Weber State at Nevada

When was the last time Weber had an exciting offense? Was it clear back with Dave Arslanian?

Pretty good two years ago, before Schram showed up. Also helped having an QB. Before that, the Higgins/Smith years.

Those were good running teams but they were pretty run dominated weren't they? Or, am I forgetting a more balanced attack?

Awesome, Jenks out!

Higgins threw a lot

Offense is like a race car with a lawnmower engine and a grandma driving the car.

Nevada defense isn’t a juggernaut. This offense isn’t going to win an FCS championship. Montana State made a move mid season last year canning their coordinator. Weber State should not be afraid to do the same unless they want to put it all on the shoulders of the D and special teams like last year.

Well, time to revamp the offense. Schram, he needs to be replaced. The problem I see, is we are trying to run an offense based on plays, but we don’t have the skills to make the plays work. We need to run the offense based on the players we have.

Jenks was 6/21. That should all but cement the end of his QB career. He’s throws everything side-armed. He sucked last season, and continues to suck. Is Constantine really our best QB? I haven’t seen any type of trick plays, or anything to hold defenses accountable. It will be a long year if we can’t figure out offensive play calls. Too predictable and basic.

Defense and Special Teams were the only bright spots. Although Shaheed might need to be replaced on punts. He’s made several bad decisions within the 10 yard line.

Basically, we don’t have an offense that can win us makes when it’s close or matters. Offense isn’t exciting or fun to watch. It’s run, run, side arm pass.

I miss the offense of the Arslanian days. They could light up the scoreboard with any team, they just didn’t have the defense to keep the strong teams from scoring as they were usually outmanned in that side of the ball.

What I find frustrating is I think Weber State has good talent on offense (weak at QB spot) but coaching and play calling ruins it on Offense. I think Hill is one of the beat defensive coaches out there. Watching how he game planned Western Illinois and how the D basically won the Big Sky is awesome...just makes watching the play calls on Offense that much worse.

Even though the Cats only lost by 6, that was not a fun game to watch. The defense gave up yardage in the second half because it was totally gassed. But, it never broke and held Nevada to field goals. The offense?!? Ugh...just not the greatest. Last week Weber looked great but was bad yesterday. A decent defense totally exposes how our offense. Have to score to win.

Another frustrating loss against an FBS team.

Offense - F
Nevada had 10 TFL which only included one sack. QB play was not good though the only interception was not Jenks' fault. Only positive was the lone touchdown catch. The line was not capable of opening up the running game. The offense was a feeble 1 of 12 on 3rd down conversions and averaged an anemic 2.8 yards per play. Play calling was miserable again. No misdirection. No adjustments. No creativity. I might miss the Matt Hammer offense.

Defense - A minus
D-line was absolutely dominant. Secondary played too much soft coverage, especially against passes over the middle. Much of this was likely by design to not give up the big play. We won the turnover game due to two INTs forced by pressure on the QB. Unfortunately the defense was unable to score points for the offense. If the secondary can become a little tighter in coverage, this could be a very good defense.

Special Teams - A minus
Two very good special teams plays, one poor decision and a solid kicking game. The blocked punt set up the only touchdown of the game. The fake punt was a surprise following two straight penalties. Unfortunately the offense failed to capitalize. Shaheed made a poor decision on a punt return which pinned the offense deep and ultimately led to another field goal by Nevada.

Injuries
Constantine was out. Downs was still out. McGinnis returned from injuries. Jenks took a late hit and sat out for a couple of plays.

Penalties
3 penalties for 15 yds. Two of them on the same fourth down punting attempt. Much improved.

Weber gets a BYE to lick their wounds and prepare for a very tough home game against Northern Iowa. Hopefully the Cats find some offense soon.

What I think we are missing on offense and I hate to say it is one thing I hated Cantwell doing only because we had a good back field at the time and he was a risk is a mobile quarterback. This is college football where at least 80-90% of all qb make plays off the run. The majority of the big sky qbs average over 50 plus yards when needed. I think it just gives the offense so much more options and also leaves the defense confused at times. Cantwell did a hell of a job in the pocket but when there was nothing there he made the play when it was needed the most.

Couple of thoughts about why our offense was less than stellar in Reno.

1. Nevada was coming off of a total butt-kicking. Nevada is not a bad team and its defense was probably challenged all week to excel. This was a huge game for them and they responded like it was. They came out and played great. Nevada might have lost to Oregon but they did beat Purdue.

2. Weber was starting Jenks. Definitely a capable QB, but not Constantine. I thought Jenks came in a played great against Cal Poly. But, Nevada is a definitely beast altogether. Having a different guy under center definitely changes the dynamic of the team.

3. I'm starting to think that our OL isn't the healthiest. A number of guys seem banged up or out. If the OL isn't playing at a high level then everything falls apart. Our offense depends soooo much on establishing the run. Once the run wasn't working then we'd try to pass our way out of busted plays and Nevada knew exactly what we were doing. In other words the script did not work and, regrettably, it wasn't adjusted. I'm pretty sure Coach Hill wasn't happy about that. Yet, offensively, we did not play anywhere near as good as the week before. Coach knew we should have been able to move the ball and we didn't, hence his comments. But, if the OL is struggling, then everything is going to struggle. Gotta get the OL healthy.

I wasn't happy that we were playing BYE so early, but this year, it is really fortunate that BYE is coming to town this Saturday. We desperately needed this time off for our team to get healthy.

That's just your opinion regarding the health of the OL, right? I haven't seen or heard anything that really backs that thought up. I've questioned how good the OL is all along but I think it can be made to look better or worse depending on the quality of the OC and game plan. I certainly don't believe the OL is bad, but I also don't believe they're good enough vs the the higher-level competition they face to begin this season. I have my doubts their struggles have been related to health and I still wish their BYE wasn't so early. I believe they have their hands full vs UNI, BYE or not.

I am aware of two injuries on the O-line. Tyler Downs has not really played all year. Cole McGinnis started against Nevada. Nobody else projected on the two deep has had a reported injury.

O-line has looked pretty good in one game and were very challenged by better quality defenses in the other two games.

The problem has been the failure of the coaching staff to make adjustments based on the opponents defense. We seem to have one scheme with very few wrinkles and rarely deviate from that. When we can't run, we also can't pass.

Good reporting from Brett Hein here. He included some interesting quotes from Coach Hill:

“We’ve got to do a better job, coaching wise, of scheming better,” he said. “We’ve got to get players in the right positions to be successful ... We have to do a better job of distributing the ball to our playmakers and executing down the stretch.”

“The weird thing is, I can turn on film on some offenses and you can’t tell a flippin’ thing they’re trying to do. They don’t block guys right, they don’t execute things very well and they get yards,” Hill said. “We’re on the flip side of that. I can see execution, I can see technique, we’re just not quite getting the ball to the right person at the right time, or something’s going on in each play that’s costing us the effectiveness that we need to have. We just need to clean up little things like that.”

From these quotes I get the sense that Hill isn't very happy with the play calling either. I think we better see some big improvements from Schramm the rest of the season or a change might be on the way.

Bad scheme and poor QB play.

Amen to that. This was no mystery though. Last year the defense won 4-5 games pretty much on their own but cold not save the offense from itself at NAU and vs Maine. Without a dominant defense, it could have been a 6-6 year.

A new offense could have been installed this year. Is Schramm going to put an offense together that will take Weber State to FCS Championship Level? In my opinion, not even close. It’s a simple and lame scheme that is easy to defend, and Schramm will not make adjustments to how the defense is playing or where the talent is. Why Constantine faked a keeper last year at all was ridiculous. A shotgun formation on 3rd and 1? There is no misdirection, screens, or play action. It’s just lame.

If UNI shuts them down, they need to get Schramm out and get an interim for the rest of the year. Montana State canned their OC last season and was able to rally and make playoffs.
