Washington State Post Game Reflection

This thread is to talk about the nuts and bolts of our new team and what we noticed about individual players, statistics, and schemes.

First of all, that was a very exciting victory. I don't know if I have celebrated that hard since we beat Oregon State ;) . I was one of the doubters, and Eastern Washington sure put some sense in my brain and proved that we are a team that still reloads rather than rebuilds.

Biggest surprise for me tonight was the offensive line performance. Their pass protection was phenomenal against a WSU defensive line that was supposed to be pretty good. With how young this team is, just imagine how much development we have left. In a couple of years, we are going to have the best offensive line in the FCS. However, they are unproven in run blocking, which we will discuss that in a bit.

Next big surprise was the defensive back play. They were physical and fast. This isn't something I have seen since 2011. In a normal scenario, FBS players out athlete their opponents and tend to just overwhelm with subsitutes and physical play. This wasn't near the case in last night's game. Did anyone else notice all of the WSU wide receivers limping around? Slow to get up? Hunched over catching their breath? I didn't notice one player on our defense acting the same way. Our guys have been working very hard in the off season in the weight room and they looked and played TOUGH.

Our defensive line play was on par. Sure, there were moments when we didn't have any pressure. This mostly happened when we only had three down lineman rushing and the rest of the team in coverage. As soon as we brought more guys for pressure, the WSU line would fall apart and we swallowed them up. Do you remember in 2012-2014 when we would say "if only we had a decent defense, our overall team would dominate the playoffs". Well, our defense appears to have arrived. And our offense is almost at that level. This is going to be an exciting year.

Finally, GAGE GUBRUD. Mobile, agile, and hostile. Enough said.

There are a few things that I saw in last nights game that concerned me.

Special teams: We gave up a lot of return yards. It seems our kicker just doesn't have the leg to get the ball into the endzone, and it will create opportunities for our other teams. It just seems we haven't had that solid deep kick since Kevin Miller.

Penalties: It was the first season, so they get a write off. And we all saw that some of those calls were complete bogus. But there was a lot of penalties that should never have happened and put us in bad situations. If WSU hadn't been equally undisciplined, we would have lost the game. It is a concern, because we always seemed to rack up more penalties than the other team last year as well.

Rushing Game: Okay, so when you look at our rushing stats, it doesn't look so bad. But the more you delve into them, the more it looks a little dire. Our team accumulated 110 yards with a 4.4 average per rush. NOT BAD. Then we notice that 77 of those yards came from Gage Gubrud. Hmm, that seems risky to put your quarterback through that punishment. THEN you notice that 36 yards came from wide receivers taking the ball in a sweep motion play. So how many yards did our runningbacks put on the ground? 1 yard. Jabari Wilson put up 1 yard on 4 rushes and that is it. Is this due to our young offensive line? Or was it just a part of the game plan? We won't know for sure until we play some more competition, but it's really a concerning stat to say the least.

All and all, this looks like a great team with a lot of young talent.

I would like to mention that Shaq Hill looked in full form again. One of the best games I've seen him play in a long time.

My grading out of the game:
QB-A+ Don't think we've seen that kind of performance since 2013 Oregon St. or MSU games.
RB-C+ They weren't incredibly productive running the ball, but had some great receptions.
WR-B+ There were a few dropped balls. Overall very solid performances from Kupp, Hill, and Bourne.
TE-C Not incredibly productive in this game.
OL-A Considering the circumstances, they get a solid A from me. I think they only got to Gubrud once.
ST-C, Our kickoff coverage needs work as does just getting it deeper. Punting was ok from what I saw?

DL-B They get a solid B from me for holding their own and getting 3 sacks.
LB-C+ I think Calhoun and Kacmarcik (sp?) are going to be really good LB's for Eastern.
DB-C+ They gave up a lot of yards, but held their own in a few situations that prevented WSU first downs.

Overall team performance: A

In regards to the rushing game, I think you have to consider the game plan. We knew we would have to throw the ball a ton to have a chance. But even so, we went with designed zone-read plays several times and the DE continued to bite, giving Gubrud those rushing yards. That's one dimension of the offense that simply did not exist last season.

Like you mentioned, the Line has a lot of room for growth so once they get those zone blocking schemes down pat you are going to see a lot of productivity on the ground with the RB's.

Interesting point on the officiating. It was bad. Not a Missoula-type bad where you just get screwed, but more of a WTF bad, where both teams got hit with bizarre calls.

Both chop block calls were a complete mystery. In the end, the two bad calls neutralized themselves as each team got dinged. But both were terrible calls.

I thought the offensive PI call on Kupp was very much a WTF moment.

Takeaways:

Great intensity and focus throughout the game; huge improvement in all facets
Gabrud showed great poise and patience, overcame a late error with the pick in the endzone and made the throw to Kupp and run for daylight that sealed the deal.
OL was better than expected.
Antoine Custer got his first touches in big time moment and scored early TD. Pure excitement to watch the celebration!
Shaq and Bourne were GREAT compliments to Kupp and Gabrud with several meaningful catches making it hard to key solely on Kupp.
DL was beastly with great effort and making plays against the run and pressuring the QB
Havili was AWESOME with a middle LB mentality and tenacious pursuit
Reverted to soft play after early slant to Marks went the distance in the defensive backfield, teams will take what we give them
Great tackling throughout game
Looking for a leap in performance in the next game and the BAR is set high!
AWESOME TEAM WIN!!!

Addendum: Mitch Fettig played lights out and the DB's had good coverage against some very talented WR's. Nothing but upside for this Defensive unit.

Ditto on all that has been said plus,
we need to clean up penalties. Penalties cost us the UNI game last year. If we have another 12 flags for 118 yards against the Bison I think we lose.
More balance, We outgained WSU but total yards of 110 will not cut it.

A few things I would highlight:

- Defensive line looks big. Pass rush will come with reps and teams with less than a 323 lb average on the oline.
- Speed in the secondary and overall physicality of the defense looks leaps and bounds above last year.
- Some new scheme elements in the offense. Interesting to see the sprint out protection. Might be to help the young oline- moving the LOS is a big help in pass pro.

That being said, one game is an incredibly small sample size. The Eags have an incredible test coming up with a long road trip and a quality opponent. Hope to see some maturity and great preparation this week.

Go Eags.

To All,
Heard that Marks supposedly made remarks that he even didn't know where Cheney, EWU was Located. I will now bet he knows exactly where Cheney is located, who Cooper Kupp is, etc. Marks was being punished each time he was hit by our Players. I have always said "DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS TEAM"'. I was very much impressed with the entire performance of all, we had a few laps in between. Love the way the team came out in the beginning of the 2nd half and played. The game was a "Sell Out". We went out to welcome the team and coaches back to Cheney, never had an opportunity to. We left Cheney about 12:10 a.m., Cheer Leaders stated the was just coming out of the Locker Room, they had just gotten back. Found out today the Team got back about 12:30 a.m. They were there getting ready for watching the Film. "Great Game" Vic Wallace

It was great seeing Shaq back out on the field, and he had a great game. The big reception where he got drilled in the helmet but still hung on to the ball comes to mind. We really missed him last year.

Anyone know of any injuries? One of the Players stated today, he think #35 Alek Kacmarcik might be injured, but wasn't sure. He was the Player late in the 4th qtr, that was down on the Field. This young man is a hell of a Player, hope for the best for him and the rest of our Team. BTW don't forget Coaches Meeting tomorrow at Quest "IMPULSE" at 5:30p.m. We will be there. Hope to see a big crowd at that function. Vic Wallace

It looked like a concussion to Kacmarcik. After the hit, he went into what looked like the fencing reflex. I bet he is out for a couple weeks.

It's a small sample size, but from what I saw it was either a part of the game plan or the offensive line play. When the runningbacks were a receiving target, they ran hard and punished anyone who dared tackle them. We will definitely gave to see after some games. The thing is, NDSU isn't going to let us have an impressive rushing stay line.

It seemed like the D swarmed to the ball and tackled way better than the past few years. Dopa especially has to be pleased with that.

Indeed. What I was most pleased with was that we seemed to improve defensively over the course of the game. We kept trying things until something worked. And holding WSU to 42- especially with a garbage time TD- is pretty solid.

Keep in mind WSU was playing their backup Free Safety in the 1st half and then down to their 3rd string after the targeting penalty.

Expect a much lower scoring game Saturday in Fargo.

Off Line better than I expected
Def, especially LBs and DBs much faster than last year
RB has more speed with Custer.
Gubrud seemed to read the D pretty well after the snap. Didn't see too many throws into double coverage. West seemed to struggle with this last year. Teams seem to be able to confuse him.
Oh, and that #10 guy is pretty good.

I don't know if that is a reasonable excuse when they have roughly 20 more scholarships than EWU does. Besides, if their guys are beating up people at Dominos and getting ejected for targeting the head, maybe their problem is they need to recruit smarter players.
