Walter Payton Award . . .What will it take?

Ok so I go back and forth on if VA should still be in the hunt for the award considering he was out for 4 games. Part of me says that because he was out for that long he shouldn't be considered, but another part of me looks at it and says no one really ran away with it while he was out. He was the clear favorite for it before he went out.
So what type of numbers do you think he would have to put up in the final game of the regular season to get it or do you think he shouldn't be considered?

Also if you think he should still be in the running how many TD's do you put up against PSU to help his cause 6 or 7?

If we make it to the finals, I guarantee Vernon will be the winner. He will be freshest on the minds of the committee.

Also, if he has dominant games throughout, he has a very good chance of winning. Vernon is a very popular player in the FCS world. If Vernon just plays well, he probably will not have a good chance. I finally got a chance to watch a recorded version of the Montana game. I thought Vernon looked a little sluggish and less elusive during that game. Or was that just me? Maybe his leg/foot are still a little stiff from the injury?

My money is on him still winning the award. Next year, he will be an all out favorite, especially if he doesn't win this year. He definitely deserves the award one way or another, and I am sure the committee will see it in his hands.

I thought playoff stats were not considered for the award. I thought it was purely regular season stats.

Playoff stats don't factor in at all. The decision of who wins the award is decided after the last regular season game. At this point, Robinson from Villanova will probably walk away with the award, which is unfortunate because he is not a better player than VA.

I hope ISU ' S Arius is considered, and unfortunately I don't think VA can win while missing 25% of a season. Arius is putting up awesome stats in his senior year. If we can't win it, we should be voting for another big sky team.

I know that's true for the NCAA stat compilation. I don't know if that also invalidates all of his yearly accomplishments in regards to the Payton. If so, that's just dumb. That being said, I think the Payton award is largely stats based, and there will be players with better stats. VA will get a bump from name recognition, and could end up being in the top three (once again, if his stats at least count for award considerations), but I don't think he will win.

If he stays healthy next year, and continues to put up strong numbers, he will win hands down!

He's missed 33% of the season (4/12), unless you're saying that we play 16 games which means we play in the NC, in which case I like how you think. ;)

Like Seattle Eagle, I think Robertson from Nova would edge out VA right now as he has slightly better numbers, and still has two games left. VA will probably have to put up 7 TDs, no turnovers and like 500+ yards AND Robertson would have to have 3 turnovers over those two games for VA to win it. Hope I'm wrong or that happens though.
