Voting Day...

Today is the day when the NCAA votes on the "Power 5" Conferences "requests" on changing the basic structure of the NCAA to meet the times of today.

USA Today has an excellent primer on what this is all about and what can be expected:

What I didn't realize is that some of the smaller FBS Conferences have already pledged to start giving "full scholarships" including the Mountain West. It will be interesting to see if they can actually afford to do so.

Nice article...explains some of the land mines the "biggies" have to be careful with. I think the biggest obstacle the big schools will have is their own greed. I'm sure the smaller voting schools are going to want to make sure that they have some financial incentives coming their way in exchange for agreeing to the plan. I guess we'll see soon enough...

Done and done:

An eventful two days for the NCAA. First they grant the power conference more autonomy, Friday the judge rules against them in the O'Bannon case although she limits the amount of money an athlete can be paid for their likeness to 25,000 over five years:

This is one if the more bizarre rulings I've ever seen. The judge ruled the NCAA was violating anti-trust law by not allowing schools to compete over athletes and by "fixing" the amount of compensation they can receive. She then turned around and set a limit on the amount they can pay them, thereby also "fixing" the amount of compensation. Totally contradictory logic. Will be interesting to see how this plays out on appeal.

Brad:

Not speaking for the judge nor do I play one of TV but there is another case pending by a very high profile attorney representing 30 or so athletes coming up. It's possible Claudia Wilkins, the judge in the O'Bannon case knows this and that, that trial / decision would be the definitive result. Her decision might just be a temporary solution for the next year or so.

I agree it doesn't make a lot of sense but then most legal situations don't.

As Lester Munson wrote in the link I provided, the athletes at the very least are going to get something out of this when their images, names ect are being used by organizations to make money.

Don't think this will have an impact on ISU or the Big Sky teams though.

Brad:

This story may help answer your question about why the judge did what she did:
