WAC

I think that PSU is not ready today to move up to the WAC. We need a basketball arena that holds at least 5k, and the attendance for football needs to increase. The big issue is money for the athletic department the facilities that PSU has are still the same size and level as back in our D2 days. I've herd that when the Rec center is completed that Stott could be turned completely over to the the AD. My biggest concern would that if PSU jumps up to fast that we would be the next Idaho. PSU is moving in the right direction, but it will take time and money to move up to D1.

What if we have the funds for a new BBall arena and this MLS stuff actually pulls through and the WAC loses BSU?

Wouldn't PSU need to fill more sports teams? We currently field 15, and the WAC has championships in 19. Plus, if you want to be competitive football, you need to fill as many scholarships as you can. The additional 22 scholarships that you can fill won't be cheap. While costs would go up, our revenue would as well with the higher draw programs coming in to Portland to play (giving your assumption of a new basketball and modified football venue). However, a significant bump in revenue for two sports wouldn't cut it to cover the costs. What PSU needs, is big time donors and corporate sponsors to grow at a much higher pace than it has in the past 1.5 years.

What Marty said. As to the issue of WAC expansion being the big announcement, there is no way for that kind of announcement to be kept secret. Conferences have to study potential additions and hold actual votes in order to expand. There is no way that all of that, especially the voting, would happen without the media getting word of it.

I am not going to push the Idea anymore that it should be. But It should be a major goal of the University and if we do get there It would be very big. The facts are what they are. But I think the new President may have underestimated his competition. And that Competition should be and is OSU and UO. Just think if we beat OSU next year and WSU is on the schedule this year. I used to get mad when we lost key players in games against pac-10 schools but the stakes are high in those games. Rolling over was never an option and the results showed that. Our schedule this year plays very well into the Viking hands. UC davis should be the focus for the team but as fans we have to look ahead.

Absolutely. A move up to D1-A/FBS should be an announced goal from the University. At that point, the milestones to hit that goal can be identified and published. Attendance, additional budget, support programs, etc. If PSU made public intentions like that, Viking Nation may be more inclined to support.

Heck, we want a new/augmented arena for hoops. If we had a plan out there saying it's going to cost X dollars, and you did a 'pass the hat' type deal at the Stott during games, I'd earmark an additional twenty dollar bill to help. Others would too. Certainly a 'pass the hat' scenario won't fund a multi-million dollar arena project, but those types of grassroots ideas would help if there was a future roadmap of the plan for athletics in place....

Like I said on O-dead...

15,000. Average. It's in stone, for all practical purposes.

Otherwise, only make it a quietly stated goal, made mostly for donors to hear. There is a habit among fans that I've noticed... once you say loudly that your stadium or your level of play isn't good enough, the casual fans tend to believe you and save up for the new park or higher level. It actually causes a short-term attendance drop.

You're better off getting prepared behind the scenes and then whacking people over the head with your intentions when you meet NCAA goals... and when the moratorium is lifted, obviously.
