We need a new Causeway trophy

The Causeway 'trophy' is pretty sad for such a storied rivalry. It's a piece of concrete. Concrete!
The Causeway Carriage was once the annual trophy, but apparently was a pain to move.

I am thinking of starting a kick starter to fund a new trophy that has a carriage on top, with an expandable base that shows the winners since the start.

Do you think it's a good idea, and how much would it take to make?

Wow, surprising to hear nobody interested. Perhaps because I don't post regularly?
Anyone agree our trophy is pretty sad?

I don't think the problem is what it looks like, it is an actual part of the Causeway that the game is named after. It just needs to spend more time on the east side of the Causeway !

agree that it is a piece of lame concrete from the freeway but it does seem to represent the name sake of the Causeway versus the carriage. The carriage was a huge pain to cart around...remember even pulling the old buggy in a parade many years ago. Thinking that it does not matter what the trophy is or looks like, just want it to stay at Sac State for many and most years.

Would love , however, to see some type of trophy for the Cal Poly game. Davis and Poly have the Golden Horse shoe rivalry game but we do not have a trophy or even a name for the Poly/Sac game between the two California state university schools. Surprised that the marketing departments at Sac State and Cal Poly have not gotten interested in developing a rivalry between the two schools. Such a natural rivalry to develop. And Poly is the only other school in the Big Sky that Sac State fans seemingly have any interest in. Big Sky schools outside of California have no relevance to Sac State fans. And the Big Sky schools we have in state are Davis and Poly and only in football.

I know the carriage is a pain to lug around, but what if the trophy was a small replica carriage? Heck, mount it on concrete if people are so interested in a piece of freeway...

There is actually an official name for the CalPoly/SacState game. It's called the "Green and Gold Game". If you notice, every time Cal Poly plays SAC, they will always wear their all gold uniforms (I don't know why they did not do it this year). :coffee:

Should be the Spanos Bowl since Alex Spanos donated to both stadiums.

I would have a trophy both sides can agree upon. There were two trophies made for the Golden Horseshoe game between UC Davis and Cal Poly - one by each school. One or the other keeps getting stolen or not recognized by the other school. May be fun for some frat but it's kind of lame.

Agreed, if the trophy represents anything of value the winning athletic department should be responsible for keeping it secure.
Allowing the student body have access to modify, replace it etc. is moronic. If it means nothing why even have it? I thought the old carriage was cool but, it had to be a logistical nightmare to take to games not to mention keep secure during the year.

Cal Poly most certainly got the better deal from Spanos A new look stadium with major upgrades to the super structure of the stadium. Sac State got a couple new entrances and a rod iron fence around the stadium from what I can surmise.

The Green and Gold Game was indeed in place of the name of the game in the past and seems like a logical name to officially bring back again.. And wins between the two schools is very close all time. A simple large plaque might be good enough . Names of the winner engraved on a gold surface mounted on a green color plaque. If it needs to be more fancy, perhaps the plaque could be in the shape of the state of California to represent the only two FCS football playing state universities in California.

Davis and Cal Poly have done a great job at making their game a traditional rivalry and seems like it would take minimal effort on the part of both schools to bring more energy and hype to the annual game between Poly and Sac. Then both schools would enjoy two rivalry games each year in the Big Sky. Same thing is being done between Weber State and Southern Utah so Weber has another rivalry game besides the match up each year with Idaho State.

The Weber State / Southern Utah Rivalry is kind secondary to their traditional Idaho State game which goes way back. Similar situation with us and Poly, which will never get as much attention as the Causeway because of the history also because we share the same media market.

CP isn't the only school with Spanos funding. UOP has the Spanos Center and the Faye Spanos Concert Hall. UCSD has a locker room he funded and built, too. There may be others.

But after the way he and his son threw two future HoF quarterbacks to the wind for that punk Phillip Rivers, I say find $$ somewhere else....

I actually find myself wanting to beat Cal Poly more than Sac State. Judging by the attendance at the Causeway Classic, I think a lot of other people are feeling that way too. I think something needs to be done to re-invigorate the rivalry.

I think that had more to do with you guys only having 1 D1 win heading into the game. Over 12k made it to Hornet Stadium for last year’s game and neither team came into that one looking stellar.

Of course if your brilliant ticket department were only offering grass seats (aka dungpiler coed grazing area seats) after the Hornet allotment was sold out then it’s no surprise there was a weak turnout for the game. You guys should have capitalized on Hornet fans wanting to see the first winning season in 14 years…I guess your AD doesn’t need the money.
