Walking On

Just wondering if anybody knows the walk on policy for the Bears? Or any info pertaining to it. I am getting out of the Marines in 2 weeks and will be starting at UNC in January. I have been in contact with some of the assistants and know of a tryout date sometime in Feb. Was just wondering if anybody had anything to share, like how many walk ons UNC takes, etc. I know with Coach Downing not coming back, it could change, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Your best bet is probably to wait until there's a new head coach and get in touch with him. The current assistants may or may not be around after we hire a new head man.

That's what I figured. I'll be in Greeley December 4th. Then headed home for Christmas for a weeks and back in town before New Years. I just hope there are some football type drills in it. Until then, ill drill the 40, pro shuttle, 3 cone, vert and broad jump.

Thanks

Well welcome home and thank you for your service. Good luck.

Thanks guys

Unfortunately not an O lineman

More of a Safety type maybe an undersized OLB

5'11" 202ish maybe I can bulk up to 290 and give it a shot, haha

From the little I got to see UNC play on the net, looked the D was a 43 and the coverages were a lot of Quarters and maybe some Cov 2, but its hard to tell from the angle the camera was at.

According to the NCAA, you have to be invited to walk on. That's why schools have preferred walk on positions. The best bet may be to contact the school and ask to speak with the recruiting coordinator. They will then have you send some game film or possibly letters of reference from a previous coach.

Good Luck! Thank you for your service!

There's a thing called a Prospective SA under football on UNC's website, if you already haven't seen it. If you have a highlight video or something, send it in, also try and get in contact with the football department or athletic department. They should be able to fill you in on all the walk on info. I know if guys walk on its usually during spring ball. Best of Luck.

Been through this with other guys. You may have done all or some of this, but start with completing the Prospective Student Athete Recruiting Form for the Bears
http://uncbears.com/sports/fball/recruitForm

You must be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net
Here's a quick list of the things you need to get registered:
http://web5.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/pdf/registrationChecklist.pdf

You can download a guide for the student athlete at this link:
2010-2011 Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete
http://www.ncaapublications.com/p-3...college-bound-student-athlete-pack-of-25.aspx
The info on how to get cleared by NCAA and get a clearinghouse number is in there.
start here: http://eligibilitycenter.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.html
Then click on info for students on first page.
You'll get a graphic with a bunch of stuff, but LOOK FOR THE BLACK CALCULATOR.
Some artist thought it was cute to bury the info you need in a Nokia Calculator.
Click it and they will email you more instructions.

The athletic department is very limited in how much contact they can have with a prospective student-athlete until you have been cleared by the NCAA, so make that a priority.

You must be enrolled at UNC before you can walkon or play.

You will also have to certify that you are an amateur (also with NCAA.)

Many of these ncaa forms and hoops are things that high school counselors assist with, so if you have contact with yours from high school, see if that person might help (although the next few months are busy ones for high school counselors trying to get their current seniors into colleges.) But you can slog through yourself if you are persistent.

Last note: even though there may be a certain time when student-athletes are invited to walkon and tryout with the team, Coaches are usually willing to listen to talented players and see what they can do at other times during the season.

It's to be expected that walk-ons, talented or not, will start by serving time on the practice squad or scout team -- the players who act like the opposing team for practice the week before each game. You will have to earn the coaches' respect and earn playing time, but it happens every year that walk-ons make their mark. But EVERY college team needs additional bodies.

My advice I would NOT wait until there is a head coach in place. Get your material in to NCAA, get registered, keep up with contact with the coaches (not annoying, but regular contact by email, letting them know when you'll arrive, etc.) and best of luck to you.

Thanks for the info, I have actually done pretty much all of that, but I do appreciate the post. I will be arriving in Greeley in December, and once school starts in Jan, I will be camping out at the coaches office to try and get a sitdown with them.

I have exchanged a few emails with some of the assistant coaches. My situation is a bit different then the average walkon since I am 24. I actually stopped playing football in 10th grade to concentrate on baseball, was a better baseball player but just didnt share the love for it though. Then I joined the Marines and got my passion back to play. Got to play some in the Marines and have been training to try and walkon now for a few years. Now that time is pretty much here.

Thanks again.

It worked for Mike Anderson. Good luck to you (and if you do happen to make the team, ignore all our reactionary ranting on this board).

ahmard hall too.

Lol, if I make the team, I might just put this board on the shelf until after I graduate.

Also, the note about the scout team, etc. Exactly, scout team, special teams, whatever. I just want to get out and play and help the team in anyway possible.

If there is 1 thing I learned in the Marines, it's the ability to shovel more shit than the average man can comprehend.

Going for my Bachelors in the Sports and Exercise Physical Education, K-12 Teaching Emphasis. Want to get involved with coaching. Maybe someday GA or something.

well ive been in Greeley for 2 days now and have been running, etc. How long does it generally take to adjust to the altitude?

According to this, around 5 days initially then maybe 6 weeks to be 100%:

http://www.exercisephysiologymd.com/altitude/how-long-does-it-typically-take-to-adjust-to-altitude/

I remember doing a 5k run (I think it was 5k) before school started my Freshman year, I think it was part of a group of activities the 1st week of school. I was in good shape (played ice hockey) but I thought my lungs were going to burst because I wasn't used to the altitude. It was a horrible feeling.

yeah its pretty rough, lol. Born in raised in Florida and then spent the last 4 years in Yuma, AZ minus 7 months in Afghanistan, so it's a total shock to my system.

Thanks for the info.

Thats great Barry!! So what side of the ball are you going out for??? I assume Defense!! So whats he like for a first impression?? I know, dumb questions!! wish you luck and hope to see you on the field in the fall with a winning attitude!!

Looking at a Safety spot but will play whatever, an undersized OLB spot could be a possibility too. Seems like a good guy, explained what the process will likely be but that's up to Coach Collins who I should meet Wednesday

This is really cool and I/we appreciate the updates. Kind of an inside look at how this process works.
