FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- For the third year in a row the Northern Colorado Bears are Big Sky Conference volleyball champions.
The Bears, who won the league's postseason title in 2009 and shared its 2010 regular-season title, finished off their bid Saturday night for a first outright regular-season league crown with a 3-1 win against Northern Arizona at Rolle Activity Center.
Set scores were 25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19.
That, paired with last week's news that Northern Colorado (20-8, 13-3 Big Sky) will host next year's Big Sky Conference Volleyball Championship, should have the Bears and all their fans excited for what the future figures to hold.
Northern Colorado will look to stamp its second trip to the NCAA Tournament next weekend, when it will take the No. 1 seed into the Big Sky Conference Championship in Portland, Ore., and face fourth-seed Eastern Washington at 8:30 (MT) in the second semifinal at Portland State's Peter W. Stott Center.
The Bears did most of their damage Saturday with Tambre Haddock and Andrea Spaustat, a pair of true freshman, leading the way against NAU (15-10, 6-10). Haddock finished with 15 kills and nine digs, while Spaustat, the Big Sky Conference's leader in hitting percentage (.353), added 14 kills on .357 hitting and also had six blocks.
Junior Kelley Arnold backed them and perhaps sealed her first Big Sky MVP award with another double-double (her 12th of the season) with 11 kills, 15 digs and five blocks.
Senior Amanda Arterburn had 23 digs, giving her double-digit digs in 27 straight matches, and junior Marissa Hughes added 49 assists and 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.
