WAC: Highlights from Commissioner Karl Benson

I can see at least one of them coming to the Big Sky if the Montana schools leave, but wouldn't the two Dakota schools come together given their geography?

One would think so. Some of the rumors suggest that UND and USD would both be extended invitations to join the BSC as football-only members, which is really better for everyone involved considering the travel costs associated for the majority of the conference having to travel to remote locations like Sioux City and Vermillion. I don't see either being admitted as all-sports members, and to be honest, it sounds like both schools are more concerned with finding homes for their football programs more than anything else anyway.

So Montana decides to stay with the Big Sky Conference.

President Royce Englestrom cited their desire to...
maintain the cross-state football rivalry with Montana State, he wanted UM to compete against institutions with similar academic missions and he wanted to maintain the prestige and integrity the program has demonstrated over the years.
Translation: We want to stay in the conference we have have been the top dog in since its inception and don't want to move to somewhere where we will be nothing more than the conference doormat and overall laughing stock.

Instead the WAC chooses to admit Texas State, UTSA and University of Denver, both of which have yet to play a football game of any sort.

Actually DU will be in the conference for all sports except football. The football side will only have Texas State and Texas-San Antonio.

OK, but UTSA is still a start-up program and the full support of San Antonio people and media who look at is as a viable alternativeto slow all the attention going to the Big 12 behemoth 90 miles up the road in Austin

Commissioner says WAC has new members lined up
Published: 08:22 p.m., Friday, January 14, 2011

"Multiple sources, one of which attended Friday's meeting, told the Express-News recently the list of football candidates includes, but is not necessarily limited to, Louisiana-Lafayette, Lamar, Sam Houston State, California-Davis, Portland State and Cal Poly."

Weird. Is PSU in a position to make a serious move or is this just another "it's nice to be considered" piece? If PSU is serious, then make a move. If PSU is not serious, why broach the subject? Unfortunately, it just makes the situation appear all that more unserious. We all rather need to be working on making what we do for a living not lame and wasteful. Be bold. Be positive in making the quantum leap up and forward.

Weird indeed.

Maybe, just maybe, there is something going on behind the scenes that they have been very very quiet about. That coupled with some of the recruiting coups Coach Burton has managed in the off season tells me that something might be in the works

I like the way you think. Spoken like a true Texan.

The WAC board keeps dropping PSU’s name as a possible WAC member; any validity to it? I know our admin at Sac State has considered the WAC but given the CA budget disaster I don’t see it happening unless some donor steps up and contributes about half a billion dollars to the Hornets cause. :|

I don't see it happening.

I could also be wrong...

If the higher ed reforms pass and we get our hands on the tuition we might be able to afford it. But would we want to?

There certainly are issues with money right about now. It's nice to think that we could potentially move up, but I rather doubt it. We just don't have the pot of money to spend on D1 status (on football, etc)/WAC membership right now.
