vs. Idaho

Both teams need a win. EWU has a better defense and special teams. Idaho probably has a better offense.

Yeah, I’m not so sure Eastern has a better anything. That said, it does appear Idaho has hit a bad run of form. So we’re lucky to be catching them at the moment. Talent-wise, they’re a lot better (when healthy). They must have stunk out the joint in their game today.

It's insane how much of a difference just a few years makes in terms of talent. I still remember beating Idaho something like 70-20 back in 2021 or 2022.

It will be interesting to see if Joshua Wood plays for Idaho. They are a much better team with him. Idaho's defense is bad, they don't have two solid corners so teams pick on whoever they roll out there.
I'm more interested in who our QB will be. Taylor was not suited against Portland but will have two weeks to heal up from whatever's been going on with him. I can't stand watching the two-QB stuff, it doesn't work. I think Best just needs to pick a QB, and at this point in the season I think that's Bell.

Even if Wood doesn't play, their backup looked pretty decent to my eyes. More of a pure pocket-passer which probably doesn't bode well for our depleted secondary, unless we get some guys like Wells back this week. I think he's only played in one game so far.

Having bad CBs might be a problem against most teams, but Eastern hasn't shown coherence throwing the ball. Bell gives us a little more in that department than Taylor, but neither guy picks apart a secondary. I think Eastern has a chance at home against a struggling Idaho team, but Idaho looks bigger, stronger, and faster than Eastern.

Agreed, and our strengths don't seem to play into their weaknesses and vise versa.

EWU
Passing: 174 ypg
Rushing: 180 ypg
Pass Defense: 306 ypg
Rush Defense: 195 ypg

Idaho
Passing: 194 ypg
Rushing: 187 ypg
Pass Defense: 236 ypg
Rush Defense: 142 ypg

Idaho's secondary looked like Swiss Cheese in the UNC game, especially in the first half. But I just don't know if we have enough weapons to exploit that against them. I expect us to try to lean on them, and that's going to difficult because I think their front 7 is pretty darn good. We're going to have to take shots and receivers are going to have to get open.

Bell gave up three turnovers to Portland State. If they were a competent team they would have won.

Outside of WIlliams (and Cronquist on occasion), our receivers simply don't get open.
These are fair points, but let's not act like our pass protection hasn't been god awful. The reason Bell's running around as much as he does is because he almost never has a clean pocket to throw from. Giving the QB more time in the pocket equates to receivers getting open and more completions. Ok, he turns the ball over too much, but one of his TO's against Portland State was due to him getting blind-sided in the back because of a completely missed block by the right tackle. They need to protect him better.

I don't mean this as a slight at all because I think he's doing a fine job and clearly our best option at QB right now, but is Bell able to see over the O line without rolling out? I mean, I think he's even shorter than Vernon Adams is. Serious question.
