vs. Idaho

Not sure I agree with some of the comments here. It’s clear the offense needs much improvement and I’d really like to see us get back to being Eastern Washington on offense. That said, their backup Qb wasn’t as bad as some of you suggest. Give some credit to the D, they maintained our lead the entire game and put us in a position to win the game.

Idaho isn’t great, no. But winning games like this are important for things like recruiting, etc.

I believe we play Weber next week and have a chance to go to 3-1 in the conference. Based on what I have seen of Weber, I think we have a shot of winning that game.

Idaho was screwed all over the field. They had a few dudes, but a lot of guys that were tragically flawed. And they tried 3 different QBs, so it wasn’t like one guy had a bad game. Frankly, I have no idea what their coaching staff was doing. They had no ideas, no plan, nothing to hang their hat on. I have no idea what kind of game they intended to play, but it felt like they were just throwing things against a wall hoping something would stick. And yet they made it a game until the wire.
Either way, Best got a ranked win. 10 year extension.

Winning ugly is still winning!

Idaho reminds me of some of those old Portland State teams that used to give us fits even when we were good. They’d be ridiculously bad but have 3 or 4 great players. You’d always wonder how the hell they wound up at Portland State.

Idaho seemed like that tonight. I have no idea how, at 2-4, they were ranked. They weren’t good at all. Everyone can complain about Best - often with good reason - but Idaho’s staff did a horrible job. Eastern gift wrapped that game with that muffed punt and assorted drops. Yet they gave it right back to us.

The defense did what they had to. Idaho didn’t have a blocking scheme that could manage a blitz. We stuck with pressure because Idaho had no blocking concept to deal with it.

I don't think anyone on here is saying that Eastern is any good this year just because we've beaten a few bad teams. I will say that this team played a much more competent game tonight than it did probably all season, especially the defense. Maybe Idaho wins with their starting Qb in the game, maybe not. It'd be hard for me to imagine that their defense would be magnitudes better with a different Qb, but sure, maybe. I thought the defense played a pretty good game. They held Elisha Cummings who was supposed to be their great RB to 10 yards on 8 carries. He did nothing.

It was puzzling. They wanted to run the same inside running plays over and over again even though they were getting stuffed almost every time.

And BTW, Fuck Idaho, pp

the defense deserves to thump their chest tonight. I thought Idaho was atrocious on offense, but they still had to get the job done, and they did. Idaho’s offensive coaches ought to hang their heads in shame. It was obvious Eastern wanted to bring one extra man upfield in pressure and they never figured out how to deal with it. They were disrupted all game long. When you find success with a strategy, might as well keep doing it until the offense adapts. They never adapted. When plan A works, no need for plan B.

It seems like Best and company out-coached someone for a change. I'm wondering how much HC experience the Idaho coach has. I know he ran an academy on the west side of the state for a long while (which coincidentally has not been good for EWU in recruiting), but...just wondering about how much experience he has at this level.

I'm actually not that confident we'll beat Weber but anything's possible. They smashed PSU tonight by 3 or 4 TD's.

You're thinking of this brother, Tracy Ford. But yeah, the point still stands. Tons of kids from the state of Washington - mostly from along the I-5 corridor - on the Vandals roster, many of which should have been kept in state and playing at Eastern. Idaho's resurgence has hurt Eastern in recruiting in immeasurable ways. That wasn't really the case when Perino was the HC or when they were still playing in the Sun Belt.

In terms of his HC experience - none. He's mostly been a positions coach.

Man this WIN feels good ...take it every time. Players felt it and played hard and for that I thank them!
