE Park into an exclusive Football/Soccer stadium, and that would imply promotion of a Portland MLB team and new baseball stadium and the selling of our AAA club to someone like Boise. We could also become co-sponsors of one another.

Second might be that the Timbers fans can show us PSU fans a thing or two about what it means to support a team by rocking the house. /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily16.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily39.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily16.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily39.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily16.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily39.gif /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily16.gif

We can mold our college football crowd to include elements of a soccer-style crowd complete with flag waving, banners and crowd chants. In others words, they can work to bring a bit of the culture of the world's game to the American game of college football in Portland. Imagine how unique that would be in the eyes of the NCAA and the media. Portland State would have a unique identity, to say the least.

Third might be how the summer soccer season dovetails with the autumn football season, and that is a good way to keep the party going on. You have the party at the same place, but now you've changed bands and they've attracted in a whole new set of people to join in. Time for another microbrew to ring in the new session. /users/31/07/37/smiles/595146.gif

They probably like to drink and I know they like to yell and have fun. And that's exactly what JG wants us to do. And who knows how to do it better in Portland than the Timbers' Army? SEE Timbers' Army Tribute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuJDHP5dpYo

Was the 15K game for the timbers on a thirsty Thursday. Because one of the higher attendence figures in the last 3 or 4 years for PSU was a Texas AM Kingsville (D2) game was over 10k only because it is on a thirsty thursday. People love sports and cheap beer. Think of the possibilities if PSU was able to convince PGE to do a cheap beer night for a vik game.

Im glad that the Timbers are seeing some success in attendence, hopefully they are playing that Glanville and Mouse commercial on the Big Screen during those games.

I think the game on thursday, september 02, 2004 against Western State was considered a 'thristy thursday', but it didn't result in a big crowd.

You advertise PSU football like they have been doing this summer, bring in a decent non-conference program, and play the game in early September and you're looking at a huge crowd.

I dunno. Soccer's a different game with a different crowd. The Timbers are a professional team and clearly represent Portland, Rose City. Does PSU represent Portland, Rose City? Can we build Rose City into our PR somehow? It might pull in some of those Timbers fans. Though cheap beer would help.

In order to do that we need to emphasize the PORTLAND in Portland State!!! That includes emphasizing that ALL Portland State athletics are in fact the CITY OF PORTLAND athletics ant the student athletes are the city's premier representatives and ambassadors.
