volleyball 2013

Time to pay attention to volleyball. We started the conference season Saturday, taking out Sac State in three sets. We go again tonight. Question: why isn't Wheeler playing? She was by far our best player last year. Is she still hurting from that injury? Having a hard time getting back in the groove? Sorry to see this. Patton et al seem to be taking up the slack just fine though. Will that be enough to see us through conference? Glad to see our blocking is up. Go Viks!

We were picked first in conference for this season, and it's beginning to show. We're first and second in all categories in the conference, and now stand 4-0 for first, tied with North Dakota. My worries about wheeler turn out to be nothing; she played this weekend and got a pile of kills, hitting over 400. We don't have one player scoring 17-18 kills - we have three with 8-12 kills. A very deep team, and it will show as we move further into conference. Schlatter is the linch pin feeding balls all over the court as she has since her freshman year. Hard to imagine us playing without her. And Clark just keeps digging, leading conference in digs as she did last year. This is turning out to be one of those vintage teams that you talk about years later.

We were picked also first in soccer. This with a team made up mostly of freshmen and sophomores, yet. But look at us - 2-0 in conference and in first place! We're mostly football fans here, but I urge that you take in a volleyball game or two; it'll ease the pain of the football game. :D

More on volleyball - when I say deep, I mean three talented hitters instead of one. Most teams have just one hitter they go to time after time. Because of the pressure, that hitter will usually get 15-18 but hit only .100 - .200 percentage. Our team this year has three talented hitters. Example: against North Dakota, Mitchell, Corrado and Wheeler each put down 12 hits with .300-.400 percentages each. That means the opposing team can't gang up on the one hitter; Schlatter can set to any of three players.

The only thing I can see lacking in this team is a solid front line of blockers. Our two or three will do fine against conference, but come NCAA Regionals and the Pac-12 and their tall blockers......

Another good weekend for the women. Volleyball split on the road, losing to Northern Arizona in 3 and taking Southern Utah in 3. We'll have to take NAU at home, and probably can. The real troublemaker is turning out to be North Dakota, which has yet to lose. They focus on blocking, with several 6' players. Be interesting to see how we play them. And oh yes, the soccer team took another one and remains in first place.
In volleyball, freshman Hughes is beginning to see more time - she had 5 digs tonight. And transfer Miyoshima is being used (sparingly) for serves - she had an ace. Wheeler, Mitchell and Corrado shared out the kills with Wheeler getting 13. Spreading it around seems to work, though it didn't against NAU. I hope this means we're getting used to games on the road. We have a couple more to attend to before a return to Stott.

We beat Montana in soccer today. Montana seems to have football and nothing else. Well, maybe basketball. :x

The women are putting together a string against Eastern Washington, revving up for the Dam Cup. If all the women's teams beat Eastern Washington we'll win the Dam Cup, though that's generally not the case. Women's basketball isn't predictable this year. Same thing for the men.

The volleyball team did it again, taking UNC in four tough sets in Greeley. To give you some idea, the first set went up to 31-29 - it normally is 25 or 26 to something. Our top hitters went 13,13, and 12, a good indication of the balance we've got. Schlatter, always good for double-doubles, tonight almost got a triple double, with 7 kills (rare for a setter). After a match like that it'll be hard not to let down, but we can't afford to as we move on to Fargo and North Dakota Sunday. We're in second place now, one match behind UND. They've come out of nowhere this year, and are presently undefeated. That match could very well decide the championship.

Seems like the PSU women are the bright spot in the athletic program. Most the women's teams over the past few years have been pretty successful. Already this new school year, they are producing good results in golf, soccer, softball, cross country and of course volleyball. Good job Lady Vikings. Hope the men's teams follows suit.

'We really only have two men's sports"???? We have more than 2 men's programs or are saying that we have only two men's programs that are successful?

Spectacular match against UND today! We lost 3-2, after coming back from 2 down. The 5th set was 18-16 - usually when you get to the last set of 5 the winning score is 15. Good example of perfectly matched teams. This was the third day of long travel (UNC and UND) on the road, I'm really proud of our team for doing so well. I thought it might come to this. UND has got some tough road games ahead, out of the comfortable confines of their gym. |We can hope they'll drop a couple of those. We'll certainly beat them when they come to Portland.

So the second half of the season begins, ten matches to play. We stand in second, one match behind UND. The second half should favor us, in terms of home and away. We have only one, maybe two matches away that should be difficult. UND, on the other hand, has three or four. Example: UND lost for the first time last night at Flagstaff, 0-3. It's a tight conference this year, with four teams separated by only two matches - UND, PSU, NAU and ISU. It's early, but we have a good chance to take first. We now lead as a team or as individuals in nearly every conference statistical category. And at the end of the season, we play UND - in Stott.

We swept SUU tonight as expected, maintaining our hold on second place. Seems unlikely that we'll catch up with UND - they have two matches on us. They could lose two, but it seems unlikely. They still have to play us at the Stott, which we should win, but that's only one. Still, strange things happen at the end of the volleyball season.
Patton as usual this year led the kills with 18 or so, though Wheeler, Hataja and Mitchell came through with only a few less. I have a hard time understanding the push for service aces. We had 10 tonight, which looks very good - until you consider that we also had 10 service errors. Where's the advantage?

We took NAU tonight 3-1 - one piece of the playoff puzzle. The match of the season will be Thursday, against UND, presently one match ahead of us. If we beat them we'll be tied, and if we both win out as seems likely, we'll end up tied for first. I have NO idea how they'll figure out who wins conference if that's the case!

Whew. We beat UND tonight 3-2. It was 3-2 in Fargo last month, but that time we were on the losing side. These are VERY closely matched teams! Tonight UND took the first game, we took the next two, they took the fourth and we took the fifth. As usual our kills were scattered between Mitchell, Patton,
Wheeler and Corrado. Schlatter handed out the usual 39 assists, Clark her digs. Also as usual, we had 9 service aces (UND had 2). Blocks were about even (O'Brian and Hatajja). What a team!

We're now tied for first with UND, and will probably remain so to the end after the last 3-4 matches. We'll have a bye in the tournament, which will be held at PSU this year. Saturday is our last home match - last chance to see Schlatter, Wheeler and Patton play. Lets pack the house!

Hope you make the Saturday match, Dusty. UNC's no push-over. And they're fighting Sac State and Montana for a place at the tournament - they won't go down easy.
I like that the freshmen - Hughes and Miyoshiro - are playing some, even in the tough matches like last night. They'll need the experience. We're losing a pile of players to graduation. It'll be interesting to see how recruiting goes this year.

My despondence over football was lifted tonight by our volleyball champions as they blew past UNC 3-0. A fitting Seniors Night. Two more matches and then the tournament. If we win out we'll be No. 1 seed - apparently we have the edge over UND. We can now start thinking about a return to the NCAA Regionals. Go Viks!

Just noticed --- we're up to 86 RPI nationally. That's got to be one of the highest rankings we've ever had. Well over any other Big Sky team. This weekend we should take Weber State easily. ISU will be more of a challenge; they're one of the teams that have made the tournament.
