vs Portland State

The BSC leading Hornets (15-6, 9-1 BSC) have a Jekyll and Hyde Portland State (11-9, 5-5 BSC) team coming into the Nest this Saturday. They’ve done everything from win close, win big, lose close, and lose big in BSC play. No telling which Viking team will show up but they always play the Hornets tough so I am expecting them to bring their “A” game.

PSU has good balance with solid guard play and some size in the front court that at times has looked very good. Senior guard Wiggins (15.6 ppg) leads the way and is surrounded by a solid supporting cast of fellow guard Winston (12.1 ppg, 3.8 apg) and forwards Tucker (11.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Bamba (10.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg). If the Vikes can get things going then I think the Hornets will be in trouble. Hopefully a jam packed Nest will make things tougher on them.

I agree that Portland is a tale of two teams. I believe we can beat either team they show up with but will need a real good effort if their "A" team shows. We will have to hit the boards a bit harder than usual as they have a couple guys who can really get going if they are allowed to get some easy put-backs. Of course if all else fails, we have what no other team has....Mikh McKinney....I don't think he will allow the Hornets to lose at home this year. What a pleasure it has been watching him and Dylan for the last few years. This will be the last game I will be able to attend until the post season, so someone take my place as the loudest mouth in the Nest. We need everyone to stay behind this team all the way.

Congrats on the win.

10-1 in the Big Sky.

16-6 overall.

Congrats on winning 16 games in Div I history for the first time.
Congrats on being 10-1 in the Big Sky.
Congrats on selling out Hornet Gym for the 3rd game in a row. Will be great someday to see all the people who wanted to get in having a place to sit down someday. And give it up to those Hornet fans who are coming out to stand the entire game...that is a true fan.
Congrats on showing that people are interested in backing a winning Sac State program and it does not matter if we have anything in common with the other schools in our conference like the Big Sky. Just win and contend all season and they will come.
And congrats to old Hornet Gym who is getting tons of press this year on its 60th birthday.

And congrats again to an amazing Hornet basketball team that is getting it done and doing what is needed to win and represent their fine university so well!!

Go Hornets!!

64-60 Hornet win. Great electric crowd tonight, student section was phenomenal. They stood almost the entire game and with Wanless gone, they were never asked to sit down.

Hornets had a great 1st half and had a 9 point lead at the half...then PSU came out firing on all cylinders and evened things out early in the 2nd. Just as I feared PSU's forwards had a solid game. Tucker and Bamba were huge for them (18 and 13 pts respectively). I am amazed at how the Hornets fight. PSU did a fairly decent job containing McKinney and Garrity early in the 2nd and the Hornet bench came though huge. Mills and Tiffin had some huge buckets (8 and 7 pts respectively) to keep the Hornets in the game when PSU had all the mo. Hornets were able to hang on in the end even with some struggles at the stripe. McKinney uncharacteristically struggled in clutch time but PSU couldn't take advantage. Garrity iced the game from the stripe in the closing seconds. Great Hornet defense in the final minute as PSU had the ball when down 2. Hell of a game.

This is hands down the best team in Hornet history. There were some good times a decade ago but this team has surpassed them. Huge win, great time to be a Hornet fan. My only concern is McKinney. He looked a little banged up near the end and his minutes are starting to mount up. :|

Looks like we got both good and bad Portland teams this afternoon. First half we shot the ball ok and PSU didn't. Second half the exact opposite, PSU shot better and we still shot just ok. We did defend well enough to get the win but could of rebounded better. All in all it was a mediocre performance by the Hornets. This year we have the experience to win the close games that we used to lose. I like our chances in close games with our back court. We definitely have to pick it up and play much better next week at EWU. GO HORNETS!!!!!

Had to listen to the game with the Big Sky TV feed freezing up again every few seconds and the crowd was indeed big time. Sounded like a college basketball game was going on. loving that. Great job indeed by the students. Glad to hear that they stood up the entire game, seats or no seats. That is what you want at a college bb game. The crowd looked just as big if not bigger than the Montana game but about 300 less today. Guess the fire marshal indeed got word at what was happening in Hornet Gym and kept the numbers down. Was thinking that it would be nice to install (yes spend some money) on roll away permanent bleachers in back of the west basket where everyone is standing now. Seems like that would be feasible and not that expensive as a stop gap until we ever get a new arena. Be nice to see Hornet Gym somehow grow back to the 1,800 -2,000 capacity that it used to hold. Well at least install some roll away bleachers behind the west basket to squeeze in a few hundred more fans and allow them to sit instead of stand. Remember Gonzo granting some money as he retires for a new Hornet Gym lobby. How bout using some of that money for some more bleacher seats. Just thinking out loud...a new arena if of course the best way to spend the money/any money that becomes available. Hope that allusive fundraising campaign for a new arena gets going short of some huge individual or corporate wind fall. Maybe Mayor KJ, who was in attendance today, has some ideas to build an arena for his city's university.

Roll on Hornets and keep doing what it takes to move forward week by week during this amazing season

A lot of Hornet shots went in and out to start the 2nd half. It was a very resilient performance yesterday.

With 5 of 7 of the remaining games on the road, the Hornets are going to have to keep grinding these games out.

@ Portland State

The Hornets (18-8, 12-3 BSC) head to Portland State (14-11, 8-7 BSC) for a lone game this Saturday. The Hornets are chasing the regular season crown and pretty much need to win out to bring it home. PSU has all but punched their ticket to the BSCT but can do no better than 4th place (and they would need NAU to fall apart to do that).

The Hornets controlled the Vikings for most of the game in their first meeting, but the Vikings did make things interesting late in the game. This time the Vikings are looking to return the favor as they are coming into the game on a 3 game winning streak. This should be another close game as PSU has a solid front court and some capable shooters.

After this afternoon's game we are definitely in the drivers seat. Need some big time leadership from Mikh and Dylan. Nick, Eric, Cody, Alex, Zach and Dreon need to have solid games without too many turnovers. Isn't it great having Sac St. play such a meaningful game this late in the season?? The Griz faithful are already predicting the tournament being in Missoula. Come on Hornets, bring the regular season title and tournament back to Sac Town. KEEP THE SHEEP IN MONTANA SAFE!!!!!

12 first half turnovers for PSU is allowing the Hornets to take a 31 to 27 lead, but the Hornets aren't playing very well offensively; very inconsistent. Could have a ten point lead if we had it together.
Anyone's game as it stands now.

73 to 60 Hornet win; two big ones to go! Garrity and Mills really got us going in the 2nd half and then, McKinney started playing well w/5 minutes to go. Defense probably won it for us tonight tho.

Great team effort over all and a terrific win!!!!! Two more till we can relax. We took care of the ball real well tonite (6 TO), one of the big keys to winning on the road.

Great to see our Hornets pull away for a 13 point victory on senior night at a packed PSU gym. A big win over a great PSU team. May the team and the many Hornet fans in Portland tonight have a safe journey home.

Go Hornets!!!

Great effort and win for the Hornets! It was funny as the announcer was trying to do the post game wrap on BSTV a steady stream of Hornet fans passed behind him with shirts. banners etc. . He looked distracted! Time to focus on SUU and NAU and bring it home to the Well! Also a huge win by the Women vs PSU today!

Go Hornets!

Huge win. Didn't get to watch it, so I'll have to settle for the replay. I heard Tucker was hurt but wasn't sure if he would play or not. We definitely caught a break there. The Hornets need to stay focused and hungry and take care of business next week. Wow what an exciting time in Hornet hoops.

Watched the replay, great finish by the Hornets. A bit sloppy at times but the Hornet defense had PSU stifled when things got tight. All in all a good showing on the road with different players stepping up at different times, basically another typical Hornet game this season. 3-pt shooting was off but the Hornets went 20/22 from the stripe.

Here's to hoping they keep this going for a few more weeks.
