PORTLAND, Ore. – Garyn Schlatter finished one dig shy of a triple-double and four Portland State players recorded double-figures in kills as the Vikings picked up a 3-1 victory over Montana on Friday night at the Stott Center.
Set scores were 25-15, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23.
PSU finished the night hitting .243 on their way to improving to 14-8 overall and 9-2 in the Big Sky. They remain one-half game back of first-place Northern Colorado (9-1) in the conference standings.
The Vikings opened up an 8-2 lead early in the match as Montana's offense faltered. The Grizzlies committed five-straight attack errors after Portland State led 3-2, prompting a timeout by Head Coach Jerry Wagner.
Montana was able to get within three on several occasions, the last at 14-11, but the Viks slowly pulled away from there. Whitney Phillips keyed the closing run with four kills and the Grizzlies continued to struggle with four more bad swings.
After committing 11 errors and hitting -.026 in the first set, Montana bounced back with only four errors and a .343 mark in taking the second stanza. Portland State had it at set point, 24-22, but the Grizzlies scored the final four points to squeak out the victory.
The Viks trailed early in each of the last two sets, but eventually took over on their way to winning both of the frames.
"I think our serving really kept us ahead of Montana. We served accurate and tough," said Vikings Head Coach Michael Seemann. "We got great contributions from our bench and especially from Aubrey (Mitchell).
"Ultimately it was our defense and our conversion swings that kept us in the match."
Mitchell was one of the four Vikings in double-figures, tallying a career-high 10 while also setting a new career-best with a .533 hitting percentage.
Phillips led all players with 21 kills, her fourth-straight match going over the 20-kill mark.
Also for PSU, Megan Ellis added 12 kills, while Schlatter racked up 32 assists, 11 kills and nine digs and also hit .333. Dominika Kristinikova added her third double-double of the year with 15 digs and 14 assists.
Montana (10-11, 6-4 Big Sky) received 16 kills and five block assists from all-conference middle blocker Jaimie Thibeault, and 12 kills and 12 digs from Amy Roberts. Libero Brittney Brown led all players with 18 digs.
