Wanless leaving?

"We'll try and talk to as many elements of the situation we feel can help us make a thoughtful and proactive decision," Wanless said late last week before heading to Eastern Illinois to interview for the athletic director's job there.

Eastern Illinois?!

Sounds like he is looking for anything as certainly E. Illinois isn't a step up. Working for the State of California has got to be a horrible job being an AD and having fluctuating, constantly cut budgets.

If he leaves, I don't blame him. Seems like we are always taking a step back at Sac when it comes to getting on a roll.

He wants to be closer to his grandchildren who live back east. In a way with that, I don't blame him...for all his actions, he has certainly raised the profile of the entire department....more teams have been winning conference championships...and he has helped get at least baseball, softball and now football better facilities. Of course the big wild card is the gym and arena issue. Even short term renovations to add capacity to the Nest will help out in the long run...especially for volleyball and gymnastics.

Its not a step up? Hmmmm....I submit the following from their website at: http://www.eiupanthers.com/news/football/2007/12/18/07fbfinalrankings.asp?path=football

CHARLESTON, Ill. – With the NCAA FCS football season completed less than a week ago, Eastern Illinois has landed in the final FCS polls after making its 12th NCAA FCS playoff appearance. The Panthers ended the season at 8-4 overall, 7-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference where they were runners-up to Eastern Kentucky. EIU lost its first round playoff game 30-11 at No. 4 national seed Southern Illinois. It was the third straight playoff appearance for EIU and sixth in the last eight years. The 12 overall playoff appearances ranks 9th among current NCAA FCS members.

Eastern Illinois was ranked No. 15 in the final FCS Coaches poll while garnering a No. 18 ranking in the final Sports Network poll. EIU was also ranked 16th in the final SME Broadcasters poll and 15th in the final AnyGivenSaturday.com fan poll.

I'd say that is a pretty good step up from a football perspective. They've won six national championships in various sports, including one in football. Sounds like a pretty good gig to me.

Two possible replacements, both of which I would love:

1. Debby Colberg
2. The Big Cat

I'd LOVE to get him back, but Colberg would be a great choice as well.

Debby is retired and done. Forget about that, plus she already had it. No offense, but John is not coming back here as AD. He is a perfect fit in the JC ranks as an AD there.

Eastern Illinois has produced an NFL Pro Bowl Quarterback (Tony Romo) and many many top notch ball’ coaches (Mike Shanahan, Brad Childress, and Scott Linehan-- all currently NFL Head Coaches)...3 straight playoff appearances and a coaching legend in Bob Spoo as the current head coach…Truthfully, EIU would be better off without Wanless…

That's right. EIU produced the QB who ought to be out of town in Big D. What I wouldn't give to see the Cowboys replace Romo with my favorite qb Danny White....

Interesting question that popped in my head right now, though: What happens with Jenkins if Wanless bolts for EIU? Does Wanless can Jenkins before announcing his own departure? Does the admin axe Jenkins anyway? Or does Jenkins get yet another pass because they'll be too busy looking for a new AD?

Bingo! You win prize behind door 3 of the athletic administration building.
