WAC/Big West

Why not join WAC for football only and Big West for all other sports?

The underlying theme here is that this may be the last chance to move into a FBS conference in a long time. If the school has any desire to be FBS someday, this could be it. Plus, there is no better time to negotiate than right now.

The problem would be jumping onto a sinking ship. Who would the Hornets schedule when the WAC folds? SJSU, Utah State, and Idaho and then who? The WAC is definitely desperate enough to give us an invite even though our facilities are terrible, but if they would be willing to throw a few million towards a new arena, why not?

i was reading on the South Alabama message board that their budget in 2013 when they join the Sunbelt will be $5M, which is the middle of the road for that conference. that's got to be at least DOUBLE Sac's current budget. Add the cost of women's schlorship's for Title IX, and you're talking several MILLION increase in athletic budget. How do you offset that cost? the BIG WAC TV budget? that's going away. bowl game revenues? most of the small conference bowl teams lose money when they go bowling, and the WAC will probably lose their bowl commitments. Higher attendance? for Texas State? San Antionio? donors? make no fiscal sense.

I can't see how any FCS team would/could make the jump to the WAC. especially in the current california economic state.

Totally agree. I think our best conference situation would be Big Sky/Big West.

completely agree with you on that, SJ. BigWest baseball is great. Basketball is a pretty competitive league, and the all-California lineup makes it great for the thursday-saturday DH. your SoCal alums can catch two games if they want, and the tourney is in Anaheim. Love to see Sac in the BigWest.

DrMike: Are you referring to South Alabama's FOOTBALL budget or their ENTIRE athletic budget?

Sac's overall budget is somewhere in the vicinity of $15M, I believe. HDD, Kadeezy, or SacRat would likely have more accurate numbers, but I believe it's somewhere around there.

the post says football; total athletic budget is $15M, $5.2M for football (35%). and, i misread....the $5.2M is THIS YEAR'S budget, not their projection for 2013. a unclassified team who played 4 FCS games, and they had a budget that is more than Davis and Sac combined. there's probably some startup money in there, but, still. they sure like their football down South!

Sunbelt football budgets range from $2.9M at Louisana-Monroe, to $6.6M at Middle Tennesee. average looks like about $5M. for the Sunbelt.....

i also found San Jose State's athletic department fiscal report. their total expenses in 2009 for football was $4.9M; revenues of $2.5M....deficit of $2.3M. Total budget $17M.
